Nashville Limo Addition

I was the one who added the limousine (Grand Avenue) listing in the Nashville article. It was a mistake that I had not signed in, and I have made other edits to Nashville. We've had a lot of trouble with limo companies advertising on the site before, and since limo service is of limited use to most travelers we've generally just ended up removing them. If the company you added really is commonly used by travelers in Nashville please go ahead and restore it, but make sure you also restore the company that was there originally that you removed, or at least provide a reason why you are removing it. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 00:11, 4 January 2011 (EST)

Chicago's winters

The original average January high of 29 in Chicago was waaay erroneous. The normal January high temp in Chicago is 12 and the normal low is -5. Also, there is no way for any city to be fully prepared for an ice storm, especially as long as utility lines are strung on poles or on any type of elevated mounting that causes the wires to hang freely above the ground instead of the wires being laid underground. Sedona

Before originally marking the article patrolled I did a search for "Coffee Pot Sedona" to make sure the anon was removing closed restaurants, and I got this result which says "Cee Dee Jamaican Kitchen opened May 15 in the former Duke’s Coffee Pot Cafe at 1070 N. Swan Road.". Looking at that more closely it looks like a different restaurant, so based on your experience I've restored the listing (sorry for the confusion). Yeah that one's in Tucson, many many miles from Sedona. The one in Sedona is named after the Coffee Pot rock, a rock formation just north of the restaurant. As for D'Lish, their new web site is http://www.dlishvegetarian.com/, and from the looks of it they have indeed closed their physical location in Sedona. I do note though that Villa Romaine and Water Puppet Show at Ngon Restaurant share a phone number.

The same user edited all of these listings, and the URL is the same as one of the resort listings. The addresses differ, but given that this user seems to be adding lots of duplicates I may have been a bit heavy handed in copyediting. I have no special knowledge of the destination, hence my reluctance to mess with your edit. Certainly Villa Romaine appears to be part of the 'resort' and is clearly promoted as an in-house restaurant so you are quite correct. I am thinking that the Water Puppet show should probably get the axe as well for the same reasons. It appears to just be a decent quality resort with some good restaurants (and a puppet show) and they should all just go under a single Sleep-Splurge listing..

Halal@Saigon seems to be an entirely separate operation and I think someone has made a mistake with the URL. I finally tracked them down at http://www.halalsaigon.com/ and they are a Malaysian operation set up by some guy called Dr Shimi. On that basis I will put the Halal@Saigon listing back in with an edit to fix the errors asI am assuming the only reason you deleted Halal@Saigon was the common URL.

Split-apartment booker

Hi Ryan, there is a new apartment booking service listing at Split. They have a street address and phone number in Split (although they forgot the street number) and seem to be offering more than a cyber booking service. Split seem to have a few apartment listings already, indeed there is an article section. It looks fairly legit so I tidied up the detail and left it there my edit note reads -- (→Mid range - add to and clarify detail for apartment booking service, correct ph number error, provide street number and email address--bit borderline). Officially any apartment/rental listings must first be discussed on the article's talk page, and there must be some consensus to include an apartment listings section in the article, although in cases where such listings aren't being abused I think most editors here tend to look the other way. Hi Ryan, Please revert your changes to the Pitcairn talk pages. If you need the reasons please email me for a copy of the relevant court order. Wikivoyage is not above the law. I suggest you and I would save a lot of our time on this matter if Wikivoyage had someplace to deliver court orders of this sort. I strongly suggest you start standing up for the small guys of the web by recognizing the issue of cyber-harasment and allowing the courts to sort out who is right and who is wrong. You are not the judge of this issue, but simply a enthusiastic web editor, this is why we have developed a court system in the western world where everyone gets their say and the Judge makes his/her decision. Please do not put yourself above the law.

In every culture there are limits to free speech - yours included, otherwise those willing to tell the biggest lies and with the loudest voices would win any argument. Not a place I would want to live. When I am the subject of blackmail or harassment I do not counter this by harassing my persecutor or by blackmailing them back - or even standing in the middle of the road and shouting abuse at them - but this is what you are condoning in your argument - In the South Pacific we call this rule by the arrogant and aggressive - and it is definitely not part of our culture. Actually this is the right venue, as wikivoyage has no system to take in (and hopefully act on) court orders. In my opinion Wikivoyage will rapidly become a "dog eat dog" world if it stays outside the jurisdiction of the courts. I suggest you avail yourself of the facts of this case. The kangaroo courts of the middle ages worked like wikivoyage - ie made judgments without knowing the circumstances of the situation. By condoning cyber-harassment on wikivoyage you much degrade wikivoyages credibility. So Mr Guillaime, "what would you do to defend yourself and your family from blackmail and harassment dished out on the pages of wikivoyage ?" I really want to know - and to give you a hint, I will not lower myself to use the tactics of those harassing me. Northeast Washington

Hello Ryan. Thanks for your comments regarding the renaming of a Washington State region to "Northeast Washington." At the time, I tried to find the "move" tab, but it was missing. As I haven't done this on Wikivoyage in many years, I was thinking the move tabs were only on Wikipedia. After reading your comments, and looking into this further, I think the problem was being logged out unknowingly. That seems to make the "move" tab disappear. I did log back in before saving, but that's happened many times before, and I didn't think anything of it.

I'm going to go back and redo the name change so the edit history follows the page. The discussion about it is a few years old, and its original name "Rocky Mountains (Washington)" was never debated or explained at all. The first person to propose all the regions came up with it, and somehow it was never changed. The problem is Wikipedia and other sources clearly indicate the Rocky Mountain range does not extend westward into Washington State. There are two different smaller mountain ranges in this region, but their names are not widely known.

Nusa Lembongan

Hi Ryan, as you have recently performed some edits on the Nusa Lembongan article perhaps you might like to give your opinion on a recent edit I have made there. Over time I have been growing a little concerned at the apparent incremental acquisition of other listings by one operator Victory Shine. Although it is of course quite possible that all the now 9 properties are becoming consolidated under single ownership or management control the operators have not been leaving edit notes or explanation on the article discussion page. Email addresses show multiple anomalous issues as do phone and fax numbers. I have given a fairly thorough explanation of this on the article discussion page. Perhaps you could look it over an let me know if you think the action is appropriate. They may have their own perfectly good reasons for using a mix of yahoo and gmail email addresses rather than their own domain name based email address, and their own reasons for not listing all of their properties on their own website however quite frankly I think they are having a lend of us. I hope my recent direct contact with them and subsequent edits to 8 of the 9 listings may motivate some explanation from them. Perhaps you could look it over an let me know if you think the action is appropriate. Saw your comment on the article talk page. Germany does have its own official disambiguation system which is even used on road signs e.g. Winsen (Aller). In the case of this particular Bergen, they use "Bergen (Landkreis Celle)" which is not particularly elegant! Most are better than that. Can you please explain how consensus works in relation to having sites removed from the blacklist. I have said previously that we have no desire to be promoted on wikivoyage, merely to be removed from the blacklist directory as is potentially damaging to our business. I note this page is locked (understandably) and cannot see that without administrative assistance that we will ever be removed from the list.

I would suggest leaving a message either in the Pub or on Project:Requests for comment asking people to respond to your arguments for blacklist removal at Project:Local spam blacklist#Various Car Hire Agencies. If people don't respond to that request you can make a few repeated requests, but be aware that it's not generally easy to get on the blacklist, but once on it there generally needs to be a pretty strong argument made in order to get off, and I'm not sure that "we're better now" will be sufficient to convince many contributors here. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 10:57, 25 August 2011 (EDT)

Malaysia-related block

Hi, Wrh2. I see you blocked unregistered user 217.115.137.222 for 1 week. Of course, I understand why and sympathize. However, blocking that IP is not likely to be useful, because that IP was used only once. The troll who posts to the Malaysia article uses various IPs (for example: 87.225.253.173, 83.170.92.9, 199.48.147.36, 199.48.147.42, 122.102.100.161, and 74.3.165.39) as you can see from the history[6] of the article (I would speculate that these are different public computers in an internet or computer centre of some kind). So if you want to protect the article from trolling, the only thing to do is bar unregistered users from editing it for a period of time. Meanwhile, 217.115.137.222 should be reinstated because there has been only one post from that IP, and for all I (we?) know, it could be one computer in an otherwise innocent computer centre somewhere.

My thought was to just start applying one week blocks for whatever IP posts that garbage since it's been going on for a while, just as we apply 3 month blocks to spambot IP addresses - the user in question has used the same IP address a few times, so my hope is that they may have a limited range of computers that they're using. It's possible that this would snare an innocent user, but the odds are pretty low given the number of IP addresses in the world. As to protecting the article, that's another option but we get a LOT of anonymous edits to the Malaysia article and it would be a shame to lose them due to one persistent troll. I agree that it's a shame to have to protect an article. If you would like, maintain this block, but if the troll posts from another IP, I think at that point, it would be advisable to lift the block on this IP and protect the article from edits by unregistered users for a period of time. Buffalo Eats Deletion Explained

I'm new to wikivoyage; and so, I really don't know the in-and-outs yet. Is there a place to explain a deletion without commenting in the actual article? Anyways, here is the reason. The portion deleted asserts that "beef on weck" is pronounced "beef on wick". Well, it's not. A native of Buffalo and having worked throughout the food industry here, I can confidently tell you that no one pronounces it "wick" - and I do mean no one. I've taken orders from literally hundreds of people for this meal, and I have never-ever even once heard anyone pronounce it that way. I don't know from where this misinformation comes, but it is just that: misinformation. Maybe somewhere else in the country people might call it that; but in Buffalo (where the dish originated), it certainly is not pronounced that way. So, my edit stands, and I shall redo it again. I won't claim to be from Buffalo, but I grew up close enough to see beef on weck on menus and hear it pronounced. I didn't write the original phrasing into the article, but I concur with its interpretation of the pronunciation. It is pronounced "wick". Is the site screwed up?

Hey, are you still around? Is the site as screwed up for you as it is for me? My recent changes shows nothing until I click on a different number of changes to display, and then it loses my preferences. And the edit box of any edit page has shrunk down to only 2 lines tall. Hi Ryan. I occasionally feel compelled to prompt a delete of these things myself as sometimes they do sit there for a while. I am sure you are not at this 24/7 and you appear to be the one who clears a significant volume of this rubbish. I only put the detail on the deletion page as the policy dictates this should be done. I am happy to just apply a {{vfd}} and either blank or delete the content is it is obnoxious or silly enough to justify it. If my efforts in doing this are creating extra work for you (or someone else) in clearing the {{vfd}} then let me know and I will just leave them there. Likewise if I do not need to detail the {{vfd}} on the deletions page then I am happy not to. I recall Ikan complained about me doing that just after he got admin buttons as maybe he just thought I was posting them there for no reason. It only creates extra work for me if I list them on the deletions page when they are so obviously spam. As you are aware I do not have admin access here so I cannot delete them myself, otherwise I would be pleased to do so. Just let me know if I should just ignore articles and user pages containing spam and other rubbish completely as I would rather not do it at all if it is not useful to the project. Frankly I would rather just watch birds flying past my window than unnecessarily spend my time detailing reasons to delete a penis enhancement spam page. Also I do not really need any extra opportunities to bear further subtle chiding and derision from a few fellow editors here who apparently think some of my activities on WT are less than appropriate. Thanks Ryan, I will ensure that I only touch them is they have been up for over 24hr. I will continue to assume it is correct to list the detail on the deletions page if I apply a {{vfd}} unless you advise otherwise. I do appreciate the clarification.

What should I do if I come across something that is really astoundingly offensive, should I just leave it, or should I blank it and apply a {{vfd}}. If so then I am back in a circle unless I then list it on the deletions page. Should I just ignore it even if it is something really over the top. The world will certainly not stop turning if something stays there for an extended time but I would like to do something about it if it is something really nasty.
