Merging the article could work, though there is a lot to say about the Egyptian Museum. My preference would be to have one page for downtown (possibly also merging the Ramses Station area). Then, have a subpage about the museum, in extended detail, while having a short summary in the downtown page. Though, there don't seem to be other pages for specific places like the museum. Washington, D.C./Penn Quarter‎

My suggestion would be to keep the National Gallery of Art, National Museum of American History, and National Museum of Natural History in the Penn Quarter article, since they all border the district. (I definitely think of the National Gallery of Art and the ice rink as part of Penn Quarter) Though, it might work to duplicate those listings on a "National Mall" page. Anything about the other museums, on the other side of the mall, is indeed out of place in the Penn Quarter article, nor is that the place to give a quick overview of the history of the National Mall. East End map

We should try to coordinate on these maps so we don't duplicate too much of each others work (I spent a ton of time building up the svg base street map for DC). Since the map is already created sans travel icons, it's easy enough for me to just go forward and add them to the Wikivoyage-style map in place. (I usually hold off on adding incomplete sections, but the see section would certainly be ready.) That way we also have only WT content on the map, which makes the visual less busy. --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 17:37, 6 January 2009 (EST)

Take a look at Image:Paris_1st_arrondissement_map_with_listings.png, as an example, of what we should aim for. Is that something you can do? What software do you use to make your maps? If you are compiling the map from satellite imagery, then I understand it can take a while (like my Cairo maps). However, for D.C. and most places in the U.S., we fortunately have tons of GIS data available for use, with proper licensing/usage. It's very easy for me to utilize my GIS data and whip something up quickly yet with a professional look. With a little bit of scripting, I can envision this being further simplified, such as extracting listing from wikivoyage and updating the map as wikivoyage gets updated. For now, my Penn Quarter map is just version 1.0. Right now I have all buildings on my map, but am adjusting it to probably include just important buildings, and will add a POI key and other enhancements and style changes to make it more consistent with other maps. Well, I'm interested to see where you go with it. I make my maps right in Inkscape, and aim to make them look like the ones in my (WT-en) gallery, per the standards developed at Project:How to draw a map. Not to say that this is a superior style to alternatives, although I do prefer maps parsimonious. I'd venture the tradeoff being made between an SVG map like mine and a generated map like yours is between control and updatability. With the SVG, anyone can edit it, and make any adjustments they please. Whereas with yours, as you say, it might be possible to automate the listings placement. Were an SVG not available, of course, it would be far faster and simpler to auto-generate the map from available data, as you have, but in this case we do have the SVG ready.

This might be a better discussion for the Project:Mapmaking Expedition, where we could solicit other opinions on where we should be taking this. --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 18:52, 6 January 2009 (EST)

Styles on my map are easily adjustable, and I'm looking at the other maps and the guidelines to try and keep consistent where possible. The biggest challenge is making maps that look good and are readable at thumbnail size on screen (e.g. make Metro station labels huge with simple and huge icons), but also look good when printed or viewed at large size. Another thing that is needed on the maps are scale bars.

As for SVGs, those will be possible for my maps at some point, either when I get a ArcGIS software/computer upgrade or when I can regenerate them with open source software that can do SVGs. (unfortunately Quantum GIS is not quite there, but has potential) Or, I might be able to use GeoServer, or something else.

Anyway, once I'm farther along with the DC and Cairo pages, I have my eyes set on working on the NYC pages. Maps are needed there. And, might dual-purpose my maps for Wikipedia too. (I promised to make NYC neighborhood maps for Wikipedia while ago, and need to go ahead and do them!) Thus a time-efficient, flexible approach is needed, yet one that makes them professional looking.
