Talk:Altrincham

Not to deride Altrincham, I have added to the 'buy' section some background on how it has deteriorated. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Ilikescider (talkcontribs)

As a resident of Altrincham I think the comments in the "Buy" section are fair; although it does conflict with the "Do" section which says, "The local shops are good." The statement in the introductory paragraph "The town has rather subsumed neighbouring Hale" is rather misleading. Altrincham includes the boroughs of Hale, Timperley, Broadheath, Bowdon and Hale Barnes - all these areas are part of one large town and unless you are in the know would be hard pressed to spot the boundaries. —The preceding comment was added by 213.152.245.226 (talkcontribs)

The 'Eat' and 'Drink' sections seem to have become rather mixed up, some in the 'Eat' section (e.g. Market Tavern & Cheshire Midland) I would not describe as places to eat, they are mainly drinking places and as such should be moved to the 'Drink' section. —The preceding comment was added by Altfish (talkcontribs)

I have never been to Altrincham, but I would say that those of you who live there or are otherwise familiar with the town should please plunge forward and edit the content as you see fit — for example, by moving primarily drinking places to the 'Drink' section. Thanks for being here and for your edits! Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:54, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, still learning the protocol Altfish (talk) 12:08, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

What is the 'Connect' section for?Altfish (talk) 13:17, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Generally, Wi-Fi hotspots, local mobile phone SIM cards and outlets, Internet cafés, area codes, etc. You might have a look at Wikivoyage:Article templates/Sections and Wikivoyage:Where you can stick it for more info on what goes where. Texugo (talk) 13:37, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a glitch with the Captcha function when adding listings. If I get it right first time it is fine. However, if I misread it (and I often do!) it gets into a never ending request for another Captcha and you have to leave the site and return. Altfish (talk) 21:50, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... that is odd! If it's easier, you can edit the article manually, although the listings templates do look a bit funny in that view. --Nick talk 22:28, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Altfish (talk) 05:32, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The 'Eat' section seems to have vanished and been replaced by a duplicate of the 'Drink' section !! Altfish (talk) 05:32, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Here's the edit that did that. Fortunately, it's easy to just click "edit" on the version with the "Eat" section, select the text from that section and click Alt-C, then go into the current version and insert it where the first "Drink" section is. I'll do that now and it should work like a charm. If it doesn't, please fix anything I unintentionally mess up. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:19, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Doh! It's a learning curve!! Altfish (talk) 08:42, 3 October 2013 (UTC) Has the 'add listing' finction been removed? Altfish (talk) 08:44, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm seeing it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:50, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Strange, I can't see it and I've just checked again? BTW, I love the new banner Altfish (talk) 10:28, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Indeed it's a very nice banner. I am still seeing "add listing" buttons at the beginning of every section starting with "See." I really have no idea what's causing the problem at your end. I hope someone with more technical savvy than I will be able to help you later, if the problem persists until then. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:39, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The "Add Listing" button is still not visible; also the 'edit' button at the end of each listing has vanished. I should add I am currently on my work PC which may have different 'protection' than my home computer; both work on the same Windows and Office systems though. Altfish (talk) 12:01, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I can't be sure, but is Javascript blocked on your work PC? I think that's unlikely though because you would have noticed other glitches like a messed-up table of contents. Also what browser are you using. Probably Internet Explorer? -- torty3 (talk) 12:26, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Don't think Javascript is blocked, as you say other issues would be present and I can still see the 'Edit' buttons after the headings, but not the 'add listing' button Yes, I'm on IE at both home and work Altfish (talk) 12:44, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's something to do with the inserted iFrame for the map, particularly for IE8 and below. I've removed it for now, but will fix the issue soon. Thanks for reporting it. -- torty3 (talk) 15:29, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

That certainly seems to be the case, since it's gone I can see the 'edit', 'add listing' buttons Altfish (talk) 07:47, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry if I'm getting in your way (especially for the odd fault with the listing editor), carry on with your good work! -- torty3 (talk) 11:46, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

W Frank - I'm not agreeing with your removal of the capitals in the Frank Sidebottom Statue entry. It was meant to be 'shouting' as this is an event which will very soon happen and I was intending to change the entry once the statue is erected on 20th October 2013 Altfish (talk) 21:38, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Just call me Frank - it's my Rufname. I understood that and it was not me that changed the capitalisation. Keep warm! --W. Frankemailtalk 22:17, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Malt & Apple: I've been told that this has closed. I've driven passed it a couple of times and it has been in darkness. I have marked it as 'MAY BE CLOSED' and will try and get up there this weekend to confirm. If it is closed I will remove. Altfish (talk) 13:25, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the update! --Nick talk 13:59, 5 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it's closed - although it seems to being re-fitted for something else. Anyway, I've removed it 86.13.247.132 20:41, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Altfish (talk) 13:06, 9 November 2015 (UTC) Games Workshop has reopened as Warhammer about 100m away from the original site; I have added it to the listings.Reply

Map

edit

In my opinion, all this article needs for Guide status is a map. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:19, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I agree, Altfish has done a splendid job! Is the dynamic map sufficient or do we need a static map as well? --Nick talk 23:32, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like the dynamic map. This is a Guide now. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:17, 9 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Additional tasks

edit

Some more well-chosen photos would be great, as there is room for about three more. Would Altrincham be a good place to feature as Off the Beaten Path? How interesting is it to visit as a day trip from Manchester? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:11, 2 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I can source some photos, I could do with an idiots guide to putting them on the page though - is there such a thing? Altfish (talk) 16:27, 3 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Altfish! We do have a guide to adding photos here, which will hopefully help you out. If you do have some photos of your won, it'd be great to see them on here; you just have to upload them to Commons first and confirm that they are freely licensed. If you have any problems with it, just let me know and I'll do my best to help out! --Nick talk 16:49, 3 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, yes I'll have a rummage through my photos, not likely to happen for a couple of days due to other committments but it will happen! Altfish (talk) 16:55, 3 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's great to hear! :) --Nick talk 17:06, 3 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
