Hello, Dmartin969! Welcome to Wikivoyage.
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. Britain and Ireland
editYou may want to read through the lengthy discussion at Talk:Europe/Hierarchy#British Isles regarding the naming of the Britain and Ireland article; the current name was the result of several lengthy discussions. -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:31, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
- Some people, including me & both of the site's founders, would say "British Isles" is quite obviously the correct name. However, it does ruffle some feathers & the current name was chosen as a compromise after the discussion linked above. It cannot be changed without another discussion, and I very much doubt starting one is worth the trouble. Pashley (talk) 11:25, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
Language in listings
editHello, and thanks for updating the Omaha guide! Just some quick notes:
It's hard for me to keep track of who did which edits, but if you have a look at this edit, you'll see that I removed a lot of touting language. "Spencer's for Steaks and Chops of Omaha is the ultimate steakhouse restaurant" is the kind of language that's obviously promotional, probably copied directly from the restaurant's website, and has no place on this site. But "an award-winning wine list, exclusive bourbons and single malt scotches" is also not OK, because who gave the claimed award? Was there actually an award, and if so, was it by a reputable organization of professional reviewers, or anonymous posters with no formal qualifications on some website? And what does "exclusive" mean? Nothing useful to readers, I think, unless they're not allowed to buy some of them. Not to belabor things, but I hope you get my point.
Thanks for editing out the naked dollars signs, which we don't use in pricing.
All the best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:17, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- Most of the language used was paraphrased from the either local media or the restaurants' websites themselves. I'll be more carful from now on. Dmartin969 (talk) 08:30, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- I understand. Those can be good sources, and paraphrasing is a good idea, as long as the result is in a Wikivoyage style and tone. Thanks again. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:07, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
Florida "Other destinations"
editHello, Dmartin969, and thanks for your edit to the Florida guide. Just to let you know, Wikivoyage has a guideline abbreviated 7+2, which limits the number of "Cities" and "Other destinations" in non-bottom-level region articles such as those for states to 9 apiece. Of course, there can be good arguments for replacing one listed destination with another, so if you'd like to make such an argument, by all means start a thread at Talk:Florida or add a new post at the end of Talk:Florida#What belongs in the Other destinations section? If not, well, we can't add every destination to an article about a big state, but every destination should be linked from an article for the region it's in.
If you have any questions, please reply below.
Thanks again, and all the best,
Edit in United States of America
editHi. I just want to alert you to this reversion. The reason for it is that this kind of stuff has been discussed ad nauseum on the article's talk page, so it's really best, if you consider it really important to change this kind of content, to explain why on the article's talk page and see if you can attain a consensus. I doubt you could, or that it's worth the time to open such a discussion, but you certainly have the right to do so.
Best,
