Split

edit

Terence, I was actually thinking about exactly the same thing when I saw your message, because I was wondering where to slot in the National Museum (which falls right on the boundary). The problem is deciding where to draw the line -- I don't want to have too many sections either. Just listing out the 'subsections' now covered, we have:

  • Boat Quay
  • Clarke Quay
  • Robertson Quay
  • Mohamed Sultan
  • Raffles Place (incl. Merlion, Fullerton)
  • City Hall/Bras Basah
  • Marina Centre (Suntec, Esplanade, the hotels)

And then we need to have a clear dividing line between this area and Orchard (I've been using Dhoby Ghaut stn). (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:08, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

Thinking out loud, Clarke, Robertson and Mohamed Sultan obviously form one group, and City Hall/Bras Basah/Marina Centre another. The problem is splitting up Boat Quay and Raffles Place between these two. (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:14, 12 October 2006 (EDT)
Boat Quay, Raffles Place, Shenton Way and Telok Ayer form one group. There seems to be no mention about Lau Pa Sat anyway. --(WT-en) Terence Ong 05:52, 12 October 2006 (EDT)
Btw, Telok Ayer Street, Amoy Street, Club Street etc. belong to Chinatown, according to the road signs and there are Chinatown boards in the Telok Ayer Street area. Shenton Way, Tanjong Pagar (the section bordered by Maxwell Road, Kandallayur Street, Telok Ayer Street at the junction of Amoy Street Food Centre, Cecil Street and Stanley Street) belong to Telok Ayer and not Tanjong Pagar, The nothern part of Telok Ayer Street (north of Amoy Street Food Centre), Amoy Street and a tiny portion of Stanley Street belongs to Chinatown and not Tanjong Pagar) this is in your map FYI, Marina Bay, Shenton Way, Raffles Place and Boat Quay should form one page instead of the above suggestion. I hope we can do the change asap. --(WT-en) Terence Ong 06:03, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

Proposed split

Districts in Wikivoyage are set for travellers' benefit, not according to bureaucratic dictat, and nobody goes to Boat Quay thinking they're going to Chinatown. I've been thinking about rolling together the Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar maps, they're a little too small and the distinction is kind of useless...

So is your proposal the following?

  1. Marina Bay, Shenton Way, Raffles Place and Boat Quay ("Downtown"?)
  2. Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay, Mohamed Sultan ("Riverside"?)
  3. City Hall, Bras Basah (err... "City Hall"?)

Is Nicoll Highway the dividing line between Marina Bay and City Hall/Bras Basah? And what do you suggest we call these districts? (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:38, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

I've attached a crude map shown the districts above, please comment. The original can be found here. (WT-en) Jpatokal 07:59, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

I see, but the Chinatown border is too huge. Anything west of Chin Swee Road should be in Riverside and anything east of Cecil Street should be in Downtown. In 2001, the Tanjong Pagar area had Chinatown road signs, but not anymore, thus forming another area (Tanjong Pagar Conservation Area), but well for convenience sake, merge with Chinatown. Tanjong Pagar's too small a place anyway. --(WT-en) Terence Ong 09:13, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

For the area bordered by Bras Basah Road, Nicoll Highway North Bridge Road, Connaught Drive and Parliament Place, can we move it to Downtown. As for the remaining area of "City Hall", should we call it Bras Basah? Bugis can be merged with Bras Basah and Kampong Glam forming another district. You are on IRC but idling, can you please come on IRC. --(WT-en) Terence Ong 09:21, 12 October 2006 (EDT)

I've uploaded a new version according to your suggestions, take a look. (You'll probably have to shift-reload to see the changes.) I don't think the name "Bras Basah" is very intuitive for describing Bugis and Kampong Glam though...? (WT-en) Jpatokal 01:34, 16 October 2006 (EDT)
How about the name, "Museum" or "Rochor"? Or should we merge Kampong Glam and Bugis to be known as "Kampong Glam". The name "City Hall" doesn't sound really appopriate as its already not in the City Hall zone of Downtown Core. --(WT-en) Terence Ong 06:32, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
"Museum" is too vague and "Rochor" makes me think of Rochor Canal Rd, which is pretty far away from eg. Fort Canning. Kampong Glam and Bugis are already merged.
So far, the best option I can see is calling the current red box "Bras Basah", and keeping Bugis/Kampong Glam in their own article. (WT-en) Jpatokal 10:15, 18 October 2006 (EDT)
Ok, Bras Basah then. That's settled finally. ;) Though the National Library area and Purvis Street should be in Bugis, what do you think?
If you don't mind, would you like to discuss other issues over IRC or IM? --(WT-en) Terence Ong 01:33, 19 October 2006 (EDT)
How about you draw the district split the way you think it should be? (WT-en) Jpatokal 00:35, 16 November 2006 (EST)
So is it all right to split now? (WT-en) Terence Ong 05:37, 27 December 2006 (EST)

Time formats

edit

May I recommend using the same time formats for all the Singapore articles?

Our main Singapore city state article has Star status and uses the universally understood, unambiguous and usually shorter 24 hour time format (as does Singapore/East Coast and Singapore/Little India). --118.93nzp (talk) 07:58, 9 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

24 hr formats for ASEAN member states will be the rule. Seligne (talk) 09:19, 9 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

"The static map is much clearer than the dynamic map, so why is the dynamic map being used?"

edit

Hi Ikan Kekek, you asked why we don't stick to the static map. I think there are plenty of reasons:

  • The static map is 10 years old and therefore outdated.
  • Numbering on static map does not correspond to numbers in the article. Some places might not even be around anymore, but I didn't check that.
  • Land coverage of static map does not correspond to the one on the overview article anymore.
  • With a click of a button it is possible to export all sights, do's, hotels, etc. as gpx file to your phone. Huge advantage in my opinion. No need to search for places anymore.

We can try to keep the static map up-to-date but the dynamic map is automatically updated. So to me static maps in general are old school in my opinion. But I have to admit that they are often easier to read than dynamic maps. --Renek78 (talk) 15:57, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think the ease in reading, especially in this kind of example, trumps other concerns, since the map can be updated. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:41, 15 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I wanted to add something to this. I also think the static maps are better. I tried to improve the dynamic ones by adding the MRT lines and stations, but it still is a far cry from the static one.
I wanted to update the Singapore maps a while ago, because not only are the listings out of date, but even the train lines have completely changed since the maps were made. The problem is that there's no SVG versions for the maps available (except for a big uncropped one: File:Singapore.svg, which is so old, it is missing the whole Marina area). I tried to get into contact with the person who made the maps to get the SVGs, but I think he's not active any more. Updating the Singapore maps is on my list of things I want to eventually get done, but it is quite a daunting task, so not sure whether I can even do it. There are some great mapmakers on this site who might be able to help, if they have the time, for example, Saqib. You just have to tell them what you want them to do. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:50, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sure , drop the details on my talk page and I will begin working. --Saqib (talk) 16:51, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Both maps on this page are now updated and back, as are most of the others in the centre of Singapore (missing Orchard Road). Let me know if you spot any errors or would like me to change anything. Drat70 (talk) 13:49, 23 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I still think the static map is much more useful. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:19, 23 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: I might not have been clear in my previous reply: the maps I updated were the static ones (there's one in the get around section and one further down in the drink section). Drat70 (talk) 00:38, 24 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
