Buses

edit

I recommend avoiding the buses in Gyeongju as much as possible, as buses back from Oreung, and to places like Samneung never seem to turn up, despite being listed at the bus stops. (Added by Anonymous user in 2008)

For the record, this was not my experience. The contributor above is possibly not able to read Korean which is why they had issue Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:19, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

German article

edit

There are not many German articles about Korea, however https://de.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Gyeongju looks like it is more detailed than the English version. I have marked it for translating some new content. Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:19, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Yesterday I worked a little bit on this article and thereby looked at the German article too and I think it has great potential. If it wouldn't be for the rather meager eat section, Gyeongju might someday become Destination of the Month or Off the Beaten Path. ϒpsilon (talk) 05:35, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I noticed and thanks for that! Gyeongju is actually relatively unknown outside of Korea and although not quite Angor Wat, it is definitely worth a day at least on anyone's itinerary in South Korea. Andrewssi2 (talk) 05:53, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Everything from de and fr is now brought over and translated. Will eventually look up the missing coordinates as well. As I said, it's just the ridiculously few Eats and Drinks that are preventing Gyeongju from becoming a Guide. ϒpsilon (talk) 18:21, 17 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
This is great! I agree about the restaurant listings.. I might try and get over there again later this year and research that again. I remember there are some great places offering primarily Korean side dishes, and the town is famous for its red bean cakes. Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:15, 18 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Geographic limit?

edit

After taking in some of the German listings, it becomes apparent that some sites that are totally associated with Gyeongju are actually a good distance away. (Just take a look at the dynamic map at zoom 9). I think we need to get all the listings brought over first, geo-coded and cleaned up, however I feel long term we may need to create another article for those sites closer to the coast? Andrewssi2 (talk) 11:07, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

There's currently something wrong with the dynamic map (as Ikan pointed out below) - it gives me the 403 Forbidden error. If there are just say, three or four of them we can put them into the Go next section. Otherwise we need to have one or several articles of the "Gyeongju countryside". In Suriname#Regions we (well, it was mostly WiDi and Julia who did the hard work) made "collection" articles of villages/small towns; basically region articles with heading for the towns and listings. Maybe something similar could be done with the sights scattered around Gyeongju?
Where should we draw the limit then? I would suggest the limits of the city's public bus network. If you would need a car, taxi, tour or intercity bus to go there, then that sight would be placed in the "Gyeongju countryside" article. ϒpsilon (talk) 11:50, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
If I were to make a suggestion at this point, it would probably be Gyeongju city limits + Bomunho lake nearby. However I'm willing to wait to get all the listing on here first before making a decision. Andrewssi2 (talk) 11:57, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm sure I saw that message at another article last week. Any idea what it means? I assumed it would be a temporary issue. Andrewssi2 (talk) 11:55, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
User:Mey2008 and User:Torty3 are our POI map experts. They can probably help.ϒpsilon (talk) 12:07, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I doubt it is specifically to do with this article. Other articles such as Tegernsee are also affected.
This is a good case in point on why relying on external service providers with no SLA may be a 'challenging' idea. I'm very much in favor these days of dynamic maps, however the static maps are definately easier to keep available at all times. Andrewssi2 (talk) 12:33, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I too noticed that all dynamic maps I've tried to open give that same error (also those without any listings) and that's really annoying. Dynamic maps is one more example of something that is fantastic... as long as it works. ϒpsilon (talk) 12:43, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
The entire wmflabs-server [1] is down. We can only wait. - Full-screen outputs (view full-screen, geo, article POIs) I could redirect to the old server. -- Joachim Mey2008 (talk) 13:10, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Galleries

edit

Andrewㅆㅣ, Wikivoyage:Image policy#Montages and galleries is not very happy about Gyeongju's layout. If we do expand the article with stuff from fr and de, we'd get more text and therefore more space for photos on the right side, however half of the pretty photos will still unfortunately have to go. ϒpsilon (talk) 19:41, 6 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

The image galleries and actual images are taken directly from DE Wikivoyage. I don't have a major issue in removing them. Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:07, 7 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
OK. I'll try to add the rest of the stuff from the other languages in the next couple of weeks and then remove photos that there's no place for. ϒpsilon (talk) 18:07, 7 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
I was going to post about the galleries, too. I wanted to add this photo, but there really are too many images in this article already. The thing is, I don't know the city, so I'd rather defer to someone else to choose which images are most important for a prospective visitor to see. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:07, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
That is a nice picture of a Silla crown from Gyeongju! However unfortunately it is not on display in Gyeongju but rather in the National Museum of Korea in Seoul's Yongsan district. I think it would make a good addition to that article? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 09:22, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
According to the documentation of that photo and also according to the main page of Commons, where this is the Picture of the Day, it is in the National Museum in Gyeongju, not the one in Seoul. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:26, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
OK, I didn't see that at the bottom. The image is hosted at this link which made no mention that it was hosted in the Gyeongju branch of the National Museum, hence my mistake. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 09:54, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
If you can read Korean, why are you only ko-1 in your user page's Babel? :-) Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:58, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Reading is MUCH easier than writing! I hope to upgrade to a ko-2 at some point ;) --Andrewssi2 (talk) 11:07, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

[unindent] I see the galleries are still there. I'd like someone who's familiar with the city to get rid of the galleries and use the most important photos as regular thumbnails, preferably along with the photo of the golden crown of Silla that I linked to above. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:26, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

And I still want to add that Featured image of that crown, but until the galleries are removed, I don't feel it's reasonable to do so. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:45, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Are the photo galleries still here? I'm going ahead with the removing of the galleries (moving some of the photos there isn't space for in See towards the end of the article and removing the rest).
Eat and Drink need more listings and Connect needs some content too, and the article needs geo coordinates and after that we could finally consider upgrading the article to guide and nominate it for DotM. ϒpsilon (talk) 17:28, 2 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Silla or Shilla?

edit

Gyeongju was the capital of the w:Silla (신라 ) kingdom. I thought it was romanized as 'Shilla', but Wikipedia seems to disagree.

Is it OK to change all instances of 'Shilla' in this article? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 05:06, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ping ϒpsilon --Andrewssi2 (talk) 05:06, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've always seen it spelled "Silla", for whatever that's worth. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:22, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
ㅅ is usually romanized as "s". ϒpsilon (talk) 05:44, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, not so easy. 신 in isolation is romanised as 'Shin', although the 라 afterwards modifies the preceding 'n' sound. :) --Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:12, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
...and 라 is "ra" by itself! Hmm, apparently "Si" as a freestanding syllable such does get an extra "h" in between, at least sometimes. ϒpsilon (talk) 06:35, 24 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Just to conclude this, I guess 'Shilla' was a pre-1980 romanization. Can I go through and update everything to 'Silla' ? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:22, 27 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
I just updated it, for consistency's sake. Again, 소녀시대 is sometimes romanized as So Nyeo Shi Dae, or shorter SoShi...
BTW, I was considering we could have some Korean article as DotM sometime after the summer rains are over next year. This article is, I think, the strongest candidate. Some Geo coordinates, 10 more eateries, some style fixes (the photo galleries etc.) would be needed. No rush, etc... ϒpsilon (talk) 16:46, 4 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Wow, this was never DOTM? (admittedly I don't pay much attention to that aspect of WV) I can spend some time on this. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:39, 4 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I don't like the galleries and would suggest that the best of the images need to be turned into regular-sized thumbnails (or bigger if necessary), with the rest removed from the article. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:54, 4 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Galleries to pictures?

edit

There has been some discussion about removing galleries Wikivoyage_talk:Image_policy#Tool_for_finding_and_removing_galleries

I'm just wondering what the best strategy is for this article if we did remove them? I feel that Gyeongju does benefit from having many small thumbnails showing the many different sites, and I'm thinking moving even half of the images to the left hand side would be a bit messy.

I believe the listing template does allow for an image to be associated although I'm somewhat unclear what that would look like.

An alternative is that we could............ (deep breathe) create a montage and test out the communities newly found consensus on at least evaluating creative potential uses :) --Andrewssi2 (talk) 22:15, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

The reason I don't like these (or most) galleries is that the images are too small in many cases for the reader to be able to see much. There's no important reason to try to have an exhaustive set of images of the city in a WV article - that's what the Commons link is for. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:37, 8 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and montages would have the same problem: Each picture would be too small in many instances. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:37, 8 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
edit

As with recent discussions, I'm not keen on replacing banners for the sake of change or a personal preference on aesthetics.

Current banner

However if we are going to propose Gyeongju for a DOTM , then I feel the existing banner of Anapji pond is just not quite doing justice to it. It looks like a generic Korean style traditional wooden building in a forest which can be found anywhere.

Potential banner, but definitely open to suggestion

I did a Flickr search and surprisingly I couldn't find many candidates. I created the banner of burial mounds to the right, although I feel it still isn't quite what we are looking for.

Can anyone else comment or make proposal of source images for this?

Thanks! --Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:41, 13 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Both banners are good, but I'm not convinced that a banner of mounds of dirt would be superior to a banner with a traditional building in it, just because mounds of dirt are atypical in Korea. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:06, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree it wasn't a significant improvement. I hope someone might provide a suggestion for a better one ^-^ --Andrewssi2 (talk) 07:57, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
Both banners are quite good, though I have a slight preference for the current one. ϒpsilon (talk) 11:11, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
The point I was trying to make was that I think we need something better for DOTM. I need a CC source image that would make a better banner. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 21:33, 14 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Something fishy in the climate table

edit

The amount of rain for the autumn months in the climate table does look interesting. The difference from what is mentioned on WP is huge. 1125 mm for October is probably a typo with one thousand too much but then there's also 543 mm for August and September with comparatively a lot less in between. ϒpsilon (talk) 13:16, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Well spotted! October is also a pleasant month without much rain at all so it is almost certainly a typo.
Another question is why should the values in Wikipedia and Wikivoyage be any different? --Andrewssi2 (talk) 19:42, 23 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've changed the table to one compiled with data from Wikipedia (originally from [2]). It does not rain like in Cherrapunji in Gyeongju. ϒpsilon (talk) 17:52, 4 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ready to release?

edit

Per my comment a while back I've been working on the article for a little while. What do you all say (especially Andrew), could we perhaps already upgrade the article to guide status and nominate it for DotM or is there something in the article that still needs work? --ϒpsilon (talk) 17:36, 11 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

No replies? I guess I'm going ahead and nominating it now, then. ϒpsilon (talk) 20:47, 16 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
