I don't think Trav is an attention-seeker so much as he's attention-deficient. I don't understand

I seem to have this deep rooted fear of copyvios. Is there anyway you could explain to me what exactly doesn't violate WikiTravel copyright policies? What I'm really confused about is which images we can use if an image is labeled with (a) disclaimer(s) that reads something like the one that is listed here. Basically, in that example the author says "you can make use of my work under either the terms of the GFDL license or the terms of the CC-SA license" and it is up to whoever uses it to decide which one to pick. This is called "dual-licensing" since the author is giving you a choice of two licenses.

Everything uploaded to Wikivoyage must be licensable with CC-SA -- though we have no objection to hosting stuff that is dual or multi-licensed as long as at least one of the licenses is CC-SA.

So for the image you cited, it's fine to uploaded it to Wikivoyage since it is CC-SA. For attributions, you should add a weblink to the original on commons from the Wikivoyage copy of the image. -- (WT-en) Colin 15:29, 3 April 2006 (EDT)

Thanks for the comments. The "substance" part is not a problem -- I've got a pretty good handle on that, although it would be good if someone more familiar with the night spots (not a strength of either Santa Fe or myself) would expand the "Drink" section. I had intentionally left the "musical group" section somewhat terse, as it's a sub-subdivision and the article is already quite long for a city of 60,000. Of course, Santa Fe isn't just any city of 60,000... Were you the one who was double checking most of Shalom Alechem's contributions? If so I we may want to look into this image which was uploaded to Shared [2]. The image was uploaded by DerFussi, but Shalom Alechem had uploaded it to commons where it was taken from and uploaded to Shared. Working on shared

Colin, are you able to edit "project pages"? I'm working on copying and pasting info from en onto the Shared site to help users figure out their way around the site. The pic was taken off a government web site, and since all government media are considered public (unless otherwise noted), it's indeed public domain. As someone else noted befored, there's no way to classify government-issued pictures that do not come from the US in the licensing options when choosing, that should be fixed.

Parks

On a total side-note to the Buses in Israel discussion, I noticed your comment about parks and stuff for kids. Strangely enough, I've been thinking more about travel with kids over the last 8.5 months ;-)... Anyway, I know the Project:Where you can stick it says parks go under "See", where do you think the best place is for "playgrounds" and other kid-resources? Of course, the general stuff should be under See/Do, but I'm trying to think about stuff that might go under 'Cope'.... and what about dining and hotel specific info? I'm thinking about things like trying to find a high chair in Thailand and taking public transportation with a baby (ie in the US you have to have a carseat even in a Taxi). Question

Well, it's basically a script that surfs to the websites of some major hotel chains, and parses their web pages for information about hotels in the US. It then emits some wiki-formatted text that can be stuck into the Sleep section of many US cities. The script takes a week or two to run in order to be gentle to the hotels' websites. I fixed up and reran the script a couple of weeks ago. So the end result is I have a really interesting database sitting on my computer, but no automatic way of making it upload.

Check out (WT-en) Ohio which has 299 Ohio hotels for you. I would encourage you to surf to each hotel as you add it and make sure it looks roughly correct. I'd also encourage you not to reformat the entries -- unless you just have to. My idea is that I save each copy of the hotel formatting that I've uploaded. Future versions of the script should be able to automatically recognize old hotelmaker entries and replace them with updated ones -- but this will only work if the old version is unmodified. -- (WT-en) Colin 00:17, 27 June 2006 (EDT)

That's great. Just added a bunch of listings to various cities. One thing I did catch and was wondering about is - does your script scrape the websites of Hyatt, Starwood (Westin, Sheraton), Hilton, Accor (Sofitel, Red Roof Inn), Loews, or Radisson? In the long run, I want the script to scrape all available hotels that have nontrivial numbers of locations. Colin: fantastic work with the hotel listings; they look really really good. One thing: the fax part is supposed to be in parens, which isn't a big deal but might trip up a processor sticking too close to the Project:Accommodation listings format.

Attribution issues

Thanks for your note on wikia about license issues. Wikivoyage is great - no apparent license issues I know of. My concern is with Wikicars.org, which is a sister site. They have taken content from Wikipedia at BMW and every other car page, and appears to be trying to avoid providing attribution. I told Evan about it already, so I am assuming someone at Internet Brands will do the right thing. Gil

As it happens, I have some experience with diplomacy -- and I mean real, national-level diplomacy in which I have had to write documents to satisfy cabinet-level people in two countries that were disagreeing with each other. In such things, one learns to write in a way that allows progress. Is "Stalinist dictatorship" a more realistic view of the way DPRK works than "single-party Socialist republic"? Absolutely, and I say that as one who makes a living partly by studying that country. But there are -- will need to be -- abundant places in the text to make it clear that the one is shorthand for the other. We need to do something that allows the contributors to quit ****ing around and get on with that important stuff, namely what the traveler needs. I don't have a dog in the political fight, but we need to craft some language that gets beyond the posturing egos and on to writing actual content. Since it's a short list of the most useful lines with the significant destinations associated with each line, it seems to me that it is helpful and useful. So I'd keep it. Bentonville Hotel Delete

The hotel you deleted from Bentonville, should likely stay. Rogers and Bentonville border each other and I am sure the only reason that hotel exists is because of Bentonville and WalMart. Fax numbers in hotelmaker

Colin: the fax numbers in your hotelmaker stuff (which rocks, by the way) doesn't follow the Project:accommodation listings format. It'd probably save some time if you make it use the standard format (I think (''[F|f]ax: ...'') is the right way to do it). --(WT-en) Evan 16:41, 13 September 2006 (EDT)

Long term I've saved away copies of all previously-generated hotelmaker output that was used on the site. My plan is to write a script which is able to go through US articles and replace all previous-generation output with new-generation output. Rather than do this multiple times.... I'd like to see the <sleep> tags fully implemented so that the appearance of the entries is reconfigurable on a sitewide basis.

By the way... do any hotels have referrer programs? I see no reason why the wikivoyage website couldn't transmute the <sleep> urls to use a referrer program link in order to generate revenue to offset the hosting costs. But only if referrer programs exist.

Lastly, I should probably provide you with a list of metadata that is currently being thrown away by hotelmaker because there isn't a good place to slot it into the listing. For example, Motel6 has latidude/longitude available, and it'd be nice if I could slot it into some param of the <sleep> tag. Protection

Just FYI, the USA page didn't get protected; the threat of protecting it seems to have accomplished the desired goal. (Incidentally, I'm not the only admin who would have done so had the bickering continued.)

In my opinion this is exactly the kind of situation that the Project:Protected page policy language on edit wars is for. There had been multiple edits and reverts covering exactly the same contentious language, generating nothing except longer and longer "summaries" of inflexible positions that were making it hard to follow the other stuff going on on the "Recent Changes" page. A six-hour cooling-off period for discussion/reflection seems to me like the right response, and I know that I'm not alone in that feeling. Are you sure about your statement about foreign passports and driver's licenses as acceptable IDs for alcohol in California? I have purchased alcohol in California several times with a foreign passport or license. Apart from a curious look and sometimes a difficulty in finding the birth date, I was never refused service. Hello, just giving a heads-up in case you read this. You changed the isin for Baker and Barstow to Mojave Desert. We've had a small discussion about whether Mojave Desert should be a subregion of Desert (California) - I think it should, we created it as such - but I'm not sure about moving the cities there. Probably okayfine, but see subdividing section on Talk:Desert (California). Writing about Stadiums

Hey Colin! Hmm, having looked through Project:What is an article? I still think the stadium stuff can stay. Old Trafford/Wembley are both massive attractions, and if we were to put their information into the city articles it would make those city articles very long. There's attractions in their own right, really: indeed, the rule page points to Disneyland an one example of an attraction with its own page. I reckon important stadiums also fit into that category. Hotelmakerbot

Nice job on the bot! I don't know if there's an official policy on the issue or if you have a preference, but when using listing tags I've tried to include empty attributes such as price="" in the hopes that users who have that information will eventually fill it in. At the moment it looks like the bot leaves empty attributes out. The logic is the same idea as including template sections in articles even if there is no data for that section. Sorry, didn't mean to make extra work for you, but figured it would be easier to make a suggestion now rather than in a week. As to the default tags, the full list for "sleep" is:

• name
• alt
• address
• directions
• phone
• email
• fax
• url
• hours
• price
• geo
• tags

Of those, only "geo" and "tags" look optional to me, and it probably wouldn't even hurt to include those as well, but I don't feel strongly about it. Project:Listings uses "hours" as the field for check-in and check-out, but since that varies greatly by hotel, time of year, clerk at the desk, etc. I don't think we'd be any worse off if that attribute was left out. -- (WT-en) Ryan 00:44, 17 November 2006 (EST)

So, on Project:Listings, I've started noting which I think are "recommended" and which are optional. Here, I mean that if the listing doesn't have that info, I don't think the listing's done. I think "alt" is going to be used rarely for English-speaking countries -- only when the hotel has a nickname ("The Old Red Hotel" or something). "Directions" is nice but again will be the exception rather than the rule, and "fax", "url" and "email" are definitely not required. I don't even think checkin-checkout info is absolutely necessary to have, unless the hotel has some extremely strange times that don't correspond to rough standards of late afternoon and midday, respectively. Illinois & spanish - I hope my rollback didn't seem obnoxious

Hi Colin, You've probably noticed by now that I rolled back your rollback of Illinois from the list of large-spanish-language-presence states. I hope you don't find the roll-roll-back insulting.

I do think it's reasonable to include Illinois in the list because of the large Spanish-speaking population in Chicago, especially since it's not commonly known. It's not obnoxious at all. When I last was in Chicago and Champaign five years ago, I never happened to hear anyone speak Spanish. That's never happened to me in LA. I understand Miami swings even more to Spanish. It just kinda seems to me the whole country has varying influence of the Spanish-speaking immigrants (and that should probably be noted in the article) and I didn't want to wander down the slippery slope of "Salt Lake City has Spanish speaking neighborhoods too". I restored Zion National Par page created in an attempt to vandalize, because I think it could be potentially useful. I occassionally hit enter one letter too soon and get taken to wrong pages or to the search page. I have no real opinion. Frankly we can leave the page vandalized for an hour -- unlike the anon editor we will always be here to change it back. Usually anon vandals who are angry give up by now, so this guy is remarkably persistent so it may be worth trying another route (and I'm still hoping he talks to us on Talk:Paris).
