Part of national park?

edit

Just curious, is this town really part of Songshan National Park ? Typically parks do not serve as regions in WV? Andrewssi2 (talk) 13:23, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is. I think there might be another town/prefecture ambiguity here, with a mountain & a national park thrown in to complicate it. The most famous thing in the area is the Shaolin monastery. w:Dengfeng says that is in Dengfeng but w:Shaolin Monastery has "on Mount Song, near Dengfeng".
Dengfeng is on both UNESCO World Heritage List and Wikivoyage:World cities, so I'd say it definitely needs an article.
I suppose the park article might be merged & redirected here, since most of its accommodation listings are in Dengfeng and 'Get around' has city busses, but I don't like the idea, Pashley (talk) 14:09, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Do you have an idea about the structure? Just that it seems a little odd to have a complete park article with a town underneath it. Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:17, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
No. And it is worse than that.
The best-known tourist attraction is Shaolin Temple; our article is currently a redirect to the park but the temple passes the "can you sleep there?" test, at least for long-term students, and might rate its own article.
WP has a redirect for the park pointing to w:Mount Song which says it is "in the Dengfeng district" but "The seven peaks of Song Shan stretch for 64km between the cities of Luoyang and Zhengzhou."
UNESCO citation at [1] is for "Historic Monuments of Dengfeng..." but text has "At the foot of this 1500 metre high mountain, close to the city of Dengfeng in Henan province and spread over a 40 square-kilometre circle, stand eight clusters of buildings and sites ..."
It is going to take someone who knows the area fairly well to sort this out. Pashley (talk) 10:21, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree that a 600,000 person city should not be merged with a park article. Would it be really bad for both articles to be neighboring peers on the hierarchy? Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:37, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
As far as I can tell, the park is part of the city, not the other way around. The evidence is on the Zhengzhou government's official website, It states quite clearly that the Songshan Park Management Committee is a body of the Dengfeng City Government. If so, the information about the park should be merged and redirected to the city article, though it can be separated into subsections of each basic section of the template as useful. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:07, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Merge tag?

edit

This is now tagged for a merge into the park article. I very much oppose the idea of a merge.

This is a city of over 600,000, on the UNESCO World Heritage List and with one site, the Shaolin Monastery, that is world famous. Pashley (talk) 10:35, 14 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

The merge tag was inserted by User:Traveler100, so it would be good to get their input. I was hoping to resolve this without a formal merge process. Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:21, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
It looks like the merge should go the other way. Ikan Kekek (talk) 01:08, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I would certainly be in favour of such a merger. STW932 (talk) 14:46, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I put a merge tag on the Songshan National Park article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:20, 21 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I think it's important to note here that Songshan National Park is not one single area as some people might imagine. It actually consists of several separate 'scenic areas' spread out over a wide geographical area. Moreover, some of those scenic areas (the Zhongyue Temple and the Songyang Academy for instance) are less than 5 km from the city center, so this is not simply a case of the park being within the city's administrative boundaries. STW932 (talk) 12:51, 21 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Are there some parts of the park that are exclaves within the boundaries of other cities? Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:22, 28 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
No, the park lies wholly within the city of Dengfeng. STW932 (talk) 10:32, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, so no problem, the merge should be done. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:38, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Assuming nobody has any objections, I will probably complete the merger sometime next week. STW932 (talk) 10:58, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
