Hello! Welcome to Wikivoyage. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Project:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub.

We'd love to have more info on London! I look forward to it! --(WT-en) Majnoona 18:24, 19 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Area codes

edit

Hi Caroline. First welcome to Wikivoyage and please do plunge forward. It is good to have somebody with a local London perspective on board. I see you come from Wikipedia; from my limited experience there I think Wikivoyage is a significantly friendlier and less dogmatic place (but that might be prejudice).

The reason I'm writing though is because you added area codes to listing entries on the London/Greenwich article. In fact there has been some discussion on this (see Project:Manual of style) and I was going to tell you that as a result the MoS said:

  • Phone numbers should leave off the area code unless outside the "main" area code of the city.

However in researching this I discovered that whilst it did indeed say that for restaurant, bar and hotel listings it did not say it for attraction listings. I think this is an oversight and have amended the MoS, but that change may not stick.

Personally I prefer the no-area-code approach because it is shorter, and avoids lots of complexities with international codes etc. However it does rely on a decent entry in Contact to indicate how to dial long distance and/or internationally. I note Greenwich is missing that, so I'll add it. -- (WT-en) Chris j wood 08:43, 20 Jul 2004 (EDT)

Difference between cc-by-sa and GFDL

edit

Hi Caroline, I'm looking to upload some photos to Wikimedia Commons I took while I was in Iraq and I'm trying to decide which licence to use. On Cooperating with Wikipedia you say that cc-by-sa is superior to GFDL. Can you elaborate? —(WT-en) Christiaan
