Thanks for all of your efforts at cleaning up the Boston articles! I suspect it's frustrating that others aren't getting very involved, but the Wikivoyage community is still small enough that it can be a challenge to find people knowledgeable enough about an area to collaborate. In any case, your enthusiasm and efforts are appreciated. Ryan • (talk) • 17:33, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Ryan! I'm hoping that by trying to define the dang neighborhood boundaries, it will reduce confusion about "what goes where". Maybe it will inspire more people to contribute. Thanks again! --ButteBag (talk) 20:35, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Your work on Boston and its district articles continues to be topnotch - dare I say it, even inspirational. If we had a Rookie of the Year award here, you'd be a shoo-in for it. I really hope you stick around even after your work on Boston is done, because Wikivoyage needs more contributors like you. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 03:15, 20 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you AndreCarrotflower! I was really blown away by the poor quality of the Boston article. I think it's one of the top 10 visited places in the USA? It's a fun project to chip away at during the dark winter hours. Thanks again! --ButteBag (talk) 14:55, 20 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Might I draw your attention...

here? I think the question recently arose whether Boston Logan Airport should be given its own airport article, and while it does not show up on the lists I compiled, I figured you might wish to want to weigh in, especially as it concerns the US airports on the list. Tour listings

edit

I was just looking at this edit. Please do not copy-paste language from company websites and never use first-person language. I'm sure if you read the "content" before you posted something like this, you'd realize it violates the prohibition on touting:

"Ride with us and see Boston the way it was meant to be seen - on two wheels!"

Hell yeah! Nope.

Thanks.

Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:36, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wow, you have amazing eagle eyes! I checked and it looks like I must have copied that from a different page without reading the content. Check this edit. I usually do a first pass on the listings without lat/long to see if the basic info is right. Then I check the copy before clicking the 'last updated MM YYYY' checkbox. I must have been rushing, sorry! These pages were in very poor shape, it feels like almost every listing was closed, missing, or touting. Again, wow, you are amazing! --ButteBag (talk) 14:40, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
It comes from years of recent edit patrolling. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:02, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well, thanks again and kudos to you! Also, anecdotal, but it looks like the offending content was on the site for about 8 years. --ButteBag (talk) 15:30, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
That's slightly depressing but not shocking. A lot of stuff somehow hides in plain sight for years on end on this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:44, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I always found it a weird phenomenon that some weird wordings and the likes stay unchanged for years on wikis but get detected due to an unrelated edit. But I guess there is no real way around this issue. Hobbitschuster (talk) 00:35, 4 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Temporary permissions bump?

Swept in from the pub

Hello!

I was hoping to implement a few updates to the pagebanner template. Looks like the css files are (smartly) locked from editing. I was hoping to be granted access to (I think it's common.css and mobile.css?) for a week or so to: push the table of contents off the banner image, line up the text a little better, and swap the transparent square behind the page title for a drop shadow. I brought this idea up here awhile ago and it seemed to get a positive response. I'd commit the changes in 2-3 separate edits so they may be rolled back more easily. I'll comment again when I'm done and someone can bump my account back down. I also get it that this is a very important template, so if this request is a whole thing, no big deal. Thanks!

--ButteBag (talk) 22:31, 3 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Apologies if the above question was gauche! Let's try it another way. If anyone has access to edit whichever css files affect the page banner, here are the updates to the code I'd like to make. Maybe you could make them instead? Thanks! --ButteBag (talk) 19:32, 6 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

#1: Move TOC off pagebanner image

   @media screen and (min-width: 768px)
   .wpb-topbanner-toc {
       /* remove these two styles */
       /* position: absolute; */
       /* background: rgba(0,0,0,0.5) none repeat scroll 0% 0%; */
       /* add this one style */
       background-color: #171717;
   }

#2: Replace transparent box behind TOC title text with a dropshadow

   .ext-wpb-pagebanner .wpb-topbanner .wpb-name {
       /* background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% rgba(0,0,0,0.3); */
       text-shadow: 0 0 15px black;
   }

#3: text in TOC should align with text in disambig=yes in pagebanner template, printDistricts template (, and maybe others ?)

   @media screen and (min-width: 768px)
   .wpb-banner-toc {
       /* padding: 0.2em 2em; */
       padding: 0.2em 1.25em;
   }

#4: Dots in TOC shouldn't highlight onhover:

   /* remove this entire style
   .ext-wpb-pagebanner li.toclevel-1 > a:after {
       content: " ·";
       font-weight: bold;
       padding: 0 0 0 0.1em;
   }
   */
   /* add these two new stlyes */
   .wpb-banner-toc li.toclevel-1:after {
       content: " ·";
       font-weight: bold;
       padding: 0 0 0 0.1em;
   }
   .wpb-banner-toc li.toclevel-1:last-child:after {
       content: none;
   }
   /* finally, edit this one style */
   @media screen and (min-width: 768px)
   .wpb-banner-toc a, .wpb-banner-toc a:visited, .wpb-banner-toc a:active {
       /* display: block; */
   }

OK, I've got it sorted on my end. Did you know you can edit your own personal style settings? If someone is an admin and wants to update MediaWiki:Common.css, you can use the styles here: User:ButteBag/common.css. I clicked around to a bunch of different pages and it's looking like a nice improvement to my eyes. Very 70's Vignelli chic! Styles copied below if you want to try them out in your own personal style file. Thanks for looking! --ButteBag (talk) 01:53, 11 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

 /* Move TOC off pagebanner image */
 @media screen and (min-width: 768px) {
   .wpb-topbanner-toc {
     position: relative;
     background: #171717;
   }
 }
 /* Replace transparent box behind TOC title text with a dropshadow */
 .ext-wpb-pagebanner .wpb-topbanner .wpb-name {
   background: none;
   text-shadow: 0 0 15px black;
 }
 /* Text in TOC should align with other template text */
 @media screen and (min-width: 768px) {
   .wpb-banner-toc {
     padding: 0.2em 1.25em;
   }
 }
 /* Dots in TOC shouldn't highlight onhover */
 .ext-wpb-pagebanner li.toclevel-1 > a:after {
   content: none;
 }
 .wpb-banner-toc li.toclevel-1:after {
   content: " ·";
   font-weight: bold;
   padding: 0 0 0 0.1em;
 }
 .wpb-banner-toc li.toclevel-1:last-child:after {
   content: none;
 }
 @media screen and (min-width: 768px) {
   .wpb-banner-toc a, .wpb-banner-toc a:visited, .wpb-banner-toc a:active {
     display: inline;
   }
 }

Couple quick questions

edit
Swept in from the pub
  • Are there any experienced travel topic editors who could say if Cycling in the United States is at guide status? I think it is, but I've never written a travel topic before, and I was hoping for a little reassurance!
  • Any interest in combining some regions into a new Eastern Massachusetts region?
  • Tech question: is it possible to use openstreetmap to combine (for example) this, this, and this into a single relation?

Thank you in advance and sorry about the noise! ButteBag (talk) 00:11, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

No need to apologise. The pub does get quiet at times and it's not really a big deal. Answering your questions:
  1. I'm no experienced travel topic editor, but it looks like it's at guide.
  2. My Inkscape crashed yesterday just as I finished making the map for New England (New South Wales) and it's ridiculously slow when I start it (and the Bezier pen misbehaves). I'll get back to this once I try and fix it.
  3. Unfortunately I'm still a novice editor on OSM and have no idea how to.
SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:19, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
LOL! I meant the USA New England region, but thank you for your comments. ButteBag (talk) 12:34, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Lol it just happened to be a coincidence that I was this happened after I uploaded File:New England NSW regions map.png. The Bezier pen issues happened trying to make a map for Venice. I thought you meant a new map for Massachusetts.
Alternatively, given how the boundaries for MA seem to be mostly straight lines, you could consider using geojson.io and uploading the data to Commons. Renek78 made this great tool so you could just paste the geojson.io code and you'll have fresh new mapmasks just out of the oven. See Las Vegas, Canberra, or Singapore for examples on how this is used. It is time consuming though – it took me a few hours to perfect the Canberra mapmask. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 12:55, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Holy crap this districtifier thing is amazing! TY for making it @Renek78 and bringing it to my attention! I guess this is basically what I want, but ideally the borders would display only where two districts touch if that makes sense. create_geoline_from_wikidata_array() or something. Sounds like it's possible to do that by creating a super-region on OSM... but you need a computer science degree and months of free time to create something they don't want anyway. Oh well, close enough.
I can use these tools to update some regions in Mass if anyone supports that. Thanks again! ButteBag (talk) 15:16, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
As for the combining o relations, it's definitely possible to create a relation combining multiple other relations. But I think OSM don't want/like private 'helper' data (like such stuff for grouping various objects into one), unless it makes some geographical/administrative sense. But you can always just use the three {{mapshape}}'s in WV and e.g. specify zero border (stroke-opacity=0) to make it look more nicely... -- andree 11:52, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Yeah it would be nice to keep the stroke tho... ButteBag (talk) 12:58, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Happy holidays, ButteBag!

Hello ButteBag, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It has been a pleasure to have you as a fellow Wikivoyager this year. Wherever you are, enjoy the festive season and stay warm (if you're north of the Tropic of Cancer)! Your help in maintaining, improving and expanding Wikivoyage will always be appreciated.

@SHB2000: Thank you! Hope you're warmer than I am this season lol! --ButteBag (talk) 13:30, 27 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

lol it's 32 °C (90 °F) outside right now where I am (and that's near a river). How cold is it in MA during the day? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 02:26, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ha, it's freaky. Maybe 20-30 Freedom Units higher than it should be this time of year. Great (for me) in the short term; so, so bad (for the planet) in the long term. ButteBag (talk) 20:29, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
