The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is a useless tourist trap and should be removed from this itinerary. Finding the towers by metro is just as easy. 58.35.92.226 04:49, 22 February 2011 (EST)

What next?

edit

What should be done with this article? The last substantive edit — actually changing text as opposed to things like adding a banner or updating a "Get out" header to "Go next" — was in 2011 and it has been tagged for merging to Shanghai for over a year, so there's a good case for doing the merge and either making this a redirect or just deleting it.

On the other hand, Shanghai has 23 million people — roughly the population of Australia and considerably larger than London or New York — and it is a Chinese city, so it can certainly be overwhelming for a first-time visitor. It is also one of the world's most visited cities; see the 'F' column at Wikivoyage:World cities/Large. There is also a good case that an article along these lines is a fine idea.

Opinions? Volunteers for the considerable work that would be needed to make a really good article of this? Pashley (talk) 17:50, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

The article needs some cleanup to make the text more fluent, perhaps some more attractions, a couple of good pictures and a map or at least a dynamic map with the PointsOfInterest. And someone who has some first hand knowledge of Shanghai (yourself, User:Andrewssi2, who else? some Chinese Wikivoyagers?). ϒpsilon (talk) 19:53, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I can't think of any information that this article would cover that shouldn't be in the Shanghai article, and as such can't imagine that anything other than a merge would be the right option, otherwise we'll have a lot of unnecessary duplication. Wikivoyage:What is an article? and Wikivoyage:Itineraries are pretty clear that we shouldn't split up city information unless there is a clear and obvious reason for doing so. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:16, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm actually 50:50 on this one. I have been living in Shanghai for over 2 months now, and I am still very much overwhelmed! For the first time visitor is is actually very difficult to know where to start. On the other hand I agree completely that articles should not be split up.
By the way, the itinerary reads like a 'Choose your own adventure' book (without the choice). My main concern actually is who would actually follow this guide verbatim, if at all? I would prefer a dynamic map with the 'top 15' attractions. Andrewssi2 (talk) 01:03, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Even though the city is pretty big, but looking at the city's district articles, I found there're almost same number of sights to see and activities to do as in other big cities. I can't figure out how a first timer can be overwhelmed? --Saqib (talk) 01:12, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would say that for the first time traveler, the 'Bund' area is a natural starting point. After that it does become confusing. User:Pashley has done an awesome job in breaking up the districts into usable pieces, however some suggested itineraries would have been useful to me when I first arrived. The itinerary would not be a long story but a short bullet point list in the main article like this:
3 Day Suggested Itinerary
  • Walk down the Bund
  • Activity 2
  • Activy 3 etc

There is some itinerary-ish material, very brief, at Shanghai#Do. Pashley (talk) 12:48, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
