Districts edit

Tampa is a large city and needs to be divided into districts. I had added districts a few years ago, but district pages were never created and this was done without discussion. I've lived within the Tampa media market for over a decade (and watch the local news occasionally) and so have a good idea of the broader-scale districts, but it would probably be better if a Tampa resident chimes in on where to define borders between districts and where to fit some of the voids in this proposal. I propose the following (all districts are links to the corresponding Wikipedia article):

  • Downtown Tampa — bordered by the Hillsborough River (W), I-275/I-4 (N), Nuccio Pkwy (NE), and Meridian Ave/Beneficial Blvd (E). The downtown would include Harbor Island. Not sure if Tampa Heights should be here rather than North Tampa, although I-275 is a rather clear barrier between the two.
  • Channelside — Could also be "Channelside District" or "Channel District". Bordered by Meridian Ave/Benefcial Blvd (W) & Crosstown Expwy (N). A couple references suggest the Times Forum is included in Channelside, but the Convention Center is not, so perhaps the area south of Chennelside Dr and between Franklin St and Beneficial Blvd could be added to this district.
  • Ybor City — From Wikipedia: Historically, the boundaries of “Greater Ybor City” stretched from Tampa Bay on the south to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Buffalo Avenue) on the north, and from the Hillsborough River on the west to 40th Street on the east. This would include all of today’s neighborhoods of Historic Ybor, East Ybor, VM Ybor, and Ybor Heights plus a portion of East Tampa...The official boundaries of the Historic Ybor neighborhood are I-4 to the north, 22nd Street to the east, Adamo Drive to the south, and Nebraska Avenue to the west. The area of this district is about 1 square mile (about 2.6 km2). Though modern Ybor City also includes some of the surrounding area, its exact dimensions are loosely defined and subject to debate.
  • Hyde Park — Includes Hyde Park Village, Soho District. From Wikipedia: Hyde Park is located adjacent to the University of Tampa and Downtown. Roughly, the boundaries of the neighborhood include the Hillsborough Bay to the east, Kennedy Blvd to the north, historic and picturesque Bayshore Boulevard to the east and south, and Armenia Avenue to the west.
  • Davis Islands — Self-explanatory
  • West Tampa — From Wikipedia: The historical boundaries of West Tampa are the Hillsborough River and Rome Avenue to the east, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd (formerly Buffalo Ave.) to the north, Kennedy Blvd. (formerly Grand Central Ave.) to the south, and Dale Mabry Highway to the west. The w:West Tampa Historic District encompasses much of this area, and Interstate 275, built in the 1960s, runs through the approximate center of the neighborhood. The land area of the district is about 10 square miles (about 26 km2).
  • South Tampa — Interbay Peninsula south of Kennedy & excluding the Hyde Park district. From Wikipedia: South Tampa has two common use meanings. Geographically South Tampa is located on the Interbay Peninsula and it is surrounded by Tampa Bay, Hillsborough Bay, and West Tampa...The area begins immediately south of Kennedy Blvd. Used to describe a socio-economic unit, people often refer to South Tampa as the area between Kennedy Blvd to the north and Gandy Boulevard to the south with the area north of this border referred to as North of Kennedy (NOK) and the area south of this border referred to as South of Gandy (SOG). The implication is that South Tampa is a more affluent area than NOK or SOG.
  • North Tampa — From Wikipedia: North Tampa comprises the city of Tampa communities of Forest Hills, Harvey Heights, North Tampa (neighborhood), Tampa Overlook, Temple Crest, Terrace Park and University Square, and the areas in New Tampa.

Are you sure this needs districtifying? This article is not overly large at the moment. LtPowers (talk) 03:50, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
The Tampa page might not be too large at the moment, but it's a big city and needs districts. Is there any particular reason to wait until the page is overly crowded with listings before dividing into districts? I happened to be in Tampa Friday and picked up some visitor guides/brochures and browsing through them and seeing the districts, I thought of dividing Tampa into districts. I'm thinking that when WV leaves beta, there will be many, many more editors and it would be nice to have the geographical hierarchy in place. The whole state of Florida's hierarchy needs to be tweaked. Orlando—especially—is in much more desperate need of being divided into districts, but I'm less familiar with the Orlando area than Tampa. Well, I realize you were speaking generically, not using site jargon, but we only districtify huge cities, not "big" cities. =) But even speaking generally, it has always been our policy to only create district articles when a city's article has become too large to be useful. Right now, Tampa's page is just fine, and so splitting that information out into district articles would result in district articles that are largely empty -- either several articles with only a few listings each, or one/two articles with a good amount and the rest with almost nothing. That's not what we want. When we districtify a huge city, we want every district to have a strong base of good information ready to go into an article. Ok, then. In the future, this discussion will be at the top of the talk page and will be a good place to start when Tampa needs districts. AHeneen (talk) 02:21, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely. As you add content, it may be worth figuring out which district it should be in. The Sleep section is starting to get long; it may be worth considering organizing it by district, which would also give us a head start on the future district articles. Tampa recent edits edit

Can someone who knows Tampa please check out recent edits. --Traveler100 (talk) 21:05, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

That account was blocked on Wikipedia for making edits to Tampa articles that were called "dubious" in reverts (w:Special:Contributions/24.164.7.74). I'd suggest a revert with a request on the IP's talk page for clarification would be prudent. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:41, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Downtowner edit

I was walking around downtown and noticed this thing driving around:

It looks like an enclosed, stretched electric golf cart.

Probably worth mentioning in the article but I don't know enough about it to do an informed write-up.

Looks like it's based on this: http://ridedowntowner.com

Facebook photo edit

FB has a lovely photo of a giant pink flamingo statue at Tampa Airport.

I do not see a suitable image on Commons. Could someone add one? Pashley (talk) 00:05, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Trolley edit

It seems like the In-Towner Trolley might have been eliminated. Not sure though. Lazarus1255 (talk) 03:10, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
