Pronunciation
editSo I have been to Itzehoe (or rather the Autobahn junction next to it) and have only ever heard it referred to as "Itzehoo" (long German o) never as "Itzehou" (as in "go"). Hence I think the comparison of the o sound to "floor" makes more sense. But please do correct me, if I am wrong after all... Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:14, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- "go" may be incorrect, but "floor" is not better. -- FriedhelmW (talk) 15:24, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- How so? We might also end up using IPA symbols. If you don't feel comfortable trying to explain it in English, you can also post it onto my talk page in German. Kind regards. Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:26, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- In IPA I would write oː, floor has ɔː -- FriedhelmW (talk) 15:35, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- Ok. Short of using IPA symbols (which are for some reason almost never used on en-WV, even in Phrasebooks), what could we do to make this difference clear? Hobbitschuster (talk) 15:41, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- We could write "like in the German word froh". -- FriedhelmW (talk) 15:54, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- That's certainly a possibility, but we generally don't assume the knowledge of any language besides English (though I could certainly find examples of untranslated foreign terms floating around on some pages). Maybe we could change the "like floor" to "similar to" floor. Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:15, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- Part of the difficulty is that the same English word is pronounced differently in different places. I pronounce "floor" almost as if it were "flawr", but a little further forward in my mouth. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:22, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- So how would you as a native speaker advise us to make this point clear? Hobbitschuster (talk) 16:24, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- Just do your best, and if some visitor gets the pronunciation slightly wrong, so be it. We're not going to get all users to understand IPA symbols. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:58, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
