Talk:Cork

Latest comment: 4 months ago by Dbee01 in topic Google Ranking of WikiVoyage?

Hey rebel with a cause. If you have more info about the buses and trains that serve Cork, can you put it in the article - even just the names of the places that can be directly reached from Cork would be helpful? Thanks (WT-en) WindHorse 3 March 06

Train info has been expanded. Busses are more complicated, but I'll get to it... (WT-en) Rebel 26-March-06

Note: Lennox's Chip Shop on Bandon Road, is not on Barrack Street and is not the same people as the one on Angelsea Street, afaik. Rebel. 26-March-06

Deleted Capella Castlemartyr from the hotel listings because it is no longer open or a Capella property.

The stay safe section is nonsense. I;ve seen more fights in Spain and Portugal than I ever have in Ireland.

The Clarion has suffered drop in standers in recent times. after staying there in December and found it not to be as good as described in the article and would like it to be moved to mid range

edit

Dear Webmaster,

even if i am interested in tourist relevant topics, i would prefer to have pub crawl related, clear advertisement deleted from this page. if i am looking for such thing, ill find it myself. there is no need to have it on wikivoyage. best regards seb --92.225.88.20 12:35, 8 April 2012 (EDT)

Remaining tasks

edit

It looks to me like the most pressing tasks are putting in a map and making a pagebanner. Is there anything else you think is needed before we can nominate this article for Destination of the Month? The article has room for another photo or possibly two, if they would help the article, but it's already well illustrated. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:04, 22 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

So, does this belong under East Cork or West Cork? Texugo (talk) 18:19, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

The city is it's own entity and doesn't belong to a region in my opinion. --Donal.hunt (talk) 23:14, 30 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Every single destination article on Wikivoyage belongs to a region of some description; see the Crumbs page for more information on how this works. And welcome to Wikivoyage. ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 23:40, 30 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the welcome! I don't understand why the Cork article can't just be a direct child of County Cork? The Crumbs page seems to suggest that the organisation of pages is up to the community as long as it makes sense. Other cities in Ireland are direct child's of the their county pages (albeit they mostly don't have distinct areas within their own counties).
It can't be a direct child of County Cork, because our Co Cork region article has subregions (West Cork, North Cork and East Cork). City articles are always the "children" of the lowest regional division. This policy may seem strange, but it is consistent; even New York City is the direct child of a subregion called Metro New York, rather than being a child of New York (state) or even the Mid-Atlantic region.
The only way to change Cork city's position would be to propose doing away with the three subregions of Co Cork, and just having one large article for the county, which might make sense. However, we generally try to have no more than nine city articles in a given region, and a merged Co Cork article would have 17 - a bit problematic!
If it helps at all, Cork city is listed very prominently both on County Cork and indeed on the Ireland article, because it is an important city. A city's placement in the hierarchy doesn't affect where it can be listed. Hence NYC is listed under 'Cities' at every level on the hierarchy between Metro New York at the bottom and North America at the top.
I hope this makes sense? Let me know if not :) --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 02:04, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
19 articles is still acceptable for a bottom level region and the spread at the moment is not particularly good. As there is little information in the sub-regions of Cork County I think it would be a good idea to have just one region. --Traveler100 (talk) 03:02, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Looking at those articles, I'm inclined to agree. ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 12:08, 31 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
merged up the sub-regions, one paragraph about West Cork moved into Cork County. May need to look at redoing that section. --Traveler100 (talk) 09:14, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Event guide?

edit

Hi guys, Dara here from Rebel City Tour in Cork city. Ive created an event guide for Cork city ie. The best events over the next 7 days. I'll add the best deals for travelers to the guide soon. Would you consider featuring this guide?

Id love to add a link to wikivoyage on my blog in return?

https://rebelcitytour.com/guide/

Keep up the great work. :-) Dbee01 (talk) 05:45, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Very nice offer, Dara, but I'm sorry to say it wouldn't be in keeping with the what not to link to guidelines on this site. If you'd like to add some information to this article on a purely volunteer basis to help travellers, that would be wonderful, but your blog can't be linked in the article, unless a consensus develops on this talk page to make an exception for it, and that's hard for me to imagine, as we prefer for our guides to be as complete as possible, rather than to refer readers to other guides. However, you could try making an argument for how information on your blog couldn't possibly be added here even though it's valuable to travellers.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:51, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
thanks Ikan. I completely understand your point-of -view. My motto when it comes to online, open communities is - give more than you receive. Just thought I'd check beforehand.
Some background: The idea behind the guide is to pick out the best events and deals for travelers to Cork over the coming 7 days. This would be hard for you guys to duplicate no? I'm a local guide :-) I'd have to update your wiki on an hourly basis - forever :-( Dbee01 (talk) 06:03, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Understood. Let's hear from some other users. Should we allow a link? Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:09, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's certainly better than programming a bot to update the article manually. --SHB2000 (t | c | m) 11:31, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks SHB :-) Just to reiterate, these are events (and deals) chosen by me personally to appeal to travellers to the city. Dbee01 (talk) 11:56, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Google Ranking of WikiVoyage?

edit

Guys, i know this is probably a discussion for another forum and it's probably been discussed-to-death previously many times. However, I'm wondering why the for-profit original version of the TravelWiki ranks above this one on Google? I've done a bit of background research ie. read Reddit. And people seem to think it's a duplicate content / canonical issue. I know more about SEO than most guys. I'm genuinely curious as to how the community here are approaching this problem? Dbee01 (talk) 12:00, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Dbee01: Weird, because the rankings on this page show That Other Site That Shall Not Be Named as a walking corpse. I do agree with your point, though. SHB2000 (t | c | m) 12:27, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @SHB2000 the google SERPS for me in Cork City show [that site] as ranking first on the SERPS (Search Engine Results Page) :-( https://ibb.co/4MDF89H Dbee01 (talk) 12:33, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
BTW SimilarWeb is garbage IMO. Bordering on criminal. Dbee01 (talk) 12:34, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do miss the Alexa rankings :-(. SHB2000 (t | c | m) 23:33, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
alexa++ me2. Lol. Dbee01 (talk) 09:47, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

The photo choices aren't very good?

edit

Just my opinion guys...

  • the banner pic is just a row of houses; could be anywhere.
  • the second pic; St. Finbarr's in Cork rocks!
  • the pic of the train station kinda socks
  • the Patrick's St. Pic is ok-ish
  • I like the St. Anne's Church pic
  • the castle pic should be blarney castle ie. Kiss the stone fame
  • the rugby pic should be native Irish sports (GAA) Cork team
  • the last 3 could be improved also
  • the pub pic - the brog, is really, really old

I have some pics, I can release them under CC. Non-branded of course. They'd really spruce up this page... Dbee01 (talk) 15:13, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

That would be great! The easiest way for us to use photos is if they are uploaded to Commons. Replacing photos with clearly better photos usually doesn't require discussion, but replacing pagebanners requires discussion. The usual procedure is to put thumbnails of the existing pagebanner and any proposed replacement banners on the talk page for the article in question and wait a few days for responses, to see if there's a consensus to keep or replace the banner. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:32, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
some suggestions; my images...

Thanks. Go ahead and add or sub any thumbnails you like in the article (as long as there aren't too many images, overall, per Wikivoyage:Image policy#Minimal use of images). I didn't see a pagebanner, though. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:29, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ive changed some of the photos guys. This is my nomination for banner pic...https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Failte_go_Corcaigh.jpg Dbee01 (talk) 03:15, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. For everyone's convenience:

current banner

proposed replacement
I think the current banner is much more interesting to look at, so though I have yet to visit Cork, I'd favor keeping the current banner. The dimensions also look wrong in the proposed replacement. Do they conform to Wikivoyage:Banner Expedition#Image size? It appears not, as 800 x 7 would be 5,600. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:59, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Ikan. I can resize the resolution of the photo no problem. To conform to the proper size. My only issue with the present banner is that it could depict any urban area in Ireland or the UK for that matter. Fáilte is Gaelic for welcome. The corresponding translations denote Cork as a welcming destination for travelers. Id propose changing this banner. I'll wait for a quorum though. Dbee01 (talk) 08:47, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I understand your point, and I could be persuaded to support changing the banner, but as I said, I don't think your proposed replacement is that interesting an image. No offense, I hope. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:38, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
-) no offense taken. I see your point. Give me some time and I'll think up a replacement image that suits this banner resolution. With the communities support, we'll improve this banner... Dbee01 (talk) 09:46, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
