Disambiguation

edit

[Moved from Talk:India by (WT-en) Hypatia 01:54, 3 Apr 2005 (EST)]

Can someone who knows the subcontinent comment on whether Hyderabad (India) is so much more famous than Hyderabad (Pakistan) that it shouldn't be disambiguated? (Remember, it can't be just that it is more famous, it has to be lots more famous to almost all travelers, as in Paris vs Paris (Texas)). If none can explain that Hyderabad is incredibly famous relative to Hyderabad (Pakistan) I'll move it to Hyderabad (India) and make a disambiguation page. -- (WT-en) Hypatia 07:33, 11 Nov 2004 (EST)

  • Hyderabad, India is definitely more famous than its namesake in Pakistan, though certainly not to the degree of the two Paris' that you used as a relative comparison. In recent times, Hyderabad, India is mostly known for its IT industry, and is often referred to as the second Bangalore.
  • I'd say the India Hyderabad is famous enough... I didn't even know there was one in Pakistan, but you can't get to far in any book about Asia-- history or travel-- without knowing a lot about Hyderabad, India. I can't say it's as famous as Paris, cause, we'll I don't think there are a lot of people in the world who haven't heard of Paris, France, but I bet you could dig up a few who hadn't heard of either Hyderabad. Let me put it this way: if they've heard of a Hyderabad, they've heard of the on in India. (WT-en) Majnoona 10:31, 11 Nov 2004 (EST)

So, no real conclusion here: I'll leave it for anyone who feels passionate about Hyderabad (Pakistan). (WT-en) Hypatia 01:54, 3 Apr 2005 (EST)

Hyderabad is famous for its Charminar, Salarajung Museum, Golconda fort, Ramoji Film city, Biryani, Haleem, IT infra structure, Cosmopolitan culture, Film industry, Beautiful girls, etc etc

Hyderabad ( pakistan ) doesn't even come near to any comparision --(WT-en) Kpvishnu 23:37, 18 October 2006 (EDT)

Hyderabad (pakistan) is not famous at all, Hyderabad (India) is 6th Largest city of India, it is rated as Gamma + city, search it on google, almost all of the results would lead to Hyderabad, India. Chitransh Gaurav (talk) 08:01, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hyderabad ( India ) is famous

edit

Hyderabad is famous for its Charminar, Salarajung Museum, Golconda fort, Ramoji Film city, Biryani, Haleem, IT Infrastructure, Cosmopolitan Culture, Film Industry, Beautiful Girls, etc etc

Note: There is another Hyderabad in Pakistan

Famous it may not be, but the other Hyderabad has a population of over 1.3 million, so I don't think we can pretend it doesn't exist. (WT-en) Jpatokal 23:56, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
The India Hyderabad is much more famous than the Pakistani one. Do a survey if you like. However, I agree that it shouldn't be disambiguated, there should be a link to the Pakistani one that's all. (WT-en) Upamanyuwikivoyage 11:33, 14 January 2007 (EST)

There is a map of Hyderabad's local metro system on its official site [1]. Anyone wants to take a stab at converting it into an SVG? — (WT-en) Ravikiran 05:07, 21 June 2007 (EDT)

Taxi services

edit

It seems that Taxi services are very widespread in Hyderabad and not at all difficult to find. Therefore, listing large numbers of individual taxi services is against WT guidelines. I have cut the table out of the article of parked it here. Unless arguments to reinstate it are forthcoming in the next 30 days I will delete completely. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 05:00, 23 June 2011 (EDT)

Districts - better names?

edit

Good start, but can we have more informative names for Hyderabad districts? These names like North Zone, South Zone, etc. make no sense to a traveller or even for a long term resident like me. I'd prefer we go with things like old city, Secunderabad, etc. (WT-en) Ravikiran 02:44, 3 July 2012 (EDT)

Well, the zones are actually the official GHMC names, South Zone could be Old City, North Could be Secunderabad and Cantonment. East, West and Central could be further broken down. The zones are way too big to have a proper name or content. Any suggestions on what the zones could be broken down to? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) HarshaDevulapalli (talkcontribs)
That would be better. We have an explicit policy of not deferring to official names if the official names make no sense to a traveller. My own mental division of Hyderabad - and note that this is not authoritative - is:
  • Old City
  • New City (Abids, Koti, Lakdi ka pul, everything that came up immediately after independence when the new capital came up)
  • Secunderabad
  • Hi tech city and the posh areas - Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills, and maybe Panjagutta (the "New New city", so to speak - of interest to mostly software engineers. )
  • Kukatpally, Ameerpet and all those areas to the west..
  • East, which I have never visited :)

Once again, this is *my* mental division, which is instructive only to understand how a long term outsider thinks of Hyderabad. Perhaps I am wrong about Ameerpet and Punjagutta and they should be included in New city.. I can't help much with East Hyderabad, because I've never been there - but all I will say is that just because the size of the area is huge, it doesn't necessarily have to be split up. Once again, think from the traveller's point of view.. Is there a lot to see and do there? Restaurants? Shopping? If the content is likely to get overloaded, then by all means split it up. If not, we can keep it as it is and wait for the content to accumulate and then split it later. — (WT-en) Ravikiran 22:12, 6 July 2012 (EDT)

Districtification

edit

District map and regionlist template was added to the article in July last year, however the article was never districtified so I think district map and regionlist should be removed. --Saqib (talk) 14:28, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know—even if the city remains undistricted, the map at least provides some geographic context. Is there maybe a map that could replace it for the time being on Commons? --Peter Talk 16:04, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
If that's so, then I think every city article can have a districted map and region-list template. Right? --Saqib (talk) 17:28, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am not sure what to do. The problem is, not only is the districting incomplete, the districting as specified in the map and the section is unsatisfactory for a traveller. The contributor who made the map hasn't uploaded the svg, so we'll have to start afresh with that one. — Ravikiran (talk) 06:37, 17 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ravi, I'm willing to create a map, but we need to discuss on the districtification. --Saqib (talk) 20:18, 9 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

[unindent] This discussion ended inconclusively. Should this city be districted? Would some people who know the city please comment? Ikan Kekek (talk) 12:13, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Alternative banner for this article?

edit

old banner currently used in this article

suggested new banner (which is currently used in the parallel article in the Hebrew Wikivoyage)

In the Hebrew Wikivoyage we are currently using this banner instead of the one which is currently used here. Do you think too that this banner would would better than the existing one? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 02:22, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

I don't like all of the buildings in the panorama (only a few of them), so that's my one note of hesitation, but the new banner is so much clearer than the hazy though artsy picture of the tops of a historic building, so yes, I would favor the substitution, but I'm eager to hear what others think. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:13, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
I prefer the new banner only because the haziness of the existing one. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:47, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

De-touting and cleaning up "get in - by bus" section

edit

It seems that in the "Hyderabad#Get in - By Bus" section someone added a lot of (irrelevant) information about a particular bus company (it is overly represented in comparison to others). Some of the information also sounds like touting. I started rearranging this section and compressing information, but it would be great if more people could help making it better. Especially verifying the provided information would be very useful (e.g. are the telephone numbers really the official numbers of the bus stations - or are they specific phone numbers of a bus company?). Thanks a lot. Feel free to remove the {{advert}} template once this section looks better. dom (talk) 19:13, 11 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Please feel free to ruthlessly delete touting, and then delete that template. Thanks for helping! Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:02, 11 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
I removed a bunch of links. Which bus company is the problem? I don't see it and will preliminarily delete the advert template, but if there's something wrong, don't wait for someone else to change it, if you actually know the city. Many of us editors have never set foot in Hyderabad (for example, I haven't), so while we can usually recognize touting, we have no easy way of knowing which bus companies are most important.
