Template talk:Tout
Purpose
editNext to welcome messages, messages to touts whose edits have been reverted are probably the most common talk page message for new users. Just as we've done with welcome messages, it seems sensible to create a shortcut for tout messages. This template would have two primary benefits:
- It would save time for patrollers who want to use it instead of typing out a long message each time a tout is reverted.
- It standardizes how we deal with touts, ensuring that a tout is given appropriate information to understand and correct his/her behavior.
Per WV:Using Mediawiki templates#New MediaWiki template proposals, discussion and support is required prior to a template being put to wide use, so please edit the proposed text as appropriate, voice any support/concerns, and hopefully we can save our patrollers a few key strokes in the future. -- Ryan • (talk) • 06:03, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- I absolutely support this template and very much appreciate that you created it. I will edit its language slightly. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:41, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- I edited "travelers" to "travellers," because that spelling seems to be used in all Wikivoyage policy pages and such. I also edited out "city" in "the talk page of the article you are trying to edit", because it could be a country, regional, park, or most any other kind of article. If we want to make the message clearer, we could substitute "the talk page of the article where your edit was removed". Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:45, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
- *bump* Anyone else care to comment? I would hope that this template is relatively uncontroversial, and it's something that I would very much like to begin using. -- Ryan • (talk) • 02:04, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
- Given the lack of objection I'm going to remove the experimental tag. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:17, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
- How about renaming the template "Touter" ? --Saqib (talk) 21:50, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
- "Touter" seems like a less obvious name to me, but if others want a change then I have no objection. -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:03, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Don't use {{tout}}
edit- Swept in from the pub
That template does not work. It produces a first line of "Hello, {{subst:PAGENAME}}[sic]!" The pagename does not appear in lieu of the template. To get it right, you must use the full {{subst:tout}}. I've corrected this a few times already and would really prefer not to do so anymore, so please remember to use the right template. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:01, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- We should either fix or delete {{tout}} then if it is causing problems. Ground Zero (talk) 00:48, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
- As I understand, there is nothing wrong with the template. It simply requires the "subst" before it so that it works correctly. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 01:19, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
Template:Tout
edit- Swept in from the pub
On Template:Tout: I don't think that WV:Using talk pages is a talkpage, as is incorrectly stated on said template. I don't want to post this on the talk page, as it doesn't get much attention. Prahlad balaji (talk) 19:36, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- It is usually posted on user talk pages, where the wording makes sense. The text shown on template pages is often less than ideal. I now tweaked this one, but don't expect too much of such "previews".
- Although template talk pages get little attention normally, any edit is seen on Recent changes, which many do follow. Usually a note at any page, with suitable edit summary, gets attention from somebody No problem using this page, though, where more people are likely to read.
- One more tweak to get it right. –LPfi (talk) 20:05, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- LPfi thanks. Prahlad balaji (talk) 20:36, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
