"Go next" section

edit

The folks at fr.wikivoyage seem to have different standards about touting and listings than en.wikivoyage does. First, "Go next" usually doesn't have specific listings in en.wikivoyage articles, only Wikivoyage-linked names of places with one-liner descriptions. Second, tours that originate in Mombasa, if listable under this site's tour policy, which boat trips normally would be, are listed under "Do," not "Go next." And third, the descriptions of the tours are unacceptably touty. I post about this here because I lack the time to deal with these things right now. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:42, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Also, "Go next" listings are normally not templated on this site and lack Geo. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:45, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Matter of fact many of the touty listings were already here before bringing over the French stuff, in the Do section and all. When adding coordinates to the listings I noticed some of the places were almost 100km away, so I figured Go next would be a better place for them. Actually they could be moved to Coastal Kenya instead, and just mentioned with a few sentences in Mombasa's Go next. As these are individual attractions or small places I think we should keep the coordinates, though Template:Marker is more suitable for this than listings.
I'll try to "dilute" the touty tone a bit.
Ps. thanks for copyediting. When translating stuff between two foreign languages and even listening to music in a third foreign one, sometimes you can inadvertently write some really weird stuff and you won't notice it yourself (or if you do, a few days later) :D ϒpsilon (talk) 14:31, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've done a bit of French-to-English translating myself, so I know very well that it can be a lot more complicated than a literal word-to-word correspondence. Your work is great. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:48, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. :) ϒpsilon (talk) 14:56, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. And also, using the marker template for "Go next" listings is fine. Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:58, 6 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Funny, this must be the night for me to disagree with myself. I think markers aren't normally used in "Go next"... Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:05, 27 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Page banner

edit

I have change the photography of the page banner because Diani Beach is not in Mombasa County but in Kwale County. I replaced it with a photo of the beach of Nyali.

Need an AIDS warning?

edit

Back in the 1980s I lived in Saudi Arabia and Kenya was a popular holiday destination for expats there, including lots of sexually deprived single males who found Kenyan whores wonderful — plentiful, cheap, ... I do not know how much of that goes on today, but I'd wager a large sum that it is non-zero.

Meanwhile, much of Africa has a severe AIDS problem and (UN statistics) for Kenya are scary, a 6% rate for the population as a whole and almost certainly higher for sex workers.

Should we add a warning about this? In this article? Pashley (talk) 18:09, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Although the warning is already in Kenya#Stay healthy, I don't see any harm in adding it to the Mombasa article too. Major tourist destinations in the tropics tend often to be sex tourism destinations to some extent. ϒpsilon (talk) 18:32, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, absolutely add the warning in "Stay safe." Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:46, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've added a link to the Kenya safety guidelines. The section is long enough that I didn't see much purpose in adding just the HIV warning. Akuchling (talk) 00:00, 7 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Contrary to what I posted in 2014, maybe it isn't needed below the country level. What do other people think? Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:03, 27 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Add of user 181.224.248.206

edit

@Ibaman: The add of user 181.224.248.206 (*Hakuna Matatu Bus, Nyali turn off, Diani Beach, Kilifi and Watamu Stops) was a really helpful add that I will use myself too. Was pity you delete it. DocWoKav

OK, that carries some weight with me. But how many articles do you think that link should be posted in? Is it a really common company like Greyhound in the U.S. that is a standard nationwide bus company? If so, their local stop should in fact be listed in every article for a place it serves, with a link. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:01, 27 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
This transport is interesting for people at the South coast (Diani Beach) and Mtwapa, Malindi at the North Coast. That's where i would put it in. From Mombasa you can go anywhere easily as all transporters start there, so no real need to put it here. Those small startup companies are very helpful at the coast as taxi is too expensive and the minivans are not really something for tourists. They offer a certain comfort at reasonable price. DocWoKav
Ibaman, what do you think? Should that user be reinstated and some of their listings be restored in the interest of travelers? Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:46, 28 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Well, I defer to DocWoKav's opinion; his field knowledge of Africa commands a lot of weight. The sheer volume of identical listings on a lot of pages got me uneasy as always. Let's revert the ones he suggested, it's appropriate, I think. Ibaman (talk) 02:17, 28 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Of course you are right that it is not nice if the same things are in different pages. In the case of the coast of Kenya, tourists either go to the south coast or north coast. They will not read what is in the part where they are not going. In this respect, unfortunately, it must be repeated in the 3 pages.DocWoKav
