Welcome
editHello Quahadi! Welcome to Wikivoyage.
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page.
If you are a Wikipedian then you may notice some differences in policies and the style of our articles. These include:
- NPOV → be fair (not quite the same thing!)
- be bold → plunge forward
- Village pump → travellers' pub
- External links → We do not use a separate external links section, but incorporate primary links only into the text itself.
- sandbox → graffiti wall
- stub notes → Article status notes
If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. Thanks for contributing! - (WT-en) Huttite 07:05, 11 March 2009 (EDT)

editPlease do not copy text directly from Wikipedia. It is a copyright violation to do that! Because of conflicting copyright licences you cannot use Wikipedia content in Wikivoyage. It is probably pointless to do that anyway because our articles have a different layout in any case. - (WT-en) Huttite 07:05, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
Your contribution to Široki Brijeg has been taken directly from Wikipedia:Široki Brijeg - apparently it was a direct copy of the wiki-text. Unfortunately most of the Wikipedia features do not work on Wikivoyage. As the content is also a copyright violation I have blanked the page and added a city template to start over with original content. - (WT-en) Huttite 07:05, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
On my talk page the following discussion has taken place
- Hi yes, the article about Široki Brijeg is a copy from wikipedia. A mostly edited by myself. GNGU free documentation licence does allow even such copies.Right???--(WT-en) Anto 09:52, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
- If you are the only person who wrote it, yes. If even one other person edited it there on Wikipedia, then no. (WT-en) Texugo 19:04, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
- Well that, or you go back in the history and find a version where you are the only editor, if there is one --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 19:18, 11 March 2009 (EDT)
I thought it better that the discussion continue here.
If you have written ALL of the Wikipedia content then yes you can copy it to Wikivoyage. If even one other person has edited the Wikipedia article then your copyright is contaminated by that person's copyright. In my opinion, you then jointly have a copyright over the article that is under Wikipedia's GNU licence. Unfortunately, the terms of the Wikipedia's GNU licence make the article incompatible with using it here on Wikivoyage.
However, the copyright issue is only a distraction from the real problem. What you contributed to the page does not follow Wikivoyage's Manual of Style. The existing Wikipedia content needed to be severely edited to shoehorn it into our standard article template. Please bear in mind that we are writing a travel guide here, not an encyclopedia. Our priorities are different, consequently the direct copying of Wikipedia content is is not really appropriate for Wikivoyage in any case. I hope you understand that Wikivoyage has different goals to Wikipedia.
I have edited the content that you contributed to the Široki Brijeg to fit it into one of our standard templates and provided a link to the Wikipedia article so that the original text can still be found, and read. That way if a traveler is looking for encyclopedic content then they can find it. But that content is better on Wikipedia that Wikivoyage. I am sorry if your first experience of Wikivoyage is a bit of a culture shock after Wikipedia but you are welcome continue to edit the article, and improve it, provided our Manual of Style is followed. - (WT-en) Huttite 04:17, 12 March 2009 (EDT)
