Make sure you are sitting down...
edit....when you read this. That Ubud won the award for top city in Asia is just about believable, but one hell of an achievement nonetheless. But this? If you take the top scores of all cities in the world, Ubud is fifth! I am stunned. Bali sadly lost (just) its perennial top island spot to The Maldives. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:50, 8 February 2010 (EST)

Naming conventions
editThere's a lengthy discussion at Project:Naming conventions#Latin Characters, and a point was raised about why Vietnamese is an exception to the "use the Latin alphabet including accents/diacritics" rule. Since you wrote Project:Romanization#Vietnamese you would seem to be the expert on the matter, so can you add your thoughts? Thanks! -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 22:51, 16 February 2010 (EST)

Enabling the Add Listing feature
editHi there. I've been trying to get the listing form editor working for pt:. I added the edit tools successfully and I've translated the labels for the listings editor and they show up fine in Portuguese when you access it from the edit button of a listing already in template format (example: pt:Viana do Castelo#Coma, but there is no section button to add a listing. Do you know how to enable that? (WT-en) Texugo 01:19, 7 September 2010 (EDT)

Advice requested: Jeju page restructuring
editHey mate, last week I gave the Jeju page a roadtest -- without a car -- and found it just horrendously difficult to use. Ended up relying on a fistful of soulless brochures and browsing over odds and ends of Jeju Life on my phone. Sure, theres info missing and lacking in places, but that stuff comes with time. My concern was that some of the info actually there was lain out in such a jumbled and confused manner that I couldn't use all of what was there. Basic navigation info proved confusing and I think that's related to the article structure. I've thought about this a bit and come up with what I feel is a solution, albeit a bit unorthodox so I want a second opinion. A cross between splitting the article and following a Huge City template-esque structure. As you seem to have a fairly large interest in the South Korean articles I figured you'd be a good one to ask. I've detailed the proposal and the rationale behind it on the Talk page and I'm quite willing to play around with it myself whilst adding bits and bobs I've picked up. If you get a moment, could you please have a quick read and throw me some feedback or an opinion?
Also, any advice (or links to advice) on making consistent "Wikivoyage-style" maps would be greatly appreciated as I can see a couple of articles begging for them. Cheers!
PS: Keep an eye out for snakes hey! I was living in Batchelor down beside Litchfield only a few years back for a few months. 4m python outside my door one night coming back from the pub. Inappropriate discussion
editAs should be obvious, especially in this case, fork discussions are not appropriate at WT. I have removed your two topics, as they amount to a backdoor method of undermining this community.--(WT-en) IBobi 16:14, 2 July 2012 (EDT)
- There is no such thing as an "inappropriate discussion" on Wikivoyage: the previous Wikivoyage fork has been discussed here extensively, and the future fork will be discussed here as well, like it or not. Reverting Talk pages is considered vandalism, and your actions will be treated as censorship. You're in a hole already, stop digging it deeper. (WT-en) jpatokal 19:57, 2 July 2012 (EDT)
- I certainly disagree that an action that can be taken by any Wikivoyageer (and was reverted in minutes) could be considered "censorship," even though I am an IB employee; I am also a WTer, and I used no tools or methods that are not available to even the most anonymous of editors. In addition, there is support in the community for the idea that fork talk is inappropriate, which is what led to my action. Completely within the rules of this project.
- Just the same, as you have seen, at least 3 WTers have raised an issue with your discussion, and more specifically your links to the fork talk on WM. I see no support for discussing it on WT and two other admins asking for the links to be removed, so it's up to you, but you may consider removing the link to fall in line with community thinking on this. Thanks for listening.--(WT-en) IBobi 17:13, 10 July 2012 (EDT)
- You've now inappropriately posted two links to the competing travel fork discussion and a link to your personal blog. Please remove these three external links as they directly contravene the policy against external links and competing travel sites on WT.--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 13:27, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- Make my day → Project:User ban nominations. (WT-en) jpatokal 20:56, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- The fork discussion thing is obviously unresolved and has no clear policy, while the external links policy ban on links to blogs applies only to content pages, not discussion pages. (WT-en) texugo 12:33, 13 July 2012 (EDT)

Hi Jani, I have again reverted your changes to the fi: sitenotice. Please do not use the sitenotice feature to promote or discuss a fork of Wikivoyage. You may see the discussion in the Pub for my reasons, of which I believe you are already aware. Thank you, --(WT-en) IBobi talk email 14:10, 23 July 2012 (EDT)
- Wikivoyage language versions are independent, and 100% of the admins on the Finnish version -- that would be me and Trsqr -- are in favor of both the fork and sitenotice. So, vedä vittu päähän ja suksi suohon. (WT-en) jpatokal 09:29, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
- This is a site issue, not a project issue. The host is responsible for the site, and has decided that the sitenotice is not to be used for that purpose and that purpose only. I've changed it back. It's an unique situation, and I appreciate your cooperation. Thanks, Jani.--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 14:12, 24 July 2012 (EDT)

- Actually I'm doing both. I am not a technician, merely a tech liaison. As you can clearly see, if you're following the discussions, I and our tech department have been working on these issues diligently since last week, already having resolved one with a very significant site software upgrade to 1.17.5. We're still working on the deletion issue. Sometimes things take time. I'd appreciate your staying on the constructive side of this site; otherwise perhaps you'd care to leave? We'd prefer that you stay, Jan, but there is no need for hostility or for challenging those who are seeking to make this site run as well as it can.--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 18:02, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
- Ibobi: I'm around here for more than six years on a voluntary basis and worked pretty hard over these years to make Wikivoyage a good page. IB didn't care about us for years. For you its just a job where you preffered to have a lazy weekend instead of working for Wikivoyage and clearing a major mistake. You write: "Sometimes things take time" I wonder if you would have waited with the update over the weekend if the blog of your mother would experience technical issues. I don't want to raise the emotions further and i will stay around and speak out the truth that you/IB does a minimal effort to keep Wikivoyage running. I have not come across anyone so far who supports your position that you/IB "make this site run as well as it can". I didn't challenge you, it's your/IBs inactivity that's appaling.(WT-en) Jc8136 03:30, 25 July 2012 (EDT)

Hi, Jc, As I said, we'd prefer that you stay. But accusing IB technicians of being lazy based on absolutely no information other than that it took some time to fix a security hole built into the MW software that we just upgraded is irresponsible and unfair. There are a lot of emotions and accusations being bandied about lately due to the ongoing fork discussion; but that does not affect our duties as hosts of this site. I simply ask that we be given credit for the work that we are doing and have been doing for some time now, rather than blaming everything on past troubles. This is and has been an earnest effort, and I'm sorry if you can't see that. Hopefully it will become more apparent in time. Meanwhile, thank you for your contributions as always. If you have further comments on this or other issues that have nothing to do with Jani's page, I suggest we discuss them at my page or yours. Thank you,--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 14:00, 25 July 2012 (EDT)
Files on http://en.wikivoyage-old.org
editHi.
You have uploaded a lot of files on http://en.wikivoyage-old.org. I asume it is you that is Jpatokal there and is the uploader of the files in http://en.wikivoyage-old.org/wiki/Category:Files_uploaded_by_Jpatokal.
If yes could you perhaps help checking the files? Either check one by one and add a source and a license (source could be "by jpatokal" like on many photos). Or if you are sure you are the photographer unless there is a statement saying otherwise just add a notice on top of http://en.wikivoyage-old.org/wiki/Category:Files_uploaded_by_Jpatokal saying "All these are taken by me, Jpatokal, unless otherwise noted" or something like that. And we also need a license. You could perhaps also leave a note same place saying "All my files are licensed cc-by-sa-3.0 unless another license is mentioned.". If you do that I can add a license with my bot and move the files to Commons.
Thank you.--MGA73 (talk) 18:16, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll have a look shortly. Perhaps you could check http://wts.wikivoyage-old.org/wiki/Category:Files_uploaded_by_Jpatokal ? There is only a few files left and on some of them there is a name that does not look like your name. If you have them from somewhere perhaps you could add a link or a small text explaining who the author is? --MGA73 (talk) 19:42, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Most of the files in en.wikivoyage-old.org has now been fixed. The rest needs to be checked one by one. Perhaps you could have a look when you have a free moment. --MGA73 (talk) 21:40, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Brilliant, thanks! So for the rest:
- File:Mustamakkara Tapola.JPG, File:TirtaEmpul HotSpring.JPG, File:GrandBahama ConchPeasRice.JPG are by friends or relatives traveling with me and I can certify that they're CC by-sa 3.0.
- Hanover cityhall crop.jpg, Sibelius Monument in Helsinki.JPG, Thailand Ayutthaya Wat Phra Si Sanphet.jpg, File:KaoSoiChiangMai.jpg are by random people but are all PD/CC, the sources are linked from the descriptions.
- The rest are all mine, although I'm not sure about the exact licensing of the OSM screenshots. (They're definitely free, just not quite sure what flavor of license...)
- Let me know if there's something I need to do to make your bot happy. Jpatokal (talk) 09:57, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi! I've been busy so I have not been looking into http://wts.wikivoyage-old.org/wiki/Category:Files_uploaded_by_Jpatokal for a long time. But I just copied most of the files to Commons so there is not many left. Regarding the files taken by friends/relatives the best would be a mail to OTRS. And the files from other sources should have a working link if possible and the license should be mentioned on the source. --MGA73 (talk) 20:37, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I also had a look at http://en.wikivoyage-old.org/wiki/Category:Files_uploaded_by_Jpatokal and the files need a license or a working link. Perhaps you could check and fix? If the files are no longer used you could also choose to delete them. --MGA73 (talk) 20:48, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
