Scope

Should we try to mention the creme de la creme of art museums? I would add the British Museum, the National Gallery in London and the Uffizi, the Vatican Museums deserve a mention, and there are undoubtedly museums in Austria and Germany that deserve mention. And then what of countries like Japan, India and Mexico? I would add, as an American, that while there are some terrific art museums in the U.S., none of them is as comprehensively great as the Louvre, British Museum, Prado, et al. But trying for a comprehensive list of the greatest of the great naturally risks spiraling out of control. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:24, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

In that case, maybe we should try for consensus here first on what a relatively complete list of the very greatest large art museums (including archaeological museums with a lot of great ancient art) should be. I don't think we want to list great but really small museums, like the one in the Palazzo Pubblico in San Gimignano, because then the list really would spiral out of control. I very much agree. And then we haven't even started talking about things that are mostly outside museums from the moai on the Easter Island and prehistorical petroglyphs to iconic souvenirs and public art. And then of course architecture itself, which we already have a few articles about. We could really write a whole new wiki about this topic.

For the art museums, I think a good definition of "famous" is one that's also popular with people who rarely otherwise go to art museums. ϒpsilon (talk) 07:07, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

If so, we have to include the best museums in the US, too, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York, MoMA, probably the Whitney Museum of American Art and possibly the Frick Collection; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, probably the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum; the Chicago Art Institute; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; several in DC including the National Gallery, the Phillips Collection and probably some of the Sackler Galleries; LACMA, the Getty Museum, maybe the wonderful medium-sized Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena; the Cleveland Museum of Art - and probably a dozen or so I haven't thought of. Well, if we're worried that the list of museums will grow too long we need to set some limit. If it's not a problem, then let's don't. :)

Also, we also need to have a couple of other lists for famous outdoor artworks and — this is a tough one to delimit — iconic souvenirs. ϒpsilon (talk) 15:04, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

Perhaps it would be best not to list anything in this article, but to have separate articles about Paintings and other flat art, Sculpture, etc., or even Art museums. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:33, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
