"Bernese Lowlands" is wrong

edit

The name "Bernese Lowlands" is virtually unknown in Switzerland. This entry might come from a misunderstanding - there is a "Berner Oberland", that is Bernese Highlands, but no corresponding "Berner Unterland" (Bernese Lowlands) in actual Swiss usage (apart from some stray appearances). The sentence "The central, flatter part of the canton of Berne is marketed as the Swiss Mittelland by the Swiss tourism office" is also wrong in several ways - Swiss Mittelland is not a marketing term, but the usual Swiss term for the Swiss Plateau, Schweizer Mittelland in German (see Wikipedia article), which comprises areas in several cantons (such as Solothurn, Aargau, Lucerne), not just in the canton of Berne. There's more that's wrong in this entry... the canton of Solothurn is not "surrounded by canton Berne", but shares borders with the cantons of Berne, Basel-Country, Lucerne, Aargau and Jura, and even with France. Given this, I'm going to move this entry to Swiss Plateau and change the content accordingly. Gestumblindi (talk) 02:57, 21 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I agree, the term 'Bernese Lowlands' or 'Berner Unterland' is virtually unknown whereas 'Swiss Plateau' or 'Schweizer Mittelland' is indeed a known term. However I see some issues with this, as it is referred to as one of the region in the main Switzerland#Regions. The cities you added are also in the regions Basel and Aargau and Zurich, so I think adding them to this article will lead to confusion and unnecessary duplication. I would suggest leaving the category as it was before and maybe naming it into something which corresponds better to the limited region. Maybe 'Bern and Solothurn' or something like that? --Drat70 (talk) 02:12, 26 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Drat70: Maybe we can / should re-organize the Wikivoyage regions of Switzerland - I started a more general discussion at Talk:Switzerland#Regions of Switzerland and would appreciate your input there :-) Gestumblindi (talk) 00:42, 28 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Bernese Lowlands

edit
Swept in from the pub

There has been a rename of one of the regions of Switzerland. Its range has also been extended as far as cities listed. Could someone with knowledge of the area and the reasoning behind the regions please provide some input. --Traveler100 (talk) 10:19, 21 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

~ I added a comment on the talk page. While it is true that the name is not a common name, I think this edit goes to far. As the page is a subcategory from the Switzerland#Regions page, there are now some cities which are included in more than one category, which is IMO rather confusing. I suggest reverting the edit for the cities added and rename it either to the original name or find a more suiting name for the region in question. --Drat70 (talk) 02:16, 26 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

"Region Berne" reads like a non-English-language name. Should we call this article "Berne Region" instead? Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:32, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is probably due to the fact that the name was coined by me and another (presumably) German speaker (Talk:Switzerland#Regions_of_Switzerland), so if you say it sounds wrong, then we should definitely change it. Drat70 (talk) 09:55, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I agree that "Region Berne" does not sound like an English name—when I saw it, I assumed that it was the name in a local language and that it was using a French or German word "Region" rather than the English word. The article's lead seems to call the area "Swiss Mittelland". Should that be the title of the article? If not, "Berne Region" sounds better to me than "Region Berne". —Granger (talk · contribs) 12:39, 7 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Swiss Mittelland was another suggested name, which was found not fitting (as it covers a much bigger area). You can see the discussion above and on the talk page I linked above. Anyway, since Region Berne seems to be wrong, I will go ahead and change the article to Berne Region in the next couple days if nobody has objections against that.
