Not up to date This article has had only occasional updates since about 2016. The quality and districting statuses of all the listed cities were updated in May, 2022, but the other statistics are in many cases several years old.

Two other columns are added for each city:

• The U column indicates whether the city includes any sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
• The F column shows rank from a Forbes magazine article on the world's twenty most visited cities, based on a 2013 Mastercard report. The top two on that list (Bangkok and London) get almost 16 million visitors a year each, the next four over 10 million each, and even the 20th gets almost 5 million.

Wikipedia gives rankings of the top ten world tourism destinations, based on a UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) report for 2011. We add two columns based on that:

• Visitor rank, by number of arriving visitors
• Spending rank, by tourist industry receipts

Most destinations in those rankings are countries, rather than cities, but mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are treated as separate destinations.

The original Wikipedia list has 224 cities with population above two million. We take the top 100, then add four more cities because they are on the F, V or S lists. Three of those are not on the WP list; we give them arbitrary "ranks" over 500 so that sorting on the rank column still works correctly.
