Hello, JimDeLaHunt! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. Maple Ridge and Billy Miner Alehouse

edit
Hi. I reverted your 3 listings of the same establishment. Please choose one place to list it in all 3 capacities, and have a look at Wikivoyage's touting policy. Thanks a lot. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:35, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
OK, I coalesced the three listings of Billy Miner Alehouse & Cafe into one under Maple Ridge#Eat. I respect why WV needs a touting policy, but this is one of the cases where I think it doesn't serve Tcf well. Alehouse and cafe have different hours and phone numbers, traveller look under "Eat" and "Drink" separately, etc. But I don't care enough to argue the point hard. JimDeLaHunt (talk) 10:26, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Thanks for trying to work within the guidelines. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:31, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Peace Memorial Museum

edit

Hi! Your changed the day this museum is closed from "Dec 29-Jan 1" to "Dec 30-31". The official site gives the previous information. Are you sure that your source is reliable? I noticed because I update the French page from the English one. Cheers. Fabimaru (talk) 22:23, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Fabimaru, et merci pour votre interesse. I think you might be confusing two different places: the peace memorial museum and the memorial to the atom bomb victims. You gave a URL to the victims memorial. I got my date change information from the museum's Japanese language site. Plus, I was at the museum today. There is a sign in the lobby saying the museum is open on December 29, as an experiment. JimDeLaHunt (talk) 15:44, 28 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Jim, thank you a lot for your answer. I will change the french page accordingly. Fabimaru (talk) 09:00, 1 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your updates, WV:TDF

Jim, thanks for your updates to Bologna and other articles. Wikivoyage uses standard time formatting (for either the 24-hour or 12-hour clock) and standard abbreviations for days of the week. This makes it easier for travellers to read our guides, and gives Wikivoyage a more organized look. I've cleaned up the Bologna article once, but I see you are still using the idiosyncratic time and date formatting. (I've never seen "21:00h" anywhere in the world, and I'm just arriving home from 7 weeks in Italy). Do you think you could follow the standard formats so that others, like me, don't have to clean up your edits? Thanks. Regards, Ground Zero (talk) 02:33, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ground Zero, I appreciate that you noticed my changes to Bologna. I am grateful you pointed me to WV:TDF. I am glad to have good standards to follow, and I'm happy to follow them. I will also clean up my recent Bologna changes to make them follow the standards. One of my difficulties with Wikivoyage is that I started here a long time ago, before some of today's standards were in place, so my habits are old. Another of my difficulties is that I only really pay attention to Wikivoyage when I'm travelling, and have new things to contribute. That means I have little time to make edits, and less time to notice and study new formatting guidelines. But you are making it easier for me to do it right. Thank you. Panajachel

edit

Hello Jim. Do you still work on the Panajachel, Guatemala page? I noticed a lot of businesses and links were kind of defunct, so I tried to update them. I'm new though, so I hope I did it correctly. —The preceding comment was added by Lazarus1255 (talkcontribs) on 05:06, 11 August 2020 (PDT)

Hello Lazarus1255. Thank you for giving me the alert that you are cleaning up the Panajachel page. I have not been there in nearly 15 years, so I have no recent information. Your edits look reasonable to me. I see that you are putting in a great deal of effort to clean up a lot of pages. Thank you for this! One question: what is your source of information about what listings you add? Have you been to all these places you are editing, or are you making changes based on what you find in web searches from home? If you aren't physically there, remember to be careful. Many tourist locations don't have very good web presences. Just because a Guatemalan restaurant has no web page does not mean that the restaurant no longer exists. It may mean that the owner decided a website was more trouble than it was worth, and stopped paying for it. Also, when posting messages on talk pages, remember to end them with four tildes: ~~~~. Wikivoyage converts them into a link to your name and talk page. That how I am ending this message to you. JimDeLaHunt (talk) 00:50, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hello. Thanks for your reply and for the tip - I'm always forgetting about the four tildes. Well, I made changes based on whether there was anything more than just a dated wikitravel or wikivoyage listing when doing internet searches on businesses (i.e. on their names, phone numbers, addresses, etc). If that's all there was and it was from like 10 years ago, and I didn't see any listing on Google Maps, I took it out. Also sometimes the business website or social media page or whatever directly said it had closed. So yeah, that's what I did. I wish I could have gone down there in person, but, being in the fun country of America where I am, I'm pretty much restricted from going anywhere these days. I do see what you're saying though. Thanks very much.Lazarus1255 (talk) 22:42, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, this is a poor time for field research, isn't it! Still, even stuck at home, one can still improve Wikivoyage in ways which put the traveller first. Thank you for your contributions! JimDeLaHunt (talk) 23:00, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Jim! Are you still active on Wikivoyage? Having browsed around some, it seems like there was a league of super travelers and writers who came over from Wikitravel back in 2012 or so but who have kind of dropped off since then. I'm pretty amazed by some of the contributions they and you made to places like Lombok and Panajachel - must have been some investment! Lazarus1255 (talk) 17:15, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I contribute to Wikivoyage when I have something to say, which is when I travel. For some reason, I haven't traveled much since Feb 2020. I don't generally garden in Wikivoyage between trips. At one time, I did, e.g. Washington (state), 2007. Yes, there have been some prolific contributors to Wikivoyage, and earlier to Wikitravel. When a project is new, there is a lot of foundation work to do, and it is very exciting. A mature project can settle into a more relaxed tempo. Be sure you keep your involvement to a level which is fun, and not draining. JimDeLaHunt (talk) 19:49, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wow, I see what you mean about a project - that is nice work that you did on Washington. Very nice. Well, thanks, I'll try to keep your advice in mind - I can see where it could get rather consuming. Is there a forum or chatroom on this website where you can just talk casually or discuss miscellaneous sundry matters (e.g. opinions on where to retire as an expat)? I was trying to see if there was something like that but didn't find it. Lazarus1255 (talk) 20:41, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
For a place to chat, have you visited the Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub yet? JimDeLaHunt (talk) 23:04, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Also, if you don't mind my offering a suggestion, check out Retiring abroad, which is a star article, Retiring abroad/Table, which could be updated, and their talk pages. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:44, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wow, thanks guys! I'm going to have to check it out. Never too early to start. Lazarus1255 (talk) 03:27, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
