The Northern Suburbs of Kolkata are the industrial motherland of the city. It was used to be one of the major industrial hubs of West Bengal. As the industry of the state declined, so was the region. Beside industry, the Northern Suburbs are home to some of the holiest shrines in West Bengal, including Dakshineswar.
