Erm...

Angeles is mainly famous as a city full of prostitutes. Yet this is mentioned nowhere in this article. Why? People should at least be warned. (WT-en) Sachabrunel 09:27, 21 May 2008 (EDT)

Plunge forward! We've had problems like this before with enthusiastic Filipinos whitewashing their cities, see eg. Talk:Cagayan de Oro. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:32, 21 May 2008 (EDT)
(Un)fortunately have never been there. Will add a note though. (WT-en) Sachabrunel 01:46, 28 May 2008 (EDT)
I changed the opening paragraph so that the city has an "vibrant adult nightlife" rather than "notorious nightlife" (which is a meaningless phrase -- what does "notorious" mean?!). I hope this denotes the fact that the city is indeed filled with prostitutes. I agree this should be stressed more heavily since whitewashing an article is not doing a service to tourists. Not mentioning prostitutes in Angeles is not like mentioning casinos when writing about Las Vegas. --(WT-en) UCLARodent 21:12, 10 June 2009 (EDT)

Note for editors

edit

Please try to be balanced here. The Lonely Planet pretty much warns against going to the city. If you search for angeles philippines on google you'll see that of the first ten results three are related to the sex trade, with another two related to "go go bars". Now maybe you live there, maybe this is an incorrect impression, but you should at least address it. (WT-en) Sachabrunel 04:44, 3 June 2008 (EDT)

I was born and raised in this city and you need not rely only on the GOOGLE search. It's ridiculous because people would believe whatever they see or hear. Why not go to the city and see it for yourself what this city can offer. The prostitution thing is exaggerrated and it's only situated in one strip called "Fields Avenue" near the former U.S. Clark Air Base and that's about 1% of the city's land area! Don't put anything defamatory here unless you know yourself how it is living in this place. Thank you!
First, Wikivoyage does not exist to "promote" the city. The traveller comes first.
Second, "defamation" is for people, not places — and truth is an absolute defense. Since you're telling us that we should not believe Google, can you tell me what part of (eg.) this page is factually incorrect?
Third, this same edit war has been raging on Wikipedia:Angeles City for, um, forever. You're not going to win there, and you're not going to win here. (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:42, 7 June 2008 (EDT)

Yes and that's a website... but have you really been in this city? I bet not, cause what you hear is all what you want to believe. It's like generalizing and branding the city as such, when you have no proof to claim as such. There really is prostitution in this city, much like Manila, Quezon City, Cebu and any other Philippine city, name it! So why add this disparaging statement when ORIGINALLY it wasn't there at all? What's your motive? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Diophosphate8 (talkcontribs)

I have reverted your edit. You need to achieve Project:Consensus before making a controversial change. I have no opinion on this matter other than you must first find consensus and second edit the page. -- (WT-en) Colin 19:16, 7 June 2008 (EDT)

Las Vegas entry was not called "Sin City" in its introduction. Phuket was never mentioned to be a prostitution city. San Francisco was never branded as "Gay Capital of the World." So why call Angeles as such?
Las Vegas isn't as fun as that, Phuket is best known for its beaches, most SF visitors are not there for the Gay Scene, and you are arguing with the wrong person. Get consensus or have your edits fail. -- (WT-en) Colin 23:26, 7 June 2008 (EDT)
I think prostitution "capital" is a little overblown, and I've reworded the article a bit. But Las Vegas definitely should be called Sin City, and I've added that to its intro. (WT-en) Jpatokal 02:23, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
Thanks guys, just put the phrase there as a placeholder until someone put something better. Article's looking much more balanced now even with a couple of little changes. (WT-en) Sachabrunel 11:01, 9 June 2008 (EDT)

Is this an acceptable intro, per wikivoyage guideline?

edit

I don't understand but this certain peterfitzgerald locked this so no one could edit it when in fact he was the one who kept on putting back an intro stating "notoriously notorious nightlife" and all you could read is NOTORIOUS in both intro and understanding sections. Ain't that ironic? Check the history tab and you get what I mean.

Angeles has made itself known as the "Sisig Capital of the Philippines" and it was once called "Las Vegas of the Philippines" for the high concentration of casinos so I think the previous phrases deserve to be there because we are supposed to promote the city, other than the nightlife scene. (WT-en) Diphosphate8 23:08, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

I neither know anything nor care about this city. I protected this page because you were edit warring against the existing consensus higher up on this page. Please address your concerns there. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 23:54, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

So you never care nor know anything about Angeles? How come you like to put back that "NOTORIOUSLY NOTORIUS nightlife" line up there? Seems you like having fun doing it. And scroll up to see what one moderator said - put a phrase there until it gets into something better... and that's what I was basically trying to do. Thanks! (WT-en) Diphosphate8 21:13, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Look, the The traveller comes first. Since Angeles is a place noteworthy for the prevalence of prostitutes, we need to tell the traveler about it -- and clear consensus to do so has been established. We already have a lede which mentions the historic value of Angeles along with some hint of the problem. You have no consensus for eliminating, burying, obscuring, or hiding this information. Work on the places to go and things to do in Angeles and stop worrying about this one piece of information we have decided to convey. -- (WT-en) Colin 22:36, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
Why don't you talk it out here... come up with a rewrite that you think covers the diversity of Angeles, but that also mentions it's nightlife and prostitution history and problems (which as much as we'd sometimes like to write cheery articles about what we'd hope that a place will become, we can't sweep glaring realities under the rug). Once you've done that others can comment and we'll come to an agreement before putting it into the article – (WT-en) cacahuate talk 23:40, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

I did NOT eliminate or hide any information about that nightlife scene in the intro. What I did was that I added some noteworthy info about it being known for its popular dish and why it was called the Sisig Capital of the Philippines and known for having high concentration of casinos. I just wonder why such one person deleted it and changed it to "being known as NOTORIOUSLY notorious nightlife" instead that the word "notorious" became so redundant. I know what I added may not be something that is acceptable to him nor does it suit his taste, but do you think he has every reason to mess this article up? Any opinions? (WT-en) Diphosphate8 20:45, 8 September 2008 (EDT)

Based on your user contributions it seems that your goal with this article is to remove any information that is in any way negative about this city. As many others have pointed out, Wikivoyage is meant for travelers, and that means telling them about the good AND bad of places, yet you have repeatedly reverted other edits and even deleted language meant to find a better balance between positive and negative. Based on your past edits and seeming unwillingness to come to a compromise I don't see much more that the community can do to work with you. For my part I thank your for contributing and hope you find other projects that interest you, but I don't see any point in further discussions about your contributions to this article. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 21:20, 8 September 2008 (EDT)

LMAO, well I'm Filipino, most of my fellowmen (mostly ones who are not open-minded) are like that they don't accept the negative or positive fact(s) of a certain place, thing or person (one example is Ferdinand Marcos, all they think about him is bad :P). In the case of Angeles I must say a person has a right to know what it is known for, it is unfortunately the major red-light district/destination in the Philippines and everyone has a right to know about it ;P. BTW why is it listed as a guide article? it doesn't have maps or pictures. I will try to organize the article, it's kind of messy but I won't remove the adult nightlife infos LMAO. - User:(WT-en) SnappyHip 17:28, 9 March 2010 (GST)

Well done SnappyHip. It's not a guide and I have put it down to usable. All the listings need better ogranisation.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:32, 9 March 2010 (EST)

Including nearby Mabalacat

edit

The article is somehow a bit outdated, but I am inclined to cover nearby Mabalacat within this page, which seems agreeable than creating a separate article, basing on the arguments made for towns near Dumaguete and my work I done for the towns near Lipa. --TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 03:37, 2 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
