Talk:Nice
I think this article needs to be summarized and squeezed into Nice. --(WT-en) Evan 09:48, 9 Dec 2003 (PST)
I agree. While airports sometimes end up falling under the "would you spend the night there?" category, I'd prefere to imagine that they are not actually destinations. A lot of this can be broken up and added to Nice. Good info tho. (WT-en) Majnoona
I just realized there is no Nice yet! I'm just going to move this there then... most of the info is really a good start for a Nice article...(WT-en) Majnoona
Well, I'm considering going to Nice in late-August. I'll be happy to add whatever I come across to the article. But since it's really barren, if anybody who knows anything about Nice could add it before I depart, that'd be really helpful. -- Nils
Nice is not to be missed tourist trap and all. Great art museum right near the bus station. Then there are graet museunms dedicated to Chagall, Matisse, Cherat etc. Some great Italian food. Hotel onbbies on the Rue d'Anglaise to stroll in. Take a bus, don't drive, to surrounding towns to see some great estates, Eugenie Rothschild, etc and good small museums, Meight etc.(spelling throughout article)
Take the train for an afternoon at St. Tropez. The Annunciato is amazing, small and wonderful. Actually, you take a train and either boat or bust to get to St. Tropez.
Crime
editI don't agree with what's written about criminality. I know the city very well (I live in Nice) and you can easyly stay safe, you just have to be careful and respect some security advice as driving with your car's doors locked.
The truth is criminality was a big problem a few years ago, but authorities made a strong effort to stop it and they quite succeed. (WT-en) Julien 03:24, 3 June 2006 (EDT)
- Well, then edit the paragraph accordingly. But remember, remarks about safety in Wikivoyage are not about giving a city a bad image but about pointing travellers to existing problems in order to escape them. --(WT-en) Túrelio 09:56, 3 June 2006 (EDT)
- I know what remarks about safety are made for, but I sill think this is exagerated in this article. But Nice is my home town, so my point of view may be biased, therfore before editing the paragraph I'd like to know what's the others wikivoyagers' feeling about that. (WT-en) Julien 05:04, 4 June 2006 (EDT)
- Well, I was in Nice in April this year for a medical conference and I did NOT experience any problem of that kind in the city (except of some streets blocked due to construction work for the new tram, but of course that's not criminal ;-) ). So, I have no objections against changing that paragraph. --(WT-en) Túrelio 14:36, 4 June 2006 (EDT)
- By the way, (WT-en) Julien, if you know about churches in Nice, could you kindly check whether the catholic (and, if available, also the protestant) main church of Nice is among those listed in [1]? When that is not the case, would you mind to add that information, including location and mass times? Thank you. --(WT-en) Túrelio 14:44, 4 June 2006 (EDT)
- So I've changed the crime sections and I did add information about churches in the city. Regards. (WT-en) Julien 09:58, 12 June 2006 (EDT)
- Well done. Thanks. --(WT-en) Túrelio 02:43, 13 June 2006 (EDT)

It is doubtful basis of evidence to say that because during a few days stay nothing "criminal" happened to you, therefore the city is "safe". I had my wallet lifted on a bus - the police station towards later evening was crowded with victims and the policeman said this happened like this every day. May not have happened to you but it is commonplace hazard. Last week my neighbour disturbed two burglars trying to lever open the front door of my apartment. Any regular reading of the daily Nice Matin will provide you with a broader basis of evidence than your own personal experience. Talk with anyone on the receiving end of criminality and your complacency will be shaken. "Much worse than Paris, and that is bad enough!" I was told. If you take suitable precautions, it will just happen to someone else instead.
Honeymoon
editI've planned my honeymoon for early April. We are spending a week in Nice and a week in Venice. If anyone has any advice or recommendations, I would love to hear them. We are spending the next few months learning a bit of French too. I've heard that making an effort to speak the language can often lead to more hospitable attitudes.
Also, I've booked the Suisse - Hotels Ocre et Azur for our stay. Any comments?
Cheap eat
editWe can do better than McDonald's no?
Well there's always Socca - a hot thick pancake-type traditional Nicois dish made from chickpea flour, cut in slices and served very hot. Not expensive and fills a gap mid day
Eat
editMoved from the main article
1 September 2011: Having eaten at L'Occitanie this evening, this section is in urgent need of update. I'm English, but I work in France (Paris) on a frequent basis, I'm a Francophile at heart, and I speak passable French. Referring anyone to the above restaurant is at best misleading and at worst would spoil someone's evening. It's utterly devoid of any form of atmosphere, (in fact, it's closer in style to a cheap cafe than a restaurant), the staff are clearly disinterested in anyone not French, the better tables are mysteriously "plein" if you have an English accent, and the food, whilst palatable, was completely unremarkable. You should also be prepared for your dining partner to receive their courses at different times to you. The wine, for which the choice was limited to colour, was at least acceptable. This was bad enough that we left after the main course and went elsewhere for dessert and coffee. Don't be misled into making the trek to this very ordinary, unfriendly restaurant. —The preceding comment was added by 83.206.134.129 (talk • contribs)
- In category 'Eat' I added a list of what to eat in Nice similar to what was does in Singapore. Nice is a 'foodie' city with many choices. Is this guide food oriented or restaurant oriented or a mix? I prefer a mix. This gives the reader a guide of food specialties that can be found in many places. Restaurant entries give the reader a selection of what can be found at only one particular restaurant. —The preceding comment was added by ParisYank (talk • contribs)
- Including a section on local specialties is a great idea and absolutely helpful to readers. Some of what's listed isn't really so much Niçois but Provençal, though, so it's possible to link to Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur#Eat for readers to get additional information, although that section might itself be tweaked to make the specialties more visible at a glance, etc. I think that when a city or region has local specialties or if there are good general remarks to make about the food scene in a given place, it's best to put those at the beginning of the "Eat" section, as in this article, and if the section is long enough, one or more separate subheadings are appropriate. Looking at the "Eat" section of some star articles might inspire you. Most of the star city articles for cities big enough to have their own specialties seem to be districted (divided into separate articles for each neighborhood), but have a look at Hiroshima#Eat and Okayama#Eat. Also trawl through the "Eat" sections of guide articles such as Bergen#Eat, Chengdu#Eat, Cuzco#Eat, Da_Nang#Eat (just going alphabetically and looking at articles of non-districted cities). The "Eat" sections of districted cities on the lists of star and guide articles may also inspire you. They aren't normally supposed to have complete listings for any restaurant but can sometimes go on at some length about local specialties and the local food scene generally, as you'll see in Singapore#Eat, Chicago#Eat, San Francisco#Eat, etc. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:08, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
- OK, thank you. The list of 'what to eat' is longer than I first intended and certainly parts duplicated in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur#Eat and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur#Drink. I had not intended #Eat to be final but a work in progress so I appreciate suggestions. #Eat sections of star articles are helpful. I will continue to work on Nice#Eat before starting an update of Nice#Buy as that section needs help. #Buy seems to have the same dilemma, i.e., 'what to buy' seems as important as 'where to buy.' ParisYank (talk) 10:00, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
- Not a dilemma, in my opinion. Provide all the information you think could be useful to a visitor. If some of it applies more generally to the region, it can always be moved later. Ikan Kekek (talk) 11:27, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

To Guide
editI think this article is almost a Guide now. What gives me pause are passages like this:
"Nice is also known for several museums, entry to most of which (as of July 2008) is free."
"All shops are now allowed to open every Sunday and, as of November 2010, at least the following had started to open every Sunday: H&M, Zara, Fnac, Bershka, Celio, Virgin Megastore, and Spar. Some locations of Galleries Lafayette are now open several Sundays each month but not all of them, the same goes for Nice Etoile Shopping Centre.
Postcards (as many other things) vary greatly in price. Do some comparison shopping as the price range is between 20 cents and €1 for a normal postcard. Typically they will set you back 25 cents each (correct at June-2009)." [my bolding]
To anyone who's in Nice now or was there recently: Please update these things.
The other thing that sticks out to me is the relative lack of specific templated listings in the "Buy" section. It would be helpful to visitors to have a separate listing for Galleries Lafayette, for example, listing the addresses of the locations and their opening hours. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:34, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
- "Buy" section needs a big update. I find this section oriented to department stores that tend to have the same brands no matter which city. OK there should be a minor list of department stores but I propose listing items and boutiques that are specifically oriented to Nice and the Riviera such as perfumes, Provence table cloths and other unique items oriented to visitors, i.e., things including gift-oriented stuff. Certainly any new item will be in List format. ParisYank (talk) 17:06, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Alternative banner for this article?
editIn the Hebrew Wikivoyage we are currently using this banner instead of the one which is currently used here. Do you think too that this banner would would better than the existing one? ויקיג'אנקי (talk) 02:30, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- I prefer this new proposed banner, because it is framed better. Texugo (talk) 02:38, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- I prefer the current banner because I prefer the closer look at the buildings with red-tiled roofs. I wouldn't be unhappy with the change if others prefer the new banner, though. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:04, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- The existing banner is far more interesting. Andrewssi2 (talk) 06:42, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

- I'm not so sure I don't like the uniform haziness of the old banner better than the new version of it. However, either way, I prefer the current banner. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:47, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
- I vote for the current banner because the colors are better, and it focuses on three of the main attractions of the city: the sea, the old town and the market. Fabimaru (talk) 17:18, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Scooter - motorbike
editIs it particularly dangerous to drive scooters in Nice? --Erik den yngre (talk) 11:35, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
- Not really. At least is it not dangerous to drive a bike there. Maybe more than countries in the North where people drive more respectfully. I will remove this statement. - Fabimaru (talk) 12:05, 6 July 2015 (UTC)
