MediaWiki talk:Edittools

Would anyone be opposed to adding something similar to Wikipedia's Wikipedia:MediaWiki:Edittools? I kind of get tired switching between English, German, and Polish keyboards when the need arises, because it can be quite difficult to revert back to the English keyboard. I think it would benefit other users too.

Actually, I have no idea how to fix these problems. When I introduce this to the MediaWiki namespace the tildes show up as my signature and several of the templates actually display rather than just the text giving you the option to load them. isIn --> isPartOf

My understanding is that isPartOf is preferred over isIn. There has been some (albeit not much) discussion about updating isIn to work like isPartOf, but in lieu of that I think it make sense to make the preferred template the one to appear in the edit toolbar. Unclosed tags

As an aside, this template is missing a closing </div> tag, a closing </small> tag, and a closing </span> tag for the "characters" section. Because "元" is not English: we don't use 円 for Japanese yen or บาท　for Thai baht either. ¥ is instantly comprehensible as long as you know that the local currency is the Yuan, whereas 元 isn't and many browsers won't even show it right. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:28, 14 June 2007 (EDT)

Is there any reason to not offer both in the Currency section of your EditTools button section? There are a set of nowiki tags hidden after a set of noinclude tags on the Wiki markup: line. I have fixed on shared:, but I can't do here because no sysop status. So please someone make them nested like this :

Special characters?

Upload form

Found what? Anyway, it seems like we could use the parser tools and a magic word to display it different depending on the namespace. MediaWiki:Newarticletext already does this; it displays different text depending on whether the page is being created in mainspace or Talk or User or User talk. If none of those, it displays nothing. tollfree

The edit tools currently provide the blank listing format as * <listing name="" alt="" directions="" address="" phone="" email="" fax="" url="" hours="" price=""></listing> - this is missing the tollfree="" lat="" long="" fields for all versions (see, do, pillage, burn...) of the tag. Status templates

Almost all of our articles already have a status template, especially if the article outline was initially constructed using any of our common methods. When a status changes, I suspect most people simply change the template name rather than deleting it and inserting a new one. Given all this, is it necessary to have the article status templates occupying an entire line (near the top, no less) of the edittools? LtPowers (talk) 14:15, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Currency symbols that don't display properly

I've added two currency symbols that were just recently given Unicode/HTML codes and currently don't display properly to me (up-to-date versions of Windows 7/Firefox 18) and probably most other users. They are the w:Armenian dram sign...֏...and the w:Turkish lira sign...₺. Short of excluding the symbols altogether, there are two ways to handle these symbols:

1. Keep the symbols in the edittools on the assumption that most browsers and operating systems will soon be updated and properly display the symbols. This way, the symbols can be added in the proper locations on WV pages without the need to be tweaked in the future.
2. Create templates. This is how the symbol is handled on WP...w:Template:Turkish lira (clicking on the symbol leads to w:Turkish lira...the template would need to be fixed to only display image) & w:Template:Armenian dram. Insert these currency symbols in the edittools template as their respective image (create blue version of their svg file: lira dram), but when a user clicks on one, it is added into the edit box as the template (ie. {{lira}} or {{dram}}). This may be the optimal solution and could be replaced with a bot a few years in the future, when the symbol displays correctly on most devices.

Thoughts? On a related note, I've organized the currency symbols based on their appearance to the Latin alphabet, followed by Cyrillic symbols, then other symbols. This is somewhat based on w:Template:Currency signs and will make it easier to locate the right symbol rather than having to look through the 28 symbols for the right one. It would be really helpful to have code added so that a box with the symbol's name appears when your mouse hovers over it (eg. hover mouse over ₹ and a small box with "Rupee" appears). This would be tricky with the dollar sign, used for currencies with several names, but it's probably famous enough to be called just "Dollar" (especially for English-speakers. I support both the template additions and the suggestion that the template is updated so that the English names of the symbol are displayed as mouse pointer hover text (except for the $ symbol which is too well known to need it and is used by many different currencies). -- Alice^✉ 04:49, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

For the dram and lira, I could potentially support the use of a template. Another alternative could be to keep the status quo, and take another look at this in 6 months and see if anything has changed. For the Indian rupee, the new symbol has been in use for a few years now, and most browsers and OSes should have adopted it. What browser/OS are you using that doesn't display ₹? The most backwards compatibility we'd want to bother with is Windows XP and probably Internet Explorer 7+. JamesA ^>talk 06:04, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

It should only be necessary to install truetype fonts, not an entire browser or OS, to get additional characters. Win NT2000 onward support Unicode, as does Linux. Then again, € didn't exist when Win98 was released and had to be patched in later. K7L (talk) 15:08, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Windows XP with Firefox 19.0. Anything that requires the installation of additional software or new fonts of any kind is user-unfriendly. If we are not concerned about supporting legacy platforms, we also should stop being concerned about legacy internet connections, like the slow dialups from far-flung internet centers that get mentioned so often when we discuss the importance of excluding large files from our guides. And I would disagree with that, because serving the traveler should extend to both legacy platforms (within reason) and limitations on the availability of fast (or even any) internet around the world. Now that we have decided to prefix currency amounts with the three letter ISO 4217 code for the currency in block capitals and no intervening space (except for the countries specifically excepted I think it would be better if

1) these notations were removed from the picklist so that it's not too easy to add them back in again to prices contrary to our simplified policy: ₵ ₡ ₫ ƒ ₲ ₭ ₦ ৳ ₸ ₮ ₺ zł лв РСД ֏ ៛ ₴

The symbols that are specifically excepted should, of course, be retained: ¢ € Kč £ ₱ $ ₩ ¥ ₪ ₹

2) these commonly used non-currency notations are added:

m² m³ ° ☎

(I know they can be found after clicking "Special Characters" and then "Symbols" - but then so can the symbol for Korean won ₩ and other currency symbols - the degree and square symbols are used more frequently in articles)

Sidebar templates section should be removed

Use of [[Wikipedia: ]] and [[Commons: ]] is deprecated. This functionality is now handled by Wikidata and these links will stop working once the RelatedSites extension is turned off (which will probably be soon). See discussion at Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#We need to remove all the RelatedSites links. The {{related}} template is no longer a Sidebar template (these links are now displayed at the bottom of the page) and it isn't used frequently enough to put it in Edittools, IMO. "Talk pages only"

I think the "Talk pages only" text has been odd. Why include the tildes on non-talk pages in the first place? Consistency is of course good, but I don't think not finding it when editing articles will confuse anybody.

There is the problem that not all discussions are in the talk namespaces (think Travellers' pub), but I think signatures are not needed in article, template or mediawiki namespaces – and those needing signatures in those namespaces should be able to type the tildes or to copy them from elsewhere. You'd still get the slightly annoying text when editing guidelines or expedition pages – or perhaps we could do without the comment in those contexts.

I make a try now. For simplicity, I remove the line from main namespace edits only, and remove the comment from the article talk namespace, leaving the tildes. I don't remember how you get "or" in an elegant way, which would allow adding more namespaces without making the code convoluted.
