I am curiouse what you mean. I also edit at Wikitravel and I know there wass changes there, but there seem to be a plenty of editors keeping the site clean and running. I am liking that idea... But I am not so sure what "to win" means? Most WMF projects fail except Wikipedia. Given that the search engine programs do not rank copied web pages I do not see how the site copied from Wikitravel can ever be really useful for a traveller because they will search and never find it? And the ads-Wikitravel do not bother me, all Internet has ads, it's normal. I agree with Ikan. There's a difference between WP and WV. If something is successful at Wikipedia or any other sister project, it doesn't means it gonna works here too. And one who find an article to be missing, xe do not need enough knowledge to start that missing article. Xe can simply create an article and fill it with the standard sections. I see that you have made some structural changes, moving material from Travel activities to Sports and Winter sports. I copied and added a little more, but your intention is not very clear (are some of these just intended as indexes or disambiguation pages, how much summaries, suggestions for missing topics should there be, are biking and horseback riding sports etc.). I'm not sure how it's going to have an acceptable tone, but you're the only one who knows what you are thinking of, which is part of the problem with "requested articles" in the first place.

Hi again. Thanks for fixing those. One more thing you should take note of-- the image you put in China and the Great Wall articles is the right ratio but is too small to stretch all the way across the page on wider screens. Hi -- sorry, I've got another banner size request, too. The image for Norway looks very good, but it needs to have the 7:1 ratio.

Also, for guides like Copenhagen that have been featured as Destination of the Month or are a Star, the banner can be set up to show the icons. Just add dotm=yes (for Destination of the Month), star=yes (for Star articles) or otbp=yes (for Off the Beaten Path), and delete the {{title-icons}} template (it's usually near the bottom of the page). Main and See also

I note you changed the templates {{main}} to {{see also}} in Winter sport. Is the former not to be used? I think this is a typical example where all relevant info should go to the other article, only a summary should be in the section of Winter sport and thus the former template should be used. To me See also is for cases where the information in the referenced article is probably relevant, but with a clearly different point of view. --LPfi (talk) 08:01, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

I only know how they are used at sv-wp, but if both are to be used, there should be a difference in how they are used. If you think "main" for some reason is not appropriate for this case or you think there should be only one, please explain why.

The difference has a practical implication: with "main", editors know that it is the other article that should be edited, and only the most important points repeated here. "See also" gives no such hint (unless section headings and article names match, but names and headings can change), and we risk having sections here and there, intended to summarize the main article, in fact grow larger than it.

Please note that although Travel topics page index works relativity automatic, its advantage that if someone adds a new page or changes PartOfTopic then the index updates itself. The one exception to this is if a top level page is renamed. Note that in this cat the main page need to have its link updated. Also please note that the categories of pages with sub-pages also need to be fixed. Road articles

Hi!

I've noticed you've created a couple of road articles about European roads in Sweden. To my understanding there should be something "special" about the route itself (ie. something more than just getting from A to B) for it to be a valid travel topic (also see the lengthy discussion here). Nothing really wrong with the routes you've created so far (the E10 is quite scenic too if I remember correctly) but just thought of letting you know in the case you're planning to create itineraries for all Swedish E-roads. Ancient Roman pasta

Thanks for your fascinating edit to Roman Empire! It might interest you that when I was visiting the Lupanare in Pompeii, a man said that when it was first excavated, they found out that one of the customers (or maybe one of the prostitutes, but I think he said a man) was having a lunch break and didn't have time to eat his pasta e fagioli before the lava killed everyone. Monarchies

I think is an excellent opportunity to qualify what the monarchies left (or didnt) in the places where they were located - so I think the article needs to develop substantiallly to qualify why and how some kingdoms are like the 'Ozymandis' poem - archaeological sites in the desert, versus the romanov industry in st petersburg where it is as though Nicholas is still alive and ruling even now ... - I am more or less saying that the monarchy talk page issue about 'just a list' can be countered to what extent the monarchies stamp on a country still carries weight in the countries. Also there is a lot of anthroplogy in some of the more obscure asian and african monarchies - it really needs to be brought out, rather than subsumed into a mere list imho. cheers JarrahTree (talk) 03:27, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Cuisine articles

Hi, and thanks as always for your work!

I'm not sure, though, why you start articles on cuisines. My feeling is that I'd never start such an article without even basic travel-related information. We don't need to paraphrase other sources about the basics of North African cuisine in a separate article. The only purpose for this kind of article on Wikivoyage, in my opinion, is if we can tell people which region, town or village is most famous for X, Y and Z dish. Otherwise, what's the point of having the article here?

Also, minor but recurrent point: In English, we talk about Italian cuisine, French cuisine and Spanish cuisine. "The French cuisine" sounds weird to me. "The" is not usually used with cuisine except in the phrasing "the cuisine of France/Italy/America/etc."

Thanks for the remarks about grammar; I am not native in English. Except a list of dishes, these articles could preferrably expand on practical information about eating and drinking in various regions, such as meal times, table manners, tipping, availability of vegetarian foods, and alcohol. Tipping isn't a matter of cuisine, nor is table manners. Meal times aren't really cuisine, either, though they obviously can have an effect on culinary practice (see, for example, the cultural context of tapas in Catalonia). Intercity buses in the Nordic Countries

It seems to me that you and User:LPfi have some knowledge of intercity buses in the Nordic countries. Do you think this would be a better approach to the topic than the current small section in the Nordic countries article and the rail and bus travel in Sweden article? It appears to me that the Nordic countries have a bus market predating the German and French legal changes of the 2010s and are still mostly dominated by local companies. Or am I mistaken on that? For geographic reasons, most Nordic bus routes either go within one country, or connect to Germany or some other non-Nordic country. The few lines which cross borders can be described in intercity buses in Europe. /Yvwv (talk) 18:14, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

[Edit conflict]: I have to observe, though, that here, too, you deleted good information that I believe needs to remain in the article: It borders Myanmar (Burma) to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the southeast, and Malaysia to the south. There is no substitute for providing readers with a clear sense of where a country is. You could slightly rephrase to "It abuts [or has borders with] Malaysia in the south..." Thanks for the information on jungles; sorry to have looked at obsolete sources. In my opinion, the lead section does not need to bring up the bordering countries. That information can be easily found through looking at a map, and is probably not what a reader would look for in a guidebook (we are not Wikipedia). Instead, the lead section should present facts which would be interesting for a potential visitor, such as major attractions, landforms, and suitable activities. Most of the information we present on this site can be found elsewhere. There are plenty of better sources for history and cuisine, and a lot of the other information we present can be found in other guides like Tripadvisor and Michelin. I think that which countries border on the country you're reading about is quite useful information. It doesn't have to be in the lede, but if not, it should be in "Understand". Indochina

I'm sorry, I don't agree that Thailand is part of Indochina. The countries that are usually considered to be part of Indochina were all part of French Indochina during the colonial period: Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. With regards to South Korea, it is indeed currently 'trapped' in its relationship with North Korea by virtue of geography. It is more of a technical conflict than a 'live fire' war, and for the most part is ignored by most South Koreans even when the occasional shot is fired. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:03, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Mountaineering and rock climbing

I note you changed the scope of the articles Mountaineering and Rock climbing, without any changes to the articles themselves (apart from a note on base camps and links to some modes of transport). I am not very happy. Rock climbing is a sport in itself and does not necessarily have anything to do with mountains. We do not handle climbing techniques at all – and should not until we have contributors who are both sufficiently experienced and willing to write a worthwhile guide here (I now notice the Basics section, but I think it does not catch the distinctions used in mountaineering). Mountaineering, on the other hand is not about "travel through mountains" in general; advice on driving mountain roads should be somewhere else.

Are you planning to rewrite the articles according to the new scope definitions? Have you some idea of how the old scopes would be included, served elsewhere or not being worthwhile?

Travel maps for Latin Europe

I've gone ahead and modified the existing maps to work with Latin Europe. I've modified both the Europe regions map, as well as a Latin Europe-only map. Both of them are available in SVG and PNG, should you have a preference to use an SVG extention.

We can consider removing the capital cities of the microstates, so the territory becomes visible. /Yvwv (talk) 17:36, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Technically speaking, I can remove the capital city markers, practically speaking though, that will result in little gain. Andorra would be the only microstate that would be shown. The other three are simply too little to be shown. On top of that, the Vatican is located within Rome, so Rome and the Vatican currently share their capital city markers. What I can do, however, is change the capital markers to show the colours above within the marker. The marker for San Marino, for example, would have the same colour for the circle in the background, but the star should be displayed in #5bcc48. This way, the colours listed in the region list would not be lacking in the image. I'll see if I can get that done today, if not, I'll do it tomorrow. I'll let you know when I get the images updated. Also, once I find the right maps for it, I'll also add the E-routes, airports and main railways, which should be on these sorts of maps, but rarely get added. This'll probably be done no earlier than next weekend. The map as I linked above is sufficient, but in no way complete yet.

Winter in ...

Was there a discussion somewhere about moving the Winter in ... articles to outdoor life? At least Winter in the Nordic countries does not seem to be very concerned about anything I'd call outdoor life. Sure, skiing and skating are mentioned, but e.g advice for clothing is for getting from the nightclub to the hotel rather than for spending a day outdoors – and activities such as going to a Christmas fare or watching New Year fireworks are hardly outdoor life.

Hi! Can I ask why you reverted my edit from this morning? The article did not have a zoom level attached to the map? This was an appropriate edit to show the entire province. Even if you don't like the zoom level I chose, it is a simple matter to choose another zoom level (just change the number after "|zoom=" to what you would like it to be.

The reason for making the change is that the article currently shows up in the Maintenance panel because a zoom level has not been specified.

Wikivoyage.org Alexa rank

Every day, you post up WV and WT's new Alexa ranking. Thanks for doing a really good job at this, consistently, and I can never get there and update the statistics first. It'll be great if WV gets to a four digit rank someday.

I think the Alexa rank is quite useful, and I don't see why we should hide our rank away at WV:Wikivoyage and Wikitravel, especially when currently WT has a higher rank than us. I don't want to make additional work for you, but what if we posted our Alexa rank on the about page as well? If Wikivoyage overtakes WT on Alexa rank, then it makes sense to post our rank next to WT's from a Wikivoyage "sales" point of view, but at the moment by putting the two ranks side by side it's like we are not promoting ourselves too well. Alexa ranks, UTC time, etc

Alexa seems to update the website rankings around 16:00 UTC, which is annoying because it doesn't match our UTC schedule. Since we include the date of the Alexa rank shown on the Wikivoyage/Wikitravel comparison table, I'm not always sure which date to use.

I often update the Alexa rank around 0:00 — 4:00 UTC. If I do that, which date should I use? The day according to UTC or the day according to Pacific Time, which seems to be more what we're doing? Diners are not very relevant to the Fine dining article; although really good ones can certainly serve very good food, there's really nothing about them that's similar to a high-end restaurant. Construction costs and corruption / authoritarianism

The excellent blog www.pedestrianobservations.com does a lot of coverage of construction costs on the rail sector. Among the lowest was achieved in 1990s Madrid, a phase now known to have been insanely corrupt. Authoritarianism doesn't seem to correlate either way. Semicolons

Thanks as always for doing so much wonderful work!

There's one kind of edit you make that I always change, so I thought I'd give you a little insight into why I do that. It looks like authorities differ on whether it's OK to use a semicolon in a sentence with two clauses that couldn't both be sentences by themselves without adding any words, but for whatever it's worth, this site shows how I use semicolons. I would normally replace a semicolon with a comma (or in limited cases, a colon) every time I see that the second clause is a dependent clause like it is here. I'm a little less rigid about the use of commas in short sentences where a semicolon might be used, but semicolons where commas would be better in my opinion are kind of a pet peeve. There is one difference in how semicolons are presented there from how I have learnt they are used in Swedish. This is typical use: "I ordered a cheeseburger for lunch; life’s too short for counting calories." But I wouldn't refer to the clause before the semicolon like in" (italics mine) "Money is the root of all evil; I don’t believe the reverse is necessarily true." or "We can go to the museum to do some research; Mondays are pretty quiet there. National Historic Trail articles

I am wondering if it would be better to group these into one article, rather than creating a bunch of stubs so that readers can get a quick overview of the trails that are available. I've been trying to make useful articles out of stubs created by people 5, 10, 13 years ago and then just left for someone else to turn into useful articles. Stub articles are not useful for readers. I've been doing the same as GZ as well, except not to a large scale. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it annoys me when an imported article from Wikitravel with no info what-so-ever and also not being able to delete the article and start afresh. I'll openly admit I used to create stubs in my early days at this site, but much of them are at least usable or deleted as "author request". I have worked on many of them, but I really do not want that to be a reason to create more. Some I would rather have deleted, and those I could not get usable I would still want to delete. Some became useful and nice, even if still short, and I am glad those were created.

This is a cooperative project, and I sometimes get inspired by an outline created by someone else. But I seldom get inspired by a stub created for someone else to convert into a useful article. That is just a frustration I want to get rid of, and improving it is often easier than discussing it at VFD, and has the bonus of sometimes resulting in something useful. The time to do that might be away from projects I would have preferred to work on.

If you cannot write a useful or inspiring outline, then please write on Requested articles, on the talk page of the suggested article or, such as in this case, on the consolidated page. Cf Nidaros Path, where the trails are described to some degree, with separate articles (hopefully) created only as somebody can write at least a good outline on the individual ones.

I think one model could be to use the requested articles page to link to a talk page, where interested parties could discuss whether a certain article is viable, and how to best write it (hopefully with a vision presented right away). Often best structure is not evident – cf Knives or Foraging, where I really cannot envision the useful article. The former should probably be handled in articles like Budget travel, Outdoor life or Equipment (with content consolidated if there ever is enough to worry), the latter broken up among regions.

How we will see unregistered users

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

1850 is a bit much still. Few live for 100 years after they created the work one is interested in. On the other hand, some countries have longer terms (Mexico has 100 years pma), and some base the term on the year of publication (the USA). I rewrote the paragraph trying (in vain?) not to dwell on the more arcane possibilities. There is similar paragraphs in Art and antiques shopping and Modern and contemporary art. I don't know how much we should write, nor how to cross-link the sections. You might want to take a look. –LPfi (talk) 18:59, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

A very real problem is that you may not publish a photo of that 1810s item you bought if it has been inherited in a family, without being publicly exhibited before 2002, when it was sold on an auction (and "published"). Why new disclaimers?

I thought that we had consensus at Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#When to use medical and legal disclaimers? that we generally don't need to add disclaimers. The "shall not be seen as legal advice" phrasing is pure legalese. It's like when you go to the bank for financial advice, pay for it and get it, but they have fine print that underlines that this advice isn't to be seen as advice.

I repeat from the pub thread: "[they] should be restricted to cases where people are likely to do risky things based on our advice." The phrasing in the added disclaimers are like the banks', it doesn't in any way affect how much a reader trusts the article, it just makes us look like we were controlled by a legal department. For legal purposes we have the general disclaimer, linked in the footer.

If we want to warn people, then let's give relevant warnings, such as that the regulations can be changed overnight, and that we haven't done any deeper research.

Thank you for branching off the Mesoamerica article. I hope I'm not being presumptious in adding to it, but I thought it was important to talk about the civilizations (tribes) that make up Mesoamerica, and also to add some sites from Guatemala and Honduras. I would like to add one or more from Belize as well, but I don't think there's one that stands out as far better than the others (none are UNESCO sites, so none seem to have an impartial arbiter advocating for it).
