We just returned from seeing the ruins and it should be noted that the government is doing its best to get them listed as one of the new 7 Wonders of the World. As such, there is no more climbing on the temple this year.—The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) Vsurg (talk • contribs) 1 Jan 2007

We recently visited Chichen Itza areound the Christmas Holidays 2009. I had been there about 5+ years before. I can't tell you how disappointed I was that it was turned into a flea market. I'm not talking outside the site but literally inside the archeological site itself. There were vendors selling their stuff along the paths to different pyramids. It was difficult to take in the wonder of it when you had people trying to sell you hankies,masks,drums,etc. as you're trying to appreciate the site. I don't know what the powers to be are thinking letting this go on. I personally would not go back. It really does take away from it. It was mentioned that the government had a hand in this. Wrong way to go!!

The municipal and estate governments have converted Chichen Itza in a flea market, very noisy and dirty. It is not what used to be. It is definitely a must see sighting in your trip to Yucatan, but try to spare enough time to rather visit Uxmal, which reminds the glorious days of Chichen Itza, impressive archeological ruins, much more tourist friendly and absolutely no vendors inside the archeological site. I hope the government soon realizes how damaging is to Chichen Itza's image the populist approach it has followed by allowing vendors inside the site.
