Talk:Kızılırmak Delta Bird Reserve
External links
editIt's against Wikivoyage guidelines to have passages like this:
Flora and fauna are summarised here [link] with more details here [link].
It's fine for an editor to use an external link as a source of information, but Wikivoyage articles are meant to be self-contained and provide all the information that a visitor would need. We do use primary external links, such as to a hotel's or restaurant's website, or indeed to the official home page of a bird reserve, but farming out information is not Wikivoyage style. So can we please substitute essential information for these links (though of course without plagiarizing) and cite them as the source for the information as appropriate in edit summaries? - Oh you Wikivoyage people are so much politer than some people on Wikipedia! But I don't understand why you "don't want people going to other sites to see lists of flora or fauna". There are so many different kinds of birds in the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Reserve that I don't have time to list them. So can I mention just a few and link inline to Kızılırmak Delta to say there are links to more complete lists from there? As that Wikipedia article is not just about the bird reserve it is not exactly the same subject. Chidgk1 (talk) 09:17, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- There's no need to list every single bird. Mention a few of the most interesting ones. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:52, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
Page banner
edit@Chidgk1: Thanks for contributing! I think you added a page banner (image at the beginning of the article) a while ago, which I cropped to the standard 7:1 ratio. But now I see that there are many alternative images within the article which are higher quality. Perhaps one of those could be used as the article's pagebanner? I would do that if you (and others, if they are interested in the discussion) would prefer a different image. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 13:39, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. Personally I am happy with the current page banner. But if you or others wish to change it I have no objection. Chidgk1 (talk) 05:52, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- If you like it then I have no concerns, either. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 11:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Why not refer people to more details off site?
edit@Ikan Kekek There are many links in the Wikipedia article which might be useful for keen naturalists but not for most readers of Wikivoyage Chidgk1 (talk) 07:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
- You are suggesting a change in policy. Make an argument at Wikivoyage talk:Links to Wikipedia. I don't think you will be successful, though, as this is a recurring topic of discussion. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:55, 11 March 2023 (UTC)
- You have linked to a rather long discussion which I did not read as I have no interest in changing policy. If that discussion says anything relevant please explain.
- I did not make any links to Wikipedia but wrote a sentence saying that there are more links on the Wikipedia article. In the first discussion above you say to just mention a few of the more interesting birds - that is fine but some people may wish to know more and may not realise there is a Wikipedia article about this delta which has loads of links to academic stuff which keen birders or naturalists may be interested in. That there is a Wikipedia article is not obvious when looking at this article on an iphone for example. Chidgk1 (talk) 11:59, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
- That is prohibited per Wikivoyage:Links to Wikipedia; like Ikan mentioned, propose a change in policy FIRST, because basically you are suggesting a change in policy. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 12:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
- I am not proposing making a link to Wikipedia Chidgk1 (talk) 12:08, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
- Your first comment reads otherwise, though. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 12:11, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
- There are various places where people can get more information about birds around the web. We don't need to tell them. We should just include whatever information we think travellers will want to read and leave them to their own resources if it's not enough for them. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:03, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
- Also, we already discussed this in the "External Links" thread at the top of the page. This feels like a bit of a virtual guerrilla war by you. As we said, if you want to change policy, you know where you can discuss that. If not, follow the guideline of keeping Wikivoyage articles self-contained. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)
