Dengue vaccine

According to our sister project, there is a lot of research into a vaccine against Dengue and some of them have apparently yielded a product that is effective in humans. We should monitor this and update our article accordingly. Hobbitschuster (talk) 23:30, 15 January 2016 (UTC)

This is very exciting! Mosquitoes love my girlfriend's blood, so I could not in good conscience take her to a country with endemic dengue like Malaysia as long as there was no good prophylaxis against dengue. According to reports I have seen, one vaccine exists now & several others are being worked on. The French company with the working one are "flipping the model", getting it approved first where it is most needed — Mexico, Thailand, Brazil, ... — rather than first in US & Europe. Sanofi-Pasteur's web site says they got their first Asian approval in the Philippines in December. I asked a doctor (Filipino infectious disease specialist) about it today & he thought it would be available in March. Pashley (talk) 16:00, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

In the Philippines there is a pilot program giving it free to some fairly large number of school children and a plan to do all the country's kids if pilot results are good. The ₱5000 is at a downtown clinic; I plan to check at a hospital & will report what I find.

For some travellers, age may be a problem. I believe it is only approved for ages 9-45. I'll see what a doctor here says & report that too. Pashley (talk) 14:34, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Watsons are a chain of pharmacies with locations across SE Asia. Their Philippine stores now offer vaccination for ₱4000 (about US$80) for each of the three shots. The pharmacist I talked to thought there was no upper age limit. Pashley (talk) 23:36, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

"Two studies of a vaccine found it was 60% effective and prevented more than 80 to 90% of severe cases.[54][55] This is less than wished for by some.[56]"[3] So it is okay but not excellent. It is getting complicated. The Philippines have withdrawn their approval of the vaccine and Sanofi restricts dengue vaccine "to limit its use to people who have had previous exposure to dengue virus". Pashley (talk) 11:44, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

Philippine gov't have now re-approved it, not sure with what (if any) restrictions. Doc I spoke to did not recommend it for me, in my 70s & not in a high-risk area. Pashley (talk) 06:38, 15 November 2019 (UTC)
