Social action?

Yeah it is, but this trip is gonna be a bit more action, although it will be just as sociable! I'm planning to work on a project in Nairobi called FOCUS, which is basically a Christian project working in the slums of Nairobi which equips people from the local university to help the people in the slums. It should be pretty awesome - I've done similar work in High Schools in Maseru, Lesotho before. This FOCUS project is supported by Tearfund and I'll be out there for about 6 weeks or so. It's gonna be absolutely immense, and living, eating, sleeping Africa is a million times better than staying in the touristy confines of cities and game reserves. Thanks - it had needed doing for sometime. Yes, I had noticed the templates, and if I had used them from the beginning, I would have continued to do so. However, cutting each name, address, telephone number etc, etc and pasting it between the correct brackets is quite laborious and, to be honest, I felt that the general overall effect was about the same. Unchonqify

Thanks for pointing that out to me. I did just have a quick look at this site this guy claims to be from, and its not what i chonqed, so its okay! The one I chonqd was very different, and is definitely not this Dominica search page he mentioned! The one I chonqd is here [1].

As for unchonqing someone, it might be possible, but I'm not going to do it in this case - he added a completely unrelated link to our wiki, which constitutes wikispam. The whole point in spammers spamming wikis is that even when it gets editted out, the link is still sitting in the history pages, and thus whenever search engine bots come and read through all the links on wikivoyage, his will get read, thus increasing his websites page rank. What chonqing a site does (I think!) is submits the offending link to a database of known wikispammers which gets passed onto search engines so that their pageranks are fair... North Hollywood

There doesn't seem to be any consensus yet on how to handle all of the mini-cities in LA (Talk:Hollywood (disambiguation) has some discussion, amongst other places), but I went ahead and created a North Hollywood article rather than put a sleep listing on a regional article - I'm worried that including hotels on region articles opens up a whole new front for the "which nine?" debate that is probably best avoided at all costs. If needed we can always redirect this article later, but it was already linked from the San Fernando Valley article so it probably would have been created eventually anyhow. -- (WT-en) Ryan 04:57, 18 February 2007 (EST)

Berneray

Hi there! Well, that's what I get for being too eager to help out (hehehe). I just noticed that there were a series of edits to Berneray being done by an anonymous IP (that is, an unregistered user: **.**.***.**), who was making mass deletions of information on the page. Since they weren't offering any sort of explanation as to why they were doing what they were doing, there was no way to verify that the deletions they were making were valid. So I reverted all the deletions that person had been making. I see that Wrh2 reverted them even further, so I guess I didn't go far back enough with the edits I made. Anyway, sorry for jumping the gun there. Oh, and yes, I've been doing a lot of work over on WikiCars as well. It's looking better every day, but it'll be quite a while before our community is as large as WT's. Regions in New Mexico

Uh, why did you make all those changes to the region structure for New Mexico? Both the parenthetical form and non-parenthetical ones are in use for states, and because New Mexico is a fairly well-developed state as regards sub-pages, now there is one heck of a lot of redirect-fixing that needs to be done. Well, thanks much for trying. However, there's now a "cascade" of other problems connected with known glitchiness in the "isIn" breadcrumb code. Havelock Island

I like it. Putting the symbols on their own layer and separate from Annotation(en) is a brilliant idea, that makes translating it a lot easier since someone can just create a Annotation(other language) layer and translate that to match what you already have. I think we should make the Symbols layer part of the template and note it in Project:How to draw a map. Only problem I see with your map is the font. You should install and use Blue Highway [3] or here [4] --(WT-en) NJR_ZA 08:03, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

You are definately right about the scale, I have not really noticed before, but it does look a lot better with thin lines. I'll fix that on the template and add the Symbol layer. Africa (Uganda)

I'm not very familiar with the area, but that does seem to make sense from a travel point of view. Most travelers visiting Uganda will probably do it while visiting East Africa and enter it either from Kenya or Tanzania. The Uganda article already states that it is in East Africa (Though the breadcrumb states it is in Central Africa). There are more IPs he used , but I'm not looking for all of them. He never really got yelled at, but he was criticized, sometimes harshly, because he would create articles for non-destinations and out of several hundred articles I think we kept no more than five(?) We tried for months and months to get him to take the time, breathe, make sure the article he was about to create was actually a real destination. It wasn't. We then tried baby steps like using a template, but that was too complicated. MediaWiki files

Yes, only administrators may edit MediaWiki files. The reason being so because these files are sensitive to site performance and security. Imagine if someone used the MediaWiki:Sitenotice to link to a virus.

Bacon dogs

I'm not sure if it's something that's uniquely LA and thus worth mentioning in the Los Angeles article, but bacon dogs are fairly ubiquitous late at night, especially in Hollywood. Image licensing

Apologies for adding an image released under an incompatible license (Image:373296152 5f5620faf9.jpg). I've had a look at the WT licensing policy, and for future reference would like to confirm. On Flickr, there are six kinds of CC license ([5]). Is it only the top on the list, Attribution 2.0, and the bottom one of these six, Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0, that are compatible with WT licensing. Thanks for your help. Kabul

Hi there! you replaced the following images back in the Kabul article and said to stop removing them. Can you explain why these images are so important? I'm not here for edit war, I'm from Afghanistan and just trying to show images of the more interesting places in the article rather than focusing on the least important things. Darulaman Palace is a fairly popular site for visitors, and the Kabul street food image gives a glimpse of the old town. Replacing them with Kabul City Center images is slightly strange in my opinion. Well, my idea is not trying to project Kabul as being a very modern city, most travellers or most people in the world know that it is the capital of a war-torned country. However, they also need to know or see that it is being rebuilt and changing slowly. I agree the Palace may be fairly popular site for visitors, but it's only for those who are interested in history. I am only suggesting that we add images in the article of places that are already renovated or rebuilt (for the safety of visitors). The street food image would have been fine except for the two people staring at the camera. The best images are those which do not show people staring at the camera, usually you see these types of pictures in National Geographic magazine. When I first saw the image I immediatly thought that it might have been taken in Pakistan but then when I saw the cup of green tea next to the guy selling food, I knew he was Afghan because most Pakistanis drink tea with milk in it. I myelf would not mind buying whatever he is selling, and another thing about this image I don't like being in the article is due to the nature of this business, not being a permanent shop. The stores are fine but street people selling products does not go well in articles, I'm sure you know what I mean, and I'll leave the images for now until we all agree to remove them.--(WT-en) Creative 10:07, 8 September 2007 (EDT)

I understand your intentions, but what we should be doing is presenting the reality of Kabul, not its idea for the future... the Kabul City Center stands out in that city like a sore thumb, and isn't at all representative of Kabul now  :) I would say the same for the street food image... that absolutely represents a large side of Kabul right now. As does the staring people in the background ;) And I assure you it is in Kabul, I took the image myself, and as you imagined, the food he's serving was pretty delicious! What you should keep in mind is that articles here are aimed at several different groups of people... some of the things in them aren't of interest to locals, but are very popular and interesting to foreign visitors. For myself and all of the other foreign travelers I met in Afghanistan, the old area near that food stall was the best part of Kabul. Yes, we all went to the City Center too... but I wouldn't travel to Kabul to see that. It's the real life and the raw reality of it that is fascinating to me and many others. You could also use Los Angeles as an example... I live here, and wouldn't do half of the things listed in the LA articles... they don't interest me as a local... but I understand that they are popular with tourists, and accept that there is going to be a huge difference in the perceived reality of this city between visitors and locals. In Afghanistan, witnessing a more traditional way of life and glimpsing the war-torn side of the country is what draws many of the travelers there, so we should represent that in the articles too, just as we do for India and Pakistan. To Cacahuate, every article, regardless of the location, needs to start with the top places and slowly go down the line. You're right about presenting everything about the places, but we should not be starting with the ghettos and working our way to the better places. These articles are intended for all the people in the world, not just for one particular type of people or groups. For example: If we were to say that Kabul is a very dangerous place for visitors, that would be false because it would not be a dangerous place for the 160 million people from Pakistan, 80 million from Iran, 1.3 billion from China, 1.1 billion from India, 220 million from Indonesia, or other countries. I am trying to present the reality of Kabul, there is not just Kabul City Center but many other similar new places in the city operating already. Majority people who visit would not want to start with eating street foods, unless they were tempted or were starving. I don't know much about Los Angeles but if I saw an image of a hot-dog cart in Philadelphia, for example, selling pretzels then that's fine because that is what Philly is famous for, and Chicago for special hot-dogs, NYC for slices of pizza, etc. I will be searching around to find images of Kabul restaurants that serves Sheesh-kababs and rice, this is what Kabul is famous for. I have no idea what you're talking about here. You are completely wrong with your thoughts about me, I'm not painting a future Kabul, I'm painting Kabul as the way it exists today, I did not put any future ideas or plans of Kabul, I only put images of hotels and places that already exist in the city. Since you uploaded just one picture of Kabul, with the street food, it probably means that you haven't travelled to every part of the city, and you're trying to make us believe that this is how the whole city looks in which you're wrong. When I travel to other cities in the world I usually stay in hotels in the category of Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Hilton, Double Tree, Hamton Inn, etc....eat at restaurants in the category of Outback Steakhouse, T.G.I Friday's, Applebee's, etc....enjoy places like Disney World, Atlantic City, Famous resorts and parks, etc. That's my category and you are allowed to show low-class places to eat or stay in Kabul but as long as the images are taken with quality work. About the street food stalls, you are wrong again...there are not that many street food stalls in Kabul than restaurants, although many of the restaurants are designed for locals only. The street food vendoes only sell snack food, not a complete meal, most people in the city eat at home. I'm not forcing you to believe my writings, you can always check most recent images of Kabul or any other place on Flickr anytime and see what's going on there....recent images of Kabul on flickr. I also want to mention that you've deleted for no reasons the 2005 image showing a view of Kabul (see image above on the right) Votes for deletion/Archive July-Dec 2007 on Wikivoyage share. I'm so not interested in turning this into a heated argument, and please don't take it personally. I think you've made valuable contributions to Afghan articles, and I thank you for that. I'm only concerned with one part of your recent changes to Kabul, and that is, through your edits, it seems you were deleting images of the "old" Kabul (the street food and the shah m books images) and replacing with the glitziest places in the city (city center, serena). For the record, I spent plenty of time in the City Center, and ate everywhere from the street food stalls, kabob restaurants and the resold US military meals up to the buffet at the Serena and restaurants like L'Atmosphere, so no, my view of the city is in no way limited. I've traveled extensively, have seen a lot of other cities to compare Kabul too, and I assure you, the few places that have set up shop to cater to foreigners and to aid workers are far from summing up Kabul. If you don't agree that's fine, my word isn't golden... All I ask is, that if you're simply adding information from your perspective, as you say, that you don't delete other perspectives in the process. Your perspective seems to be that of a business traveler, but don't forget the travelers/backpackers too... those groups have very different interests a lot of the time, and we should be catering to both ends of the spectrum and everything in between. If you look back into the history of the Kabul article, you'll find that I've contributed to both.

Hindi WT

A wikipedian (Wolf) wanted to know whether विकिट्रैवल should be replaced by a hindi word. As far as I know, most of the language versions stick with "wikivoyage" (except Jap.). His intial suggestions were

• विकियात्रा
• विकिवभ्रमण

Personally, I'm noe comfortable with either of these. "यात्रा" means "journey", it does not refer to "travel" per se. And भ्रमण is way too Sanskritized. If we need a Hindi name, I'd go for विकिपर्यटन

Re: Chittagong

As I understand things, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, while Wikivoyages is a travel guide. I have created separate articles for Bandarban on both projects, and they carry very different types of information (though, both are in bad shapes). You see, a sentence like "Famous for its XX, the YY is one of the most exciting places to visit in ZZ" may be deemed as pure advertisement in Wikipedia, while making suitable material for Wikitravles. It is all because of the different nature of the projects. One projects burden can always be another projects delight. Like Wikipedia has explicit policy aganist original research, while Wikivoyages would accept nothing but original research. I am sure Wikivoyages would not be too delighted to have details of geological structures ad clay formations like I am putting into another place article in Wikipedia. Vandalism policy?

I don't know about you folks (I'm sending the same message to several), but I for one am getting sick and tired of the intentional vandalism that's going on here. I am trying to start a discussion on Project:Community policies as to whether something more forceful needs to be in place to deal with it. Historically, we have bent far over backwards to avoid punitive action against vandals and have simply gone in and cleaned up the messes they create. However, the frequency of vandalism is growing, and I am not convinced that we are doing Wikivoyage a service by tolerating it. This said, I'm not at all sure what the "right" response is.

Why was my 'Safety' contribution for St. Martin's Isd. Bangladesh deleted?

Not even 2 days ago I put some safety tips in the aformentioned section. I read the rules. I wrote professionally. I have been to this place. I wrote nothing insulting or vulger. It's okay for the person to post that you can get alcohol if you ask for it, but a warning on legalities gets deleted...really. If this pedia is to be of any use to any sincere traveler, those safety concerns I spent an hour carefull adding, would be some of the most important information....especially for non Bangladeshi people. If you check the internet, or even a travel agency, they don't have much to offer on this trek. My contribution comes from my experience and stories that others who have been there have shared with me. What's the problem?

Only things that are specific to Saint Martin's Island should be in that article... if they apply to the whole country then the info should be in the Bangladesh article (bottled water, dressing conservatively, etc). Advising to take a guided tour wasn't necessary... that's a personal choice, and very few non-Bangladeshis, in my opinion, would opt for that. I also removed the line about foreigners having no choice but to pay double than locals... sometimes, yes... but just because someone asks doesn't mean you have to pay it (and I'd argue strongly that you shouldn't pay it)... better to advise people on how to negotiate... and even then, that applies to the whole country once again, so would be said at Bangladesh. You also said to avoid staying in Teknaf, but didn't say why... it's certainly not paradise, but I spent the night there and had an ok time. Not riding ferries in storms - was that specific to the SMI area? I figured you were probably talking about the whole country once again, but also thought that it kinda a random statement... but can you elaborate more on that? Anyhoo, how did you like the island? Teknaf is notorious for human trafficking and pickpocketing. If you are a lone non Asian woman, which when you see female 'foreigners', that's what they most often are, can you honestly suggest she stay in Teknaf overnight alone? Look, I'm not out to down Bangladesh. St. Martin's is like a baby to me. I know you don't want to get me started on environmental stuff and contamination of the 'indiginous' islanders...like there's any saving it at this point. My point is, if you are not of 'general' South Asian looks..how can I say this... if you are Anglo looking, or dark skinned, but not Asian, you will be forced to pay double for stuff, if not just close to it. You can try going to 20 different vendors (not that there's space enough for much more on island), but it's like they all have a conspiracy...a set low price specifically for 'American' looking people. When I visit Bangladesh, I am there with my family. I don't stay in a hotel, don't have a generator, know the meaning of 'current neye'. I am not Asian or Bangladeshi. Donning a full borqua, speeking Bangla (I am sure with quite an accent), out shopping with my spouse or inlaws, we all become subject to high haggling because of me. They see my eyes and my hight, and they know. So, just imagine what all those backpackers get that go over there to Narikel Jinjera. Usually backpackers are making pit stops and have quite a ration for funds, so imagine if you read the prices, and next you end up spending double for every life sustaning need you have, not too mention the fun stuff. I advise a travel agent for 'foreigners' because it's a tough trip, and cosidering the conversion rate, what's the big deal. It takes a ton of stress out of it, you still get all of the exposure to the day to day stuff, with just a speck of security. You can't beat someone actually understanding what's being blasted on a bull horn carried on a rickshaw, and avoiding getting stuck at the bus station/stop, or not finding a ride due to an instant hartal. I can't see how you could remove that stuff from 'safety'. If it applies to Bangladesh, well St. Martin's isn't in Burma, now is it? The tides are changing in St. Martin. It's becoming a place where, pretty soon, you'll see non Desi's bringing their families...if it survives. I love that island. I obsess over it. I know more about it than my Bangladeshi side. I think there should be alot more on environmental awareness, also...like if someone should try to sell you a baby turtle, a chunk of coral to refuse it. Or how there was all of this international funding from the turtle people (can't recall the organization's name, but just google ridley turtle st. martins)..how the turtle sanctuary is at a standstill..how there has been next to nothing on the lines of training the original islanders about eco tourism. Now the water is so full of sewage that dead turtles, hatchlings, dolphins and fish are washing up dead on the beaches. But it's funny that no one knows why. And about the ferries.. talk to the locals. The 'captains' of the ferries overload the boats, ride even during storm and high surf warnings. Yes this applies to Bangladesh, yes you MUST take a ferry to get to Narikel Jinjera. Research ferry loss. It is astounding. My message is go to Narikel Jinjera, but tread lightly, and don't buy natural trinkets. Smell the fresh salty air mixed with lovely curry odor. See the sunlight twinkling through the palms. And when you get home, write to Bangladesh's parks department about what needs to be done, so the island will still be there for your kids to see. Did you know that it was home to some indiginous gastropods and corals only found on that island? Was. Btw, you didn't just remove lines. You obliterated the whole safety section, disected a few and put them in a new area. Which considering how much off island people traffice the island gets now, it should be treated like the mainland. Women's modesty is a safety rule. When men don't do it, they just get laughed at. Women risk almost deffinite harrasment and occasional assalt. Maybe in Dhaka a girl could get away with it, but not on the island. There's a lot of 'grabbing' in past and present.

Yeah, I took that travel plan down to keep my hopes from getting up. If I do get there my base will now be Delhi, rather than Mumbai (I'm not sure if that's a plus or a negative), and some arcane politicking might prevent me from going altogether now. Gay travel

Actually, I added the VFD, not the vandal. My reasoning was that if we follow the process rigorously, (1) the clown might see how out of bounds he is (although I doubt it), and (2) we'll be able to speedy-keep it the next time he makes a fuss, while still being completely within our procedures and policies.

Incidentally, I just added something to the policy talk page expanding on the vandalism question. Your opinion on that would be appreciated; Nick's analysis looks right to me.
