Falkland Islands

edit

Hola y bienvenid@ a Wikivoyage 😀 You don't seem to have emails enabled, so I'll reply to your query here and hope you see it.

I've never lived in the Falkland Islands, so can't help you when it comes to local attitudes or customs. Unfortunately I'm not able to answer every question, but I can hopefully shed some light on the subject you're interested in.

Firstly, British law is obviously a model for Falklands law, but just because something is legal or illegal in the UK, doesn't mean the same is true in the Falklands. The BOTs with a resident population are mostly self-governing, so aside from foreign affairs, the UK government doesn't play much of a role in their administration. The Falkland Islands Government passes its own laws on most aspects of local life. Whether they actually have any specific legislation about public nudity, I can't say, but there are a couple of factors that you don't seem to have considered:

  • The Falkland Islands' population is tiny: 3625, according to Google (not counting the military population in RAF Mount Pleasant, which can be up to 2000 personnel at a time). In most countries, naturism is essentially a subculture, and subcultures and remote sparsely-populated areas where everybody knows everyone else don't tend to mix. If you consider the number of people in the world, and estimate what percentage of them are naturists (<0.01%?), then you can fairly assume the number of Islanders interested in naturism is almost certainly in single figures, if indeed there are any.
  • The climate is not at all suitable for naturism. The weather is relatively temperate for the islands' location and can be quite pleasant in the summer if you're dressed appropriately, but the average summer temperatures are still in the low teens, so most nudists wouldn't be very comfortable. However, the main issue is the southern hemisphere's hole in the ozone layer. This makes the ultraviolet count dangerously high for half the year, and this is exacerbated by the Falklands' lack of air pollution. If you're out in the sun, fully clothed, but you forget your hat, the sun's rays will burn your scalp even through your hair. Therefore, you can imagine that anyone who exposes their bare skin for more than a few minutes is going to get painfully sunburnt!

In summary, the very sparse population would make it easy to find a secluded beach to get naked, but you'd be risking your health by doing so. There is almost certainly no local infrastructure that caters for naturist travel, because it's not a safe or sensible place to practice naturism.

I hope I helped. Have a good weekend, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 23:04, 10 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
