Should all California state parks be included in this page? There are a lot here, but I don't think the list is complete. WhatamIdoing (talk) 03:43, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@WhatamIdoing See New South Wales national parks for example. It's got at least 225. But think it's still manageable. IMO, this is nowhere near "long". SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:56, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Nevertheless, this is a pretty long list. WhatamIdoing, how many more do you think there are? Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:59, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
280 in total. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 04:03, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think we should subdivide the listings into Northern and Southern California, with this article becoming an overview. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
A split might eventually become desirable, but it might be easier to make sure that they're all in the list if we keep it on one page for now.
@SHB2000, are you willing to add the rest of the names to the various sections? And do you want to align the sections with California#Regions? (I've no objection to the current division; I'm only wondering whether you'd prefer to have somewhat smaller regions – whatever you prefer is okay with me.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:20, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't know to be fair. I'm more familiar with the ones in southern California, but not the northern California parks. If anything, I'd use whichever ones @SelfieCity: or you would prefer. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 00:22, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sure. I'm sorry that I completely forgot I was working on this. It proved to be an overwhelming task. I would divide into the regions. It's hard to define the exact split between north and south in California, so I'd divide into regions as sort-of proposed above. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 01:09, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
We could also just change the color of the markers as well, similar to my very long redlink farm. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 01:39, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
If someone can add the ~195 missing park names, I am willing to add all the Wikidata items and coordinates. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:50, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
It would be nice if Wikipedia just had a long list sorted out into regions like what I did in New South Wales national parks, but w:en:List of California state parks doesn't seem to sort things out by region. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:07, 26 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I found a (sort of) list by (their) regions at https://www.parks.ca.gov/ParkIndex. I don't think it exactly matches our regions. Here's what it says for Central Coast, that we don't already have in our list:
  • Asilomar State Beach.
  • Cambria State Marine Park.
  • Carmel River State Beach.
  • Carpinteria State Beach.
  • Cayucos State Beach.
  • Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park.
  • El Capitán State Beach.
  • El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park.
  • Emma Wood State Beach.
  • Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument.
  • Henry W. Coe State Park.
  • Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area.
  • John Little State Natural Reserve.
  • La Purísima Mission State Historic Park.
  • Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve.
  • Mandalay State Beach.
  • Marina State Beach.
  • McGrath State Beach.
  • Monterey State Historic Park.
  • Monterey State Beach.
  • Morro Bay State Park.
  • Morro Strand State Beach.
  • Moss Landing State Beach.
  • Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.
  • Pacheco State Park.
  • Pismo State Beach.
  • Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
  • Point Lobos Ranch Park Property.
  • Point Mugu State Park.
  • Point Sal State Beach.
  • Point Sur State Historic Park.
  • Refugio State Beach.
  • Salinas River State Beach.
  • San Buenaventura State Beach.
  • San Juan Bautista State Historic Park.
  • Zmudowski State Beach.
The thing is, our list has a couple that they don't put in this region, so I think it might be more effective (but more work) to copy the names out of their "by county" list. WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:40, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Some of them don't seem to be state parks (such as Refugio State Beach or Salinas River State Beach), but rather state beaches. Individual beaches don't get their own articles per wv:wiaa. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:45, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Some of the beaches are pretty spectacular and a few might merit their own articles. Most California beaches aren't really for swimming. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:14, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Definitely, under the park article status. (and I'm saying this having lived 1 km from a very white beach before) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 09:17, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Are we trying to limit this list to state parks that could be separate articles? WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:05, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Regions

edit

At a glance, the section called Central Valley seems to cover the regions that the California article calls Sacramento Valley and San Joaquin Valley and perhaps Gold Country. What it calls Southern California probably includes Southern California and Desert (California).

The main state article doesn't divide easily between Northern and Southern, but it might be possible to align with those regions and have Northern, Central, and Southern. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:03, 26 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Okay. What area is Central, though? The Bay and Sacramento areas think of themselves as the North even though they’re about halfway between Baja and Oregon. --Comment by Selfie City (talk) (contributions) 12:54, 26 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
In that tripartite arrangement, I'd put the Bay Area in "North", mostly because it make sense to have Marin and Napa Valley in the same third. WhatamIdoing (talk) 06:32, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
