Request for update

edit

I want the message to be more modern. Change this message to:
This page is currently protected so that only administrators can edit it.
* Some templates and site interface pages are permanently protected due to visibility. Occasionally, articles are temporarily protected because of editing disputes. Most articles can be edited by anyone. * The reason for protection can be found in the [[Special:Log/protect|protection log]]. If there are no relevant entries in the protection log, the page may have been moved after being protected. '''There are some things you can do''': * Discuss this page with others. * Request the page's protection level to be reduced.
The result:

This page is currently protected so that only administrators can edit it.
 • Some templates and site interface pages are permanently protected due to visibility. Occasionally, articles are temporarily protected because of editing disputes. Most articles can be edited by anyone.
 • The reason for protection can be found in the protection log. If there are no relevant entries in the protection log, the page may have been moved after being protected.

There are some things you can do:

 • Discuss this page with others.
 • Request the page's protection level to be reduced.

That does seem like an improvement. Can we directly link the page's protection log rather than the unfiltered log? Powers (talk) 02:54, 29 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

VFD nomination

edit

Bit of a strange one. Not sure what it is, but the only Wiki contribution by User:2602:306:379D:1AA0:38F4:FAF2:A792:86BC. I have left a message on their talk page.

I think fairly safe to delete, but not vandalism as such so at least give a chance to respond. (it may be someone from a sister project trying something out) Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:00, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

I've speedily undone the above VFD changes since adding a {{vfd}} to this MediaWiki message page causes every protected page on the site to show the VFD notice. See mw:Manual:Interface/Protectedpagetext for further details. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:21, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
I was unaware of the MediaWiki guidance, so duly noted. However is it also correct that this page should not have been created under Wikivoyage? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:29, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
No local copy of the page existed on Wikivoyage until it was created with the content {{vfd}}, at which time that local version overrode the default Mediawiki version. -- Ryan • (talk) • 02:38, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
The only users who can create or modify anything in MediaWiki: space are administrators. That's pretty much hard-coded into the software. (The talk page, OTOH, may be edited by anyone.) Are you saying that anon-IP's are changing the MediaWiki: interface? K7L (talk) 03:44, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
No, it was my (100%) mistake. The user changed the talk page for that and somehow I thought they had changed the main page instead (and applied a VFD). --Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:37, 22 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Outcome: Speedy keep -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:57, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Editing protectedpages text

edit
Swept in from the pub

Hi, I recommend editing MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext. This message is displayed to every user that tries to edit a protected page (no matter the level), and is currently vey uninformative. wikibooks:MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext or wikinews:MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext are examples. Leaderboard (talk) 11:25, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

I tried editing my userpage (pp protected from Ljupco), but where does it link to that page (MW:PPT) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:33, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: You will most likely not hit into this restriction as you're a template editor. Try editing your userpage as an IP. Leaderboard (talk) 11:34, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Nope, still not coming up. Also, can someone look at abuse filter 23, as it did not allow me to comment with my IP address (possibly an IP range used by Brendan John Williams, but I have no idea about what it is.) I'll post a screenshot of what's coming up. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:42, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Leaderboard:, I've also tried to edit it on desktop, and no link. 1.129.110.133 11:57, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Can you share a screenshot? Works here on desktop. It won't link to MW:PP, but will display the contents directly. Leaderboard (talk) 12:23, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Leaderboard: - Done here's a desktop version. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 12:37, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: That's right. The message you're seeing is exactly what's in MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext, that is, "This page has been protected to prevent editing or other actions.". I'm saying that the message could be modified like what we've done in Wikibooks. Leaderboard (talk) 12:43, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'll start drafting one in User:SHB2000/Protectedpagetext. To all editors, feel free to edit it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 12:50, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
It shouldn't be that large. Hint: try editing the main page of Wikibooks. Leaderboard (talk) 19:26, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Protectedpagetext" page.
