Talk:Fortifications
Middle East
editFirst, it's odd to have a continent-level section for "Middle East", which should be allocated to Asia. But having said that, Oman has notable fortifications, and isn't Petra in part fortified? And then there are various Crusader castles in the coastal regions of Israel, Lebanon and Syria. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:03, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Asia
editAlso in Indonesia: Fort Tolukko in Ternate. Red Fort in Agra, Amber Fort in Jaipur. And what about Japan?
I think I have a problem with this article, which is that the list of fortifications could go on forever, making this a very long list article. But arbitrarily excluding most pre-20th-century fortifications makes this article potential worse than nothing. So what's the solution? Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:08, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Dear Ikan Kekek came to know about this wikivoyage article from ShakespeareFan00. The article can go on and on unless we fix up certain time line. I would suggest we can limit it to forts built till the 17th century. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 15:31, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- One year post comment: Absolutely not. If then, remove all the forts from Oceania and South America. 17th century is far too western/Asian biased. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:42, 28 August 2021 (UTC)
Article too Eurasia centred?
editDoes anyone else think that as well? Why are there barely any in the other continents. Was Rangan Datta's suggestion implemented? (If I'm missing the discussion somewhere). Sure, okay, so most of the ancient forts are in Eurasia, but that isn't really a good reason to leave out the other continents, especially when the other four continent's revolutions only really began after Eurasia.
But if that suggestion went ahead, I'd think that's ridiculous. There's a lot of forts that are outside Eurasia and are really popular tourist destinations. (e.g. Bare Island Fort, it was a fort built after the 17th century, but considering it was used to film Mission Impossible II, it's quite hard to go there where there's no crowd) Eurasia isn't the queen of fortifications. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:38, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- There are listings from fourteen countries in Eurasia, with 1–6 listings each, 22 listings in total. I cannot see that'd be excessive (to the contrary, many important ones are missing). I agree with IK and RD that there should be a clearer focus, but I don't see any reasoning (or any obvious reason) behind the suggested cut-off year. I don't see adding some twenty listings from the Americas and a dozen from Africa making the article unwieldy, but if that's not enough, the clearer focus may be needed. To avoid listyness, we might want to add more text on general and regional historic developments. –LPfi (talk) 15:33, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
