New Zealand?

edit

Last year I nominated the article for FTT, without carefully reading through it. It's supposed to be featured in late April.

But there are no POIs from New Zealand, nevertheless according to the map, Cook sailed around the islands on three voyages presumably as the first European. In addition to the Cook strait between the North and South Islands and the English name for the country's highest mountain, there has to be some monuments to his journeys in NZ notable enough to be included here (especially as NZ later became part of the British Empire). Is anyone familiar with the explorer and New Zealand to add something?

Are there some other important things missing? Ypsilon (talk) 16:01, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

See Wikipedia:Category:Monuments and memorials to James Cook. I will investigate a couple of the NZ ones listed. AlasdairW (talk) 21:29, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
FWIW, the English name is now Aoraki / Mt Cook, not Mt Cook on its own. The original name in Te Reo is the primary name, though. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 09:32, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have added a couple of New Zealand listings. I also added details of two replica HM Bark Endeavours which can be visited - one in the Whitby, the other in Sydney. See this list of memorials from the Captain Cook Society. AlasdairW (talk) 00:00, 2 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I added another NZ listing. I am beginning to question whether the Christchurch one should remain as it is just a statue, but not in a location of historic interest. On the other hand it is the only one that is likely to be on the route of somebody making a brief visit to the country. AlasdairW (talk) 22:26, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

List of memorials

edit

Although it is not strictly a primary link, I think it could be useful to link to the Captain Cook Society list of memorials. Most of these memorials are insignificant and I don't think they should be listed here, but providing a link to a longer list that lets readers find a memorial near home is worthwhile. Should this link be allowed? AlasdairW (talk) 22:16, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sounds like a good idea. Given the difficult situation around these statues in Australia it is probably better to refer to a current list elsewhere. Andrewssi2 (talk) 22:19, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
