Travel topic listing details edit

Per Wikivoyage:Travel topic article template,

"If you add listings to specific venues, the full listing should go to a destination article. The listing in the travel topic article should describe the venue in the context of the topic, to help the reader to know whether they are interested. Details, such as street addresses, prices and phone numbers, should be omitted from the travel topic article. Instead link the full listing, or the section or article containing it."

I've removed the listings details from the article, ensuring that they are in the city articles. Please don't add any more.

Region articles edit

Region articles should not have detailed listings for points of interest, restaurants, shops, or hotels. Wikivoyage:Region article template says:

"Individual listings should be placed at the lowest available level of local page (a district of a huge city or the city page for a small town)."
"points of interest (such as those mentioned in "See" sections) should not usually have markers in region articles but should be linked to the bottom-level article where they have full listings."

China edit

Thank you for adding information to this article. In some of your changes, you have made errors.

  • In Wikivoyage, we write prices in China articles like this: "¥45", not "CNY45".
  • In China articles, we use the 24-hour clock: we write "09:00-17:00". In countries that use the 12-hour clock, we write: "9AM-5PM". Don't mix the two styles by writing "9:00am-17:00pm". That is confusing. See the box at the top of Talk:China.
  • This article is about Xichang, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China We don't repeat that information in each listing. And Wikivoyage does not include postcodes in listings. You should leave that part out. (See Wikivoyage:Listings.)

Please make these corrections to your work. Thank you.

Moving maintenance tags to talk pages edit

The instructions now say:

"This template can be placed on region articles that have specific listings listed that should be moved to city articles. Usually, this template is placed at the top of a section that contains listings that should be moved. In some situations, it can also be placed at the top of the article." (emphasis added)

Proposal edit

Change the instruction for this template to:

"This template can be placed on region articles that have specific listings listed that should be moved to city articles. Usually, this template is placed on the article's talk page."

The wording of the template would be changed to reflect this from:

This is a region article; detailed listings go in the city articles, district articles, rural area articles or (national) park articles. This section should only be a brief overview.

To:

This is a region article; detailed listings go in the city articles, district articles, rural area articles or (national) park articles. This section article should only be a brief overview.

Rationale edit

Maintenance tags like these are primarily of interest to active contributors. Movingbthe tags to the talk page ensures that they will continue to be listed in maintenance categories such as those listed on Wikivoyage:Community portal.

New or casual readers are unlikely to undertake this work, so these housekeeping tags only add clutter to the articles.

Putting the traveller first, let's move these internal matters out of the articles.

The reality is that these tags lie around in articles for years. The tags on Mountains and Lakes Country were placed in 2014. This is common for these tags. This proposal would improve the user experience of Wikivoyage while maintaining the functionality.

Other tags edit

There are other maintenance tags that could similarly be moved tontalk pages, including:

Ground Zero (talk) 13:15, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Images edit

  1. upload the image locally to Wikivoyage if you want to use it in an article here.
    1. save it from WP to your computer,
    2. then come back to WV, click on upload file in the left sidebar and follow the instructions.
  2. you need to add a disclaimer similar to the one in the file's summary section on Wikipedia.

Description: This is a logo owned by XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Source: The logo is from Wikipedia.

Article: Main Page

Portion used: Full

Low resolution?: This is an SVG vector image of a registered trademark or a copyright-protected logo, seal or computer icon. This image should not be rendered any larger than is required for the purposes of identification and/or critical commentary. The default rendering of this image is of a size and resolution sufficient to maintain the quality intended by the company or organization, without being unnecessarily high resolution.

Purpose of use: The image is placed on the Main Page discussing XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey.

Replaceable?: Because it is a non-free logo, there is almost certainly no free representation. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary.

Other information: Use of the logo in the article complies with Wikivoyage non-free content policy, logo guidelines, and fair use under United States copyright law as described above.

Time formatting edit

Thanks, as always, for your very useful updates on articles. It is easiest for readers if we use one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. There are two used in Wikivoyage -- a 12-hour format (e.g. 9AM-noon, 2PM-6PM), and a 24-hour format (e.g. 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-18:00), and we try to use the format that is used in the country the article is about. This is set out in our style guide, WV:tdf. I hope that helps. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for your very useful updates on articles, including the ones in Alberta articles. We try to make things easier for readers by using one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. In countries that use a 12-hour format, like Canada and the U.S., the format we use is 9AM-noon, 6PM-midnight. For days of the week, we use these standard abbreviations: M Tu W Th F Sa Su. This is set out in our style guide, WV:tdf. I hope that helps. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for your very useful updates on articles. It is easiest for readers if we use one time format per article, rather than changing from one format to another to another through an article. For .... articles, Wikivoyage uses a 12-hour format (e.g. 9AM-noon, 2PM-6PM). We don't use "12PM" and "12AM" because they are ambiguous: some people use them to mean "noon" and "midnight", while other people use them to mean "midnight " and "noon". This is set out in our style guide, WV:time. I hope that helps. Keep up the great work.

Time and date formatting edit

Thank you for your excellent work on Lion's Head article. The Wikivoyage community has chosen time and date formats to make it easier for travellers to find information. Here are some key points from that policy (WV:TDF):

  • Use one of these formats: 09:30–17:00 or 9:30AM–5PM. Do not use both 24- and 12-hour formats within one article. Choose between formats by following predominant local usage. Ask yourself which format visitors will see in timetables, on shop doors and in newspapers.

24-hour format:

  • Use 00:00 for midnight and 12:00 for noon.

12-hour format:

  • Use upper case "AM" and "PM".
  • Use noon and midnight, not 12PM and 12AM.

Days of the week:

  • Abbreviate to the minimum number of letters – M Tu W Th F Sa Su – in lists and where space is short.
  • When combining days with time, put the days first: M–F 10AM–2PM, not 10AM–2PM M–F.

Thanks for your cooperation and for your contributions.
