The Dieppe commercial

edit

This phone commercial got a lot of reaction in Canada. Powerful stuff. I'll let others judge whether it should have link on the actual page, but it seemed worth adding here. Pashley (talk) 12:21, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

A documentary. Pashley (talk) 17:35, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Interesting! Is there any precedence for linking a YouTube video under a Watch heading, do you know? For the doc, I mean, not the advert. --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 09:38, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
It would be a violation of this site's external links policies, as YouTube is specifically cited as a site not to link to. Ikan Kekek (talk)
So it would. Perhaps a mention without a link then? --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 10:06, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
I had a look at the commercial and the documentary. My reaction is that I would not like to mention the commercial at all. Not sure about the documentary, but couldn't we give a non-YouTube link for it? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:24, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
So there's this, which embeds the YouTube video. The Legion Magazine made and uploaded the video. To be honest, if the only reason not to link the doc is because it's on YouTube, that suggests the policy is flawed. Most videos on the internet are uploaded to YouTube, so it may be sensible to distinguish between types of videos, rather than where they are hosted. I agree about the ad.--ThunderingTyphoons! I'd be open to reconsidering that policy. Would you like to start a thread at Wikivoyage talk:External links? Link to this thread if you like. Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:28, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Flags?

edit

Current text at Dieppe#Understand includes the sentence:

You will rarely find a French flag flying in Dieppe without a Canadian flag alongside it.

That strikes me as likely overstated & I'd like to replace it with something like:

The town is quite welcoming for all tourists, but Canadian travellers may find the welcome particularly warm.

What do others think? Pashley (talk)

Having been to Dieppe, I think the statement is accurate. The French, like most Europeans, are not big flag-flyers; flags are normally reserved for public buildings and war memorials. But there are a lot of war memorials in Dieppe, and most of these commemorate Canadian sacrifices in one form or another, so there are a lot of Canadian flags about. All the Allied flags (and increasingly, the flags of the former Axis powers) get brought out for display on houses and shops across Normandy for the June D-Day commemorations, and I suspect Dieppe does the same, but with an emphasis on the red maple leaf over all others. --ThunderingTyphoons!
