Hi Peter,

I hope you are fine. The nomination for user cardboardbird is running for a month and i think he is ripe for the mob ;-) Would you give him the tools? I'm very busy in my real life at the moment, so it would be handy to have additional hands... Thanks and best regards, (WT-en) jan 10:28, 5 January 2011 (EST)

Hmm, actually I already have a week ago! --Peter Talk 11:39, 5 January 2011 (EST)

server error edit

Could you - or someone administering mediawiki - look into this error? It seems the software have some serious problems with accents in filenames.

Thanks. --(WT-en) grin 17:46, 9 January 2011 (EST)

Yes, the software does have serious problems with such characters. Please avoid them; there's nothing we, as admins, can do about it. See, for example, wts:WtTech:Image thumbnail not shown if filename contains special characters. (WT-en) LtPowers 11:38, 12 January 2011 (EST)

This is not the mediawiki, this is the local filesystem on the server. And yes, not wikiadmins but serveradmins can and should fix that. But I don't know them, maybe you do. --(WT-en) grin 18:52, 20 January 2011 (EST)

Corrections to Far Southeast Side Travel Guide & Map. edit

Hello! A very good guide! However, in the drink section you refer to the "Frank Loyd Wright-style golf course club house off of 111th street just before Route 57" and I assume you mean 94, not 57.

The map makes a similar error, where, in the Pullman Historic District inset map, 94 is labeled as 57. It is correctly labeled 94 on the outset map.

Sincerely, Ben from Hammond

p.s. Just noticed, also on the map, the South Shore station is misspelled Hegewische instead of Hegewisch. Oh and in the Sleep Legend, there are two #2, instead of #3. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) 76.192.180.150 (talkcontribs)

Whoops! Yes, those are all silly goofs on my part, that went unnoticed for far too long. I'll fix these up. --Peter Talk 13:19, 12 January 2011 (EST)
Great work on Hammond, by the way. I always had a good time, usually driving through and making a quick stop at a good eatery. It's just a shame that we can't put Phil Schmidt's in there! --Peter Talk 13:45, 12 January 2011 (EST)

policy on tours edit

Hi Peter. Happy New Year! User:(WT-en) Scagnoz has just uploaded plugs for Chianti Tours on about ten pages in the Chianti area Siena deleted by me, Florence, Radda, Greve, Panzano, etc. etc.. I don't find the Policy on Tours clear enough to really delete all of these; in theory you could do it yourself assuming Chianti Tours does not have access to vineyards that are not open to the general public. Please advise. And if I delete Chianti Tours listing there are other listings that will have to be deleted, too. In some cases leaving nothing on the pages! Thanks (WT-en) Shep 12:57, 18 January 2011 (EST)

Wrh2 has now deleted them all but there are about 20 such companies listed under Cape Winelands so should we not be consistent? (WT-en) Shep 14:47, 19 January 2011 (EST)
See User talk:(WT-en) Scagnoz. The user copied the same text to 11 different articles. Wine tours are not necessarily a violation of the Tour policy if they offer a value-add (generally, safe transportation for drunks), but copying the same text to multiple articles is a blatant abuse of Wikivoyage. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 15:07, 19 January 2011 (EST)
Point taken. Perhaps we could move all the wine tour listings to Chianti? (WT-en) Shep 15:18, 19 January 2011 (EST)

Hi Peter,

we are a bit short of nominees for DotM/OtbP. I have started to improve Frankfurt as the reasons for the slush pile have been mainly xl and formatting. I already asked G-T if he would do a map for Frankfurt but if you have any other contestants, then they would be more than welcome. Thank you and have a nice weekend, (WT-en) jan 10:45, 18 February 2011 (EST)

Hi Peter, I worked on Frankfurt to get it ready for DotM. Globe-trotter is at the moment AWOL so would you mind to have a look what's missing. I kick in a quick and dirty map for downtown but feel free if you have a better map to simply ignore it. Regards,

Yakutsk edit

Hello! I have read some of your contributions to the wiki travel page regarding Yakutsk, which is a very well done page and thank you for helping, and had a couple questions for you. I am interested in potentially living in Yakutsk and am the beginning stages of figuring out how to find work before I arrive. I was just wondering if you saw any places offering to teach English there? Is there much, if any, potential for work as an ex-pat there? How many international folks were there in Yakutsk during the summer? I lived through a Mongolian winter, so I am familiar with the cold, though obviously Yakutsk is colder than almost anywhere in the world. According to Lonely Planet finding work in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is nearly impossible, but I found multiple job offers as an English teacher in just two weeks. I wonder if Yakutsk is of a potentially similar situation. I'm looking to move there as soon as this fall, but probably later, the summer of 2012.

I thought you might have some information and anything, however small, would be of a great help to me. I'm a qualified English teacher with experience looking to live in the winter northlands for a while. I've been dog sledding a number of times, love it, and want more of it. Thanks again for the contributions online and thanks for any potential help!

Best regards, Alex Miller

Deletion on "Eat" section of "Siberia" page edit

Hi, Peter. I realize the deletion wasn't explained, but the passage that was deleted was a joke. Bak Kut Teh, Garlic Naan, and Hainanese Chicken Rice are common Malaysian foodstuffs, not Siberian dishes. Therefore, I patrolled the redeletion of that joke.

Unused template edit

Hey there! Can Template:Accent be deleted? (WT-en) texugo 09:36, 17 April 2011 (EDT)

It's actually of use, despite appearing to not be in use, since it is only used via the {{subst:accent}} formula. This is useful for adding accent marks to characters in non-Latin alphabets (Russian is what it's most often used for). --Peter Talk 18:54, 1 June 2011 (EDT)
Just out of curiosity, what does substituting a blank template do for us? (WT-en) texugo 02:00, 2 June 2011 (EDT)
While the content is extremely small, the template isn't blank. It adds an accent to anything: @́ %́ ฿́ ы́ --Peter Talk 06:11, 2 June 2011 (EDT)
I gotta admit, I thought it was empty, too, but now I see the single character within. I'm not sure how it works, but I guess it does! (WT-en) LtPowers 19:28, 2 June 2011 (EDT)
As far as I'm concerned it works via "copying from Wikipedia." But template magic is far beyond my realm of understanding! --Peter Talk 19:40, 2 June 2011 (EDT)

Thanks for the feedback Peter. I have a little more to put into the article for it to be as complete as possible for its likely OtBP feature. Staraya edit

Why in the world did you slush Staraya's starnom? Only Claus expressed any significant objection, and promotion certainly doesn't require unanimity. (WT-en) LtPowers 16:18, 20 June 2011 (EDT)

That was some ill-advised foul-mood editing. If, hypothetically speaking, someone were to remove my last comment and undo my slushing, I would not object ;) --Peter Talk 12:40, 21 June 2011 (EDT)
Well, I guess I'll excise the silly bit myself. To explain, though, I have a tendency to get bogged down and sidetracked by the endless, intractable debates over trifles here, and I've made it a goal not to from here on out. (I actually think we'd benefit for a mechanism such as that goofy rock, paper, scissors method to resolve unimportant disputes where people have staked out conflicting positions.) I'm trying to focus on a) creating more original content and b) helping new users figure out how to do the same. Star nominations are something I enjoy, because they feel like a satisfying reward for hard work, but if they devolve into what I am trying to avoid, then I think I probably should leave them alone. --Peter Talk 14:18, 22 June 2011 (EDT)
Yeah, sorry about that; I wasn't sure how much to excise, and our talk page policy specifically advises against it. I should have let you know, though. (WT-en) LtPowers 17:07, 22 June 2011 (EDT)

Talon or прикуп edit

Peter, прикуп word came from Preference card game (преферанс in Russian). These are two cards which are hidden from players and which go to the whisting player finally. Often the success of his game directly depends on those two cards. That is why this saying appeared in Russia - living in Sochi is associated with luck, but with mostly accidential luck. My translator offers 3 options for прикуп: talon, widow, and widdie. Talon seems to me the most monosemantic word of those 3. Do you know other options? Rgds, Andrey

time formats revisited edit

Given your interest in the time formats discussion and/or the star nomination that was almost sidelined over this matter, I thought I should let you know I've reopened the discussion. Hopefully (unlikely perhaps, but hopefully) we can reach a more definitive conclusion on this matter. PerryPlanet Talk 00:44, 23 June 2011 (EDT)

New Orleans districts edit

Hi. Thanks very much for all your work. I was about to make some detailed suggestions and request for comment here on your talk page, but on consideration I decided to put it on the New Orleans talk page in case anyone else cares to chime in; Talk:New_Orleans#Districts_yet_again. Best wishes, (WT-en) Infrogmation 01:16, 27 June 2011 (EDT)

I wanted to give you some more feed back on my perspective on useful New Orleans districts boundaries, since you've been doing great work. I especially appreciate the maps, since that's something I've felt was needed, but didn't know how to do myself.

I would have been much more aggressive in creating district articles if I'd known you'd be creating maps to include every bit of the city with no "grey areas" not included. Since that's what we're doing, I wish to make suggestions:

1) The split off of a Gentilly article I've already mentioned. Again, I think extending it to the lake is best, everything between Bayou St. John and the Industrial Canal. I've resisted moving the UNO etc to the Gentilly article until a new map is ready, but can do so before if you prefer.

2) Having the Bienville Projects on Basin Street as part of "Mid-City" is one of the more obviously absurd things in the present configuration. I suggest adding the square between Canal, I-10, the French Quarter, and Treme to Treme. I'll mention it is not technically Treme, but it is much closer than Mid-City. The one thing of interest to some I can think of off hand is the three remaining buildings from Storyville. Since they're in a dangerous area next to a housing project I'll advise an abundance of caution, but since they're something the hearty few history buffs/urban explorers insist on seeing if they can, IMO better to list them.

3) Split off an "Audubon and University District" article from Uptown, including Audubon Zoo & Park, Tulane & Loyola Universities, and the area right around them. This is something I had in mind doing eventually way back before Katrina. Since we're about to "redraw the map", how about we do this too at the same time? I can knock out the "Audubon and University District" article pretty quickly any time I have a couple hours of free time. In addition to the material now in "Uptown", there are a number of restaurants and shops around the park and universities to add. I'd extend the area back to include the cluster of businesses around Calhoun & Miro, just across Claiborne from the back side of Tulane. (I see you've already discovered one of them, "Naked Pizza". One of a couple there worth mentioning, but don't belong in "Mid-City".) I'd suggest the boundaries include the Park & Universities and area around them with the following boundaries: From the Mississippi River to Lowerline Street (BTW, I applaud your awareness of subtleties in putting the border of Carrollton there rather than on Broadway!), back on Lowerline to Claiborne Avenue; continuing back on Broadway to Fontainebleau. Fontainebleau to State, then riverwards to Claiborne. Claiborne to the River along Calhoun Street.

I think that will result in a good solid districts division that should hold us for some time. (I don't think there's anywhere near enough reason to create a Broadmoor and Gert Town district, nor to subdivide Eastern New Orleans-- though several years from now hey, one never knows.) Red beans & ricely, (WT-en) Infrogmation 16:44, 2 July 2011 (EDT)

Ah, one more thing: The order of the districts. I think it makes sense to have the French Quarter first and the CBD second as we do, since they're the two most important for visitors. I propose after that first going upriver, then downriver, then progressively "back of town" something like this: 1) French Quarter. 2) Central Business District. 3) Central City. 4) Uptown. 5) Audubon and University. 6) Carrollton. 7) Marigny. 8) Bywater. 9) Treme. 10) 7th, 8th, and Upper 9th Wards. 11) Lower 9th Ward. 12) Mid-City. 13) Lakeview and Lakeside. 14) Gentilly. 15) Eastern New Orleans. What do you think? -- (WT-en) Infrogmation 17:00, 2 July 2011 (EDT)
  • Thanks for the new map! I've gotten a start on the New Orleans/Audubon and University article, and went ahead and put Image:New Orleans map test.png in the New Orleans article and rearranged districts per discussion. I'm not sure how to do the color coding, so I didn't do that. I'm pretty happy with your map. I think it's fine for our purposes, and looks great. A couple of minor points if you happen to do an update some time: 1)What you have labeled as "Bayou Bienvenue" is actually the MRGO/Intracoastal Waterway Canal. The Bayou Bienvenue is the squiggly line along the border of New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish. 2)Thanks for following my suggestions for boundaries of Audubon & University, but looking at how it all comes together I'd add the little bit on the river side of Fontainbleau to the border of Carrollton to the neighborhood, just to eliminate a dubious "tooth" of land which is added to Mid-City on the map. As no mentioned attractions are in this space, that's just a minor mater of aesthetics. 3) If you do decide to redo the map, I'm somewhat tempted to fine tune the border between Mid-City and Gentilly as well, but since that's a question locals debate and the borders shown are neat, easily understood, and seem adequate for our purposes, on second thought I think I'll pass. Thanks again! Cheers, (WT-en) Infrogmation 14:54, 9 July 2011 (EDT)

Source for Russian region maps edit

Hi Peter,
Could I recommend a better source for creating Russian region maps: Russian Wikipedia. Most articles for Административное деление региона already contain a fine vector map. I don't mean to criticize your current maps but they can be made with far less effort if not based on OSM :)

Less effort yes, but to me it's important to include the roads, rail lines, etc. --Peter Talk 20:25, 29 June 2011 (EDT)

Regional structure of Russia edit

Peter,

I'm thinking of modifying the regional structure of Russia to make it more consistant and similar to official one. By the moment I have several ideas I'd like to share with you to get some advise:

  • Kaliningrad Oblast according to most regional studies is included into Northwestern Russia, but is shown as a separate exclave by Wikivoyage. I propose to add Kaliningrad Oblast to Northwestern Russia;
  • After adding Kaliningrad Oblast, Northwestern Russia reasonably should include 3 sub-regions: 1) Core Northwest of Russia (Leningrad Oblast, Novgorod Oblast, Pskov Oblast), 2) European North of Russia, and 3) Kaliningrad Oblast;
  • Sakhalin and Kuril Islands belong to the same region, Sakhalin Oblast. To me, it makes sense to structurally join these two articles;
  • I seriously doubt it makes sense to split Vladimir Oblast into 3 sub-regions. This is a small region with limited number of attractions, and we will hardly develop an appropriate guide for each sub-region.
  • The same for Moscow Oblast, despite it has more attractions. Better one good article than 4 poor ones. So I propose to refuse from subregional classification of Moscow Oblast and Vladimir Oblast.
  • I definetily agree with Volga Region division into Upper, Middle and Lower Volga, but none of subregional pages has a map of oblasts inside. How to create them?
  • The same for Western and Eastern Siberia.

Thank you for your advise,

More on Russian maps edit

Hi, Peter! I have a question to the same point. You could have noticed that I outlined the maps for Vladimir Oblast (and also Tula Oblast as well as subregions for the Russian version), but the style I used is a bit different from what you chose for Novgorod Oblast and Moscow Oblast and probably other regions as well. Should we arrive at a common style for these maps? Personally, I am not very happy with the "translucent" maps (from OpenStreetMaps?) that are not well readable. I also have a problem with their manner of drawing secondary roads with very faint lines. Well, it does take more time to draw the roads by hand, but isn't it worth the effort? What's your opinion? (WT-en) Atsirlin 15:32, 12 July 2011 (EDT)

The approach towards creating region colors for the Moscow Oblast map was very rushed and unprofessional on my part ;) and I think that's what you are referring to when you say "translucent maps". Every style on that map, though, is my own—I chose the size and colors of the secondary road lines, trying to achieve a balance between the roads and the other details being shown, and basing all of this on our ever-evolving standards at the Project:Regions map Expedition. I'm still trying to come up with a way to re-do the regions layer well for that one particular map, but do you think these are readable: Image:Moscow_Oblast_map_(ru).png and Image:Novgorod Oblast map.png? The main difference between what I have done in the past and what I am doing with these latest maps is including all the public lands/forests and also the urban districts that come in the OSM maps. Is this just a sensory overload?
I hope you don't mind if I move this discussion to Project:Regions map Expedition. --Peter Talk 15:57, 12 July 2011 (EDT)

I know you have already expressed concern about this matter - but you can have my cut and paste message anyway :).

Hi there (with apologies for a cut and paste message). I am trying to muster up some interest again in the now almost moribund Destination of the Month feature. This used to be one of our more dynamic initiatives with lots of debate. Sadly, that is no longer the case. I have made some new nominations to try to get it going again. If you have a moment please pop over there. And some nominations would be good if you can think of any! Thanks. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:22, 9 July 2011 (EDT)

Nevyansk edit

Concerning "the first Russian star article": I am just curious if you are aware of Nevyansk that I have finished several months ago. Unfortunately, I can't assess whether this kind of destinations is of any interest to foreigners, but the formal criteria (map, pictures, completeness) are likely fulfilled. So, I would be grateful if you have a look at this article and help improving (or nominating-) it. (WT-en) Atsirlin 18:39, 12 July 2011 (EDT)

Russian city names edit

It occurred several times recently, so I would like to make a small correction. Russian city names are declined in just the same way as common nouns. For example, if you read "до Плесецка", the city name would be "Плесецк" (not Plesetska); "до Ржева" = "Ржев" (not Rzheva); "до Ярославля = Ярославль", etc. (WT-en) Atsirlin 05:03, 16 July 2011 (EDT)

Yes, this is one of those things I know, but miss when being hasty/sloppy ;) --Peter Talk 16:42, 16 July 2011 (EDT)

Washington, DC neighborhood map edit

Peter,

The neighborhood DC map is a wonderful contribution to Wiki and to the internet at large. Thanks! It could be made even better, however, with some minor tweaking. For your consideration, then:

Neighborhoods that should be included:

• Logan Circle

The area in and around Logan Circle has been a defined neighborhood for decades. While the boundaries are somewhat flexible, it's safe to place them - and many would concur - as 15th St., NW (West), S St., NW (north), 11th St., NW (east), and Massachusetts Ave., NW (south). To label this area as Shaw as you're doing now is inaccurate. No one who lives near Logan Circle calls the area Shaw.

• U Street

U Street is of course the proper name of a major street in DC, but it's also regularly used to denote the surrounding area. It is in fact the de facto neighborhood name and has been for some at least a decade. Boundaries here are rather precise: 16th St., NW (west), Florida Ave., NW (north), 9th St., NW (east), and S St., NW (south).

• Forest Hills

Forest Hills is a distinct neighborhood in Northwest DC. The neighborhood name has been around for decades, though after Metro's Red Line was constructed, the name of Van Ness took hold to some extent because of the Metro Station of the same name. But Forest Hills remains the true neighborhood moniker. Boundaries are: Connecticut Ave., NW (west), 36th St., NW. and Broad Branch Rd., NW (north), Rock Creek Park (east), and Tilden St., NW (south).

• Barnaby Woods

Barnaby Woods is a distinct neighborhood in the Chevy Chase area of Northwest DC. The neighborhood name has been used for decades. Boundaries are: Aberfoyle Pl., NW (north), Western Ave. (west), Tennyson St., NW (south), Oregon Ave., NW (east).

I strongly recommend that you include all of the above neighborhoods on your map. These additions will make it all the more complete and useful.

Also, may I suggest that you slightly expand the boundaries of the Dupont Circle neighborhood one block east to 15th St., NW (Dupont and Logan Circle abut each other), and include the area west of 16th St., NW, south of U Street., NW, too. Next, the small triangle of area south of Florida Ave., north of U St., NW, and west of 16th St., NW should be delineated as Adams Morgan. By all means, that is not Shaw! Nor is it Dupont.

A few other minor suggestions:

You have NoMa and Sursum Corda labeled a neighborhood. The NoMa moniker is quickly catching on and seems appropriate, while Sursum Corda denotes a moderately-sized housing project (199 units) that is soon to be no longer. Perhaps the Sursum Corda appellation should be dropped. Same goes for the Convention Center label. The neighborhood is called Mt. Vernon Square, and DC's convention center is located there. As for Swampoodle, the appellation is no longer in use and hasn't been for decades. I'm not sure what that area is called now, but it certainly isn't Swampoodle.

The area in an around the Navy Yard, south of I-295 and east of South Capitol St., is now being branded as Capitol Riverfront. This name, too, seems to be catching on. There's a Wiki page devoted to the area, but it mainly addresses the B.I.D. Nevertheless, this newly developing neighborhood will never be termed the Navy Yard because the Navy Yard itself is distinct and set off from the neighborhood in general but walls and fences. For more info, check out JDLand.com.

As for the Atlas District, I like it that you've included it on the map, being that it's relatively new. However, it seems a bit larger than should be. What exactly the area north of H St., NE is called I do not know and have never heard it described as anything but north of H Street. So, I guess, keeping the area as you've labeled it, the Atlas District, is okay.

Kingman Park, which you have correctly identified and set on map, can perhaps be divided into Kingman Park and Rosedale. What the exact boundaries of Rosedale are I cannot say. But such a subtle neighborhood distinction does exist.

All the best,

ContribWiki82

This is great feedback, and I agree with almost all of the recommended changes. I'm just going to go ahead and make the changes to the Shaw area too, although you are technically incorrect. The newer inhabitants, no doubt encouraged by realtors thinking it profitable to disassociate the lucrative area from its incredibly rich African-American history, don't use the term around much of the area, but U St is and always has been the commercial corridor of Shaw.
The two suggestions I have eschewed are to drop the Sursum Corda name, and to use Capitol Riverfront instead of Navy Yard. This might just be a stylistic difference between the two of us—I prefer established names and want to wait to see if the new (realtor-created) monikers will stand the test of time. Even "Atlas District" is problematic, but the usual awkward "H St NE" is... awkward. Capitol Riverfront is actually one I haven't heard used to describe anything other than the development program.
Also, Rosedale and Kingman Park are theories of neighborhood that overlap, and I don't know how to disentangle them. Kingman Park is applied to a larger area, which makes it more convenient for the map. Aside from adding an additional layer of regions (using maybe a slanted dashed field), I can't think of a way to show Rosedale.
You'll see a bunch of other changes too, especially in Ward 3—it's been a while since I spent any real time looking at this map. You might notice that I adjusted eastwards a bit the Forest Hills' western boundary to accommodate Wakefield.
Lastly, Swampoodle was just such a cool name, I tossed it in that leftover triangle. I don't know what that area should be called, and I don't think it can be considered a part of any of the surrounding neighborhoods. --Peter Talk 22:34, 1 September 2011 (EDT)

Maluku map edit

Whoa! That's about as off-the-beaten track as it gets Peter - great to hear. I have been to Halmahera, Ternate and Ambon, and would love one day to get out to the Bandas, Aru Islands, Seram etc. Of course, please do take the map. I will continue with trying to structure the region article - it is a very complex one due to myriad island groups. I guess I am probably more familiar with that region that anyone else at WT, so very happy to do that work in advance of your drawing the map. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 10:51, 26 July 2011 (EDT)

Can you help me a bit? edit

Hello, thanks for your welcome. I now made an account and was adding some info on restaurants in Eindhoven. However, my description of these places in the template are in italic in some cases, and not in others. I'm having trouble seeing what makes it italic and I'm not even sure if it's supposed to be, or not. I've been reading a whole lot of help/instruction pages but it's a lot to take in.. I'm also having trouble finding how to add an image. I actually managed to upload one to this shared database, but now I don't know how to get in in the article..Thanks, Justme

Thanks for your answers and corrections! I just copied wrong from the existing listings. I now found the handy "add listing" option, making it a lot clearer. I'll try to fix the Eindhoven article a bit over the coming time. Justme

That's some map! edit

Congratulations for the French Polynesia map. That's a very complex map to figure out, and I think your approach is perfect. I was pleased with my own efforts a while ago with the Solomon Islands and Palau but they were a stroll in the park in comparison. Really well done Peter. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 12:08, 26 July 2011 (EDT)

Thanks, but in fairness, the heavy lifting was already done at Commons! --Peter Talk 12:15, 26 July 2011 (EDT)

Big white space edit

Peter, your latest edit has introduced a big white space in Tonga. Can you do anything about it? (WT-en) Shep 15:55, 31 July 2011 (EDT)

The main problem is that the Quickbar is pushing the regions map far down. That leaves us either with the prospect of whitespace, or that the regions section is divorced from the map! Ideally, we will develop the very sparse understand section, so this won't be an issue even on a widescreen with high resolution. Another possibility would be to run with the proposal here. --Peter Talk 16:00, 31 July 2011 (EDT)
Or to write a longer understand section. Shep may be able to do that. There is nothing on climate for example.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 20:32, 31 July 2011 (EDT)

Please stop the disruption edit

Having helped create the Chicago wikivoyage page does not give your opinions greater weight.

Can you please use the talk page to create consensus instead of engaging in mindless revert wars? 132.160.54.155 17:40, 1 August 2011 (EDT)

As has been explained, you will need to see a consensus developed that your change is for the better, if you wish to see it implemented. --Peter Talk 23:26, 1 August 2011 (EDT)

Yes, the consensus supported change. People both directly complained about the boasterous lead and also showed their disapproval through graffiti.

Yet you edit-war.

I will continue to try to improve the quality of the article. Shame on you if you won't grow up... 132.160.54.152 16:08, 2 August 2011 (EDT)

There was never any consensus for change. There was an unknown number of people (at least one, no more than a few) who made suspiciously similar comments about the lead, but there was never any consensus that the version you're edit warring over was superior in any way. Panama edit

It has been a long one, and it is a country I know next-to-nothing about, so it would be great if you could cast your eye over Talk:Panama#Regions. --(WT-en) Burmesedays 08:20, 3 August 2011 (EDT)

Haiti map edit

Gorgeous map Peter, really. May I ask how you achieved the terrain pattern? The effect is borderline 3D, and most impressive. I see that the SVG is a large one, and having just downloaded, it hang my laptop. So I will not be able to examine it in detail until I am back on a machine with serious RAM in about 14 days.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 02:40, 4 August 2011 (EDT)

Gah, I actually forgot to specify the second source—thank you for catching this! This was another effort of a small group of mapmakers on Commons. They have been making them according to instructions developed by French WP User:Sting [1]. You can find his various tutorials through the links on his userpage under Atelier graphique (all in French, which means I'm using translate.google). The tutorials are really awesome, actually. I started on them, but am having some problems with Windows too tedious to relate (using only Ubuntu for now), which will prevent me from using some of the requisite software. --Peter Talk 18:44, 10 August 2011 (EDT)

A monumental star edit

We don't have a monument as a star article, and I have got the bit between my teeth with Borobudur. I would actually have preferred to go for the more leftfield Prambanan, but it's an uncertain state of affairs there after earthquakes and Mount Merapi's ash-falls. Borobudur has been a strong guide for a while now after I did loads of work on it in 2009. I am working on two maps (one micro, one more of a macro Get in map) --update, now done and added--, and playing around with some diagrams of the actual temple structure.

Casting an eye over it, is there anything else you can think of? Do you for example, think more detail about the very nature of Borobudur is appropriate in a travel guide? I don't want to get encyclopedic (I could!), but on the other hand I wonder if the content is a bit lightweight for such a major piece of human history?

I am happy that the sleep section is complete. Eat and drink could never have much content. Am especially pleased with the Around Borobudur sub-section of See. Many guides hardly mention these candis. The whole article needs a basic copy edit as it was neglected while I was away from WT. But that is the easy bit and will be the final task.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 13:01, 16 August 2011 (EDT)

I have nominated it. Quite important I think as it is the first of its kind.--(WT-en) Burmesedays 11:16, 26 August 2011 (EDT)
Ah, sorry for not getting back to you sooner regarding this article! There is one more-or-less precedent that I can think of: Washington, D.C./National Mall. I'll do my best to get a coherent response together on the starnom page. --Peter Talk 16:44, 26 August 2011 (EDT)

Spam on it: edit

Hi Peter - it looks like there's a spambot gone wild on Italian Wikivoyage, and you're listed as a bureaucrat there. I don't have access to update the blacklist there, but the patterns on the page (particularly the drug patterns) should be sufficient to catch most of it. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 11:14, 21 September 2011 (EDT)

Also, for what it's worth the it:Discussione:Faro topic has nothing but spam in its history and should probably just be deleted. Including the hundreds of revisions today there are over 2000 spam revisions in that topic. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 13:15, 21 September 2011 (EDT)
One more thing - please block this IP as soon as possible... -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 19:27, 21 September 2011 (EDT)
All done. (Sorry, overloaded IRL 'til next week.) --Peter Talk 23:34, 21 September 2011 (EDT)
It looks like the spam is continuing... would you be amenable to changing the permission on it:Project:Local spam blacklist to allow edits from registered users and I'll see if I can stem the tide? -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:02, 22 September 2011 (EDT)
Should be good. I'll probably want to reprotect later, though, since the spammers have targeted that page in the past. But we'll wait and see! --Peter Talk 00:14, 22 September 2011 (EDT)
I gave it a try but didn't seem to make a dent given the huge variety of URLs being used. However, it seems to be the same ten or so IP addresses making the edits, so blocking them might solve the problem. In any case, thanks for the attention, and go ahead and re-protect the blacklist. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 01:04, 22 September 2011 (EDT)
Italian Wikivoyage again seems to be overrun by spambots and would benefit from some IP blocking. If you'd like some help janitor-ing that site let me know and I'll throw my name up for nomination over on shared:. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 21:48, 14 November 2011 (EST)

New French translation of Oceania Map edit

Hi Peter,

(not sure if I'm supposed to write here or on Talk:Oceania)

I've seen that you have updated the map of Oceania using a new SVG file [2]. I'm currently translating all your maps in French. Oceania was done and I was wondering if you could have used the previous SVG [3] to add the new regions colors since it seems to be the original background? If not, I'll have to translate it again, not a big deal but still... Maybe I can copy/paste the fr layer into the new map but not sure.

That said, I really appreciate the enormous work you did with those maps. I'm currently finishing the map translation of all American countries for which you contributed a lot, I think. Thanks for this! (WT-en) Joelf 03:22, 24 September 2011 (EDT)

Ah, actually the original SVG was created from a completely different source (hence the radical difference in SVG filesize!). The new one has a much, much higher level of detail, with each individual Pacific island represented (and exaggerated to make it easier to understand).
I really appreciate seeing your translations, too. It's gratifying to know that the utility of the maps I've created extends beyond the work I've done alone ;) --Peter Talk 11:53, 25 September 2011 (EDT)
OK, I thought it was the same original one. I'm translating the new one. One more thing: when you create a new map in English, could you directly create a "en" sublayer with your text under eg "big region names" or "state/territory names"? That way, I just need to duplicate "en" in "fr" and update it. Otherwise, I need to select/move the text to a new sublayer. It'll make your maps translators'life easier :) (WT-en) Joelf 00:33, 27 September 2011 (EDT)

The Siege of Leningrad edit

-- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 09:10, 26 September 2011 (EDT)

--Peter Talk 18:40, 26 September 2011 (EDT)
Sandbostel. -- (WT-en) Sergey kudryavtsev 23:01, 27 September 2011 (EDT)

French_Polynesia_regions_map.svg updated version on WT/shared? edit

Hi Peter,

Me again. I downloaded the SVG map of French Polynesia wts:Image:French_Polynesia_regions_map.svg but I can't retrieve the layers used in your final PNG wts:Image:French_Polynesia_regions_map.png with grid, names, etc. Have you uploaded the latest SVG version on WT/shared or is there something I missed?

And by the way, if possible, for your next map creations, if you could create directly the English en sublayers in Region Names, etc. instead of editing top level layers, that would be easier for me to duplicate them to fr for translations instead of moving text around.

Thanks a lot for your help! (WT-en) Joelf 02:09, 2 October 2011 (EDT)

Ah, thoroughly my fault—I accidentally uploaded the wrong file! Should be good now.
I used to be good about language layers back when I was creating maps each time for both :en and :ru (and before that :es as well), but have slacked off since. (It takes an awful long time as a non-native speaker to track down all the translations for obscure geographical names.) --Peter Talk 14:18, 2 October 2011 (EDT)
OK, I got the right map now, thanks, much appreciated! For the language layers, just create the :en sublayer if possible and I'll take care of the :fr translations in a duplicate sublayer. I think that User:(WT-en) Burmesedays now tends to group all the texts in one layer instead of City Names, Region Names, etc. I don't know if it's a good habit since they have different fonts but it also makes my life easier when I look for all the texts in the map. Anyway, congrats for your work. I'll translate Oceania's subregions ASAP (it's a shame that French overseas territories have a better WT page in English :). (WT-en) Joelf 20:35, 2 October 2011 (EDT)

Arusha edit

Hi Peter. Regarding recent edits at Arusha yesterday that was a really strange edit sequence I experienced. I had some real problems with it due to preview pages not fully loading, time outs and similar withseveral re-attempts being made to get the final edit. I am not sure what I finally saw displayed as the final edit, maybe there was a page purge issue as well. I completed an edit then it displayed strangely, I reedited and found what I thought had uploaded had apparently not, and then did the whole thing again. Block content deletions were not the desired outcome, only the minor edits. I am not sure what went wrong there but it had duplicated sections so I deleted them. It gives me a headache to even think about it now. I certainly did not intend to execute any large content deletions. Have a look at this edit and I think you may understand why I removed all that content, the sections Understand, Get in, Get around, See and Do, Safari were duplicated. I have now taken them out again and done some further generalised minor corrective edits to listing formatting and similar. Have a look over it and make sure it is OK as that article is making my head spin now. It must have a juju curse on it. cheers -- (WT-en) felix 06:32, 17 November 2011 (EST)

Hello Peter,

I understand the one block as I thought that the reason for the add a listing was for just that guess I should have read more on that. But I had edited some of the other info in a manner that I feel was just being informative especially since the info is way out dated and all I did was inform. Could you please help me out with what I need to do to get this block removed so I can post some information on this location. Thank you for your assistance, Mike

Sierra Leone edit

Hi Peter. How long are you in Sierra Leone? I am a regular visitor - I have only just come back from my last trip. I wrote some of the original material for Sierra Leone. If you are still there next month and feel the need for a Star, we could meet. What are you doing there? (WT-en) Davidbstanley 01:51, 21 December 2011 (EST)

Ha, wish I could! I'm on my way home tomorrow, and just came for a week and a half to accept an invitation from a Sierra Leonean friend. I think I might become a regular visitor myself (although the steep air tickets will hinder me), as this is possibly the most beautiful place in the world. I say that, in any rate, having spent the last night in the Banana Islands and then walking/swimming along Tokeh and No. 2 beaches today! --Peter Talk 17:17, 22 December 2011 (EST)
I'm glad you had a good visit. It certainly is a beautiful country. Sierra Leone needs all the friends it can get. Memories of the bad times linger too long. I hope you get back without too much stress. I know it is a long journey via Europe. (WT-en) Davidbstanley 13:47, 23 December 2011 (EST)
