User page on es:
Just out of curiosity, why did you create es:Benutzer:Wrh2? I figure it must have been a mistake? "Benutzer" is not a valid namespace on es:, and you already made es:Usuario:(WT-es) Wrh2... (WT-en) texugo 23:53, 17 January 2012 (EST)
- Dammit. I'm not sure what happened - I've recreated that page at its proper location (German Wikivoyage - de:Benutzer:(WT-de) Wrh2). Please delete the page on es:, and sorry for the confusion. -- Ryan • (talk) • 00:58, 18 January 2012 (EST)
linking to wikimedia commons ogg pronunciation files
is it forbidden? because my link in Çorlu article was removed by you. if it is forbidden, should i upload the same file to wikivoyage?--(WT-en) MesterSlagteren 19:55, 20 January 2012 (EST)
- Wikivoyage:Image policy#Other media and Project:External links#What not to link to provide some guidance on the subject, but the short answer is that links to audio guides and use of audio files is something that the Wikivoyage community decided not to encourage. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:13, 20 January 2012 (EST)

hello am i doing something that is forbidden by adding my company to wiki org...it was on here for quite a while in the past and in the recent months i have seen that it keeps getting removed. we are a real company, registered and licensed. what am i doing that is breaking the guielines?! —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) ManitiExpeditions (talk • contribs)
- Please read Project:Don't tout. As that guideline indicates, if you replace another listing with your own or move your listing to the top then it will likely be removed. Also, if you add a listing that is not in English it will definitely be removed as this is the English version of Wikivoyage - other language versions of the site are available for contributions in languages other than English. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:34, 21 February 2012 (EST)
hello ryan can you please explain why my listing was removed a while back. I originally listed it in 2009 and it stayed up there for a while for some reason it was removed. —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) ManitiExpeditions (talk • contribs)
- An anonymous user removed the listing [2] with the comment "Deleted Maniti Camp Expeditions, probably a fake tour company due they copy and paste someone else profile's and change contact information.". -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:10, 27 February 2012 (EST)
Ryan I believe that one of my competitors had deleted my listing and then replaced my listing with their own (Amazon Expeditions). When I had made my original listing I was on top and I had not noticed that my listing had been deleted to quite a while after and while. Can you give me the authorization to put my listing back on top? or can you do this for me please? —The preceding comment was added by (WT-en) ManitiExpeditions (talk • contribs)
- Since your interest in Wikivoyage seems to be primarily motivated by a desire to market a specific company you will find the answer to most of your questions in Wikivoyage's guidelines on marketing. If you still have questions you can ask them on that article's talk page or in the Pub. -- Ryan • (talk) • 20:12, 27 February 2012 (EST)
The images are not copyrighted and are obtained after an agreed release from a third party/ or personal shoot. Its only that I am building a resource for my city but you keep removing stuff. I have clearly seen and understood the upload warning
Craiqzkriz
Hi Ryan, somehow the block of Craiqzkriz doesn't work. Do you have know why? (WT-en) Jc8136 04:16, 16 March 2012 (EDT)
- What do you mean by "doesn't work"? A blocked user won't be able to edit or move any pages, with the one exception of their own talk page. If a blocked spambot spams its talk page multiple times I usually protect the talk page from further edits with a note indicating it was protected due to ongoing spam. -- Ryan • (talk) • 10:57, 16 March 2012 (EDT)
Infinite duration blocks
My concern with the policy for infinite blocks is that most administrators are not unchecking the "Automatically block the last IP address used by this user" option – and since most of the spambots are not on long-term fixed connections, that's effectively putting in an infinite block on whatever unfortunate innocent user might get that address in the future. I've certainly set anonymous IP address blocks where a review of the edit history shows a spammer/vandal in 2012, but then a few legitimate contributions to something utterly unrelated in 2008, and I would prefer to avoid blocking legitimate would-be contributors when that order is reversed.
Since temporarily blocking a spammer's address is genuinely useful, and since I've seen very few spambot accounts come back for more later (only the ones that try recreating their User_talk: pages, I think), a generic three-month block with the IP address blocking turned on seems like a good compromise. Infinite blocks, to me, are only ever a valid option with "block last IP" turned off. — (WT-en) D. Guillaime 19:34, 17 March 2012 (EDT)
- Inas did some testing on this and it looks like the underlying IP is not being permanently blocked - see the thread at Project:Travellers' pub#Spambots. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:41, 17 March 2012 (EDT)
- Oh, that's good to know. Objection withdrawn! — (WT-en) D. Guillaime 19:56, 17 March 2012 (EDT)
Hi Ryan, i have seen your comments above and was thinking about to start the empty skeletons. It's an UK IP address with someone trying to reshape our Pakistan structure. Shall we block him for one day to get his attention and start the cleaning process? (WT-en) Jc8136 11:27, 27 March 2012 (EDT)
- I've tried 10 minutes blocks during times that he/she was editing with a pointer to User talk:212.121.219.1 without any result. It seems like either the user is ignoring the talk page messages or isn't comfortable with English, and if that's the case then I'm not sure if a longer block would help. I'm stumped on what to do here - the user has obviously put in some effort, but that effort is just creating additional work for everyone else who contributes to this site. If you've got additional ideas they would be appreciated! -- Ryan • (talk) • 11:39, 27 March 2012 (EDT)
- I worked over Pakistan articles and edits for the last couple years (see the talk page of the main article and the Stay safe issues...) Usually its guys in the UK or Pakistan trying to improve and don't understand our policy. Usually a longer block with a clear message/link helped to engage. Nevertheless we need to start the clean-up, otherwise inexperienced user start to use the newly created articles and then it gets messy! (WT-en) Jc8136 11:48, 27 March 2012 (EDT)
IP Block
Hello -- please fix what appears to be a typo in an IP block you made "20:27, 26 March 2012, Wrh2 (Talk | contribs) blocked 216.66.128.0/18 (Talk) (expires 20:27, 2 April 2012, anon. only, account creation blocked) (Repeated vandalism)" you have a slash where a period ought to be. Thank you,--(WT-en) IBobi 15:47, 29 March 2012 (EDT)
- Did you intend this to be a range block? In that case, they should be much more brief than this; we're talking hours, not weeks.--(WT-en) IBobi 15:56, 29 March 2012 (EDT)
- The block was listed at Project:User ban nominations#216.66.128.0/18 for discussion and comment in accordance with policy. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:41, 29 March 2012 (EDT)
- Fair enough ;)--(WT-en) IBobi 19:21, 29 March 2012 (EDT)
Ocean Spray Hotel
Hi,
I am wondering why did you delete that page?
64.134.30.249 18:35, 10 April 2012 (EDT)
- Articles about individual businesses are subject to speedy deletion per Project:What is an article and Project:Deletion policy. If you'd like to list a hotel simply click on the "add listing" link in the "Sleep" section of Miami Beach/Mid Beach, Miami Beach/South Beach or Miami Beach/North Beach (whichever of those three is appropriate for the hotel's location). See Project:Where you can stick it for guidelines on what should go into each article section. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:39, 10 April 2012 (EDT)

KK to Brunei in a day Merge
Why did you request that Kota Kinabalu to Brunei in a day be merged with Malaysia? It refers to a specific route in a very specific part of Malaysia and does not make sense as a part of the overall country page. Per Wikivoyage's guidelines on what qualifies as a page, this seems a proper itinerary.

Best Western Plus Siding 29 Lodge on the Banff page
Hi Ryan, thanks for the corrections on capitalization. I changed the hotel name back from "Best Western" to our legal name of "Best Western Plus Siding 29 Lodge". This is consistent with wiki policy as it is our actual legal name. Thanks --(WT-en) BanffABHotel 20:32, 17 April 2012 (EDT)
Holiday Inn Houston
Hi, just curious why you keep deleting the Holiday Inn Houston - Reliant Park listing. I am keeping the listing in line with the other hotels listed on that page, and don't mean to be doing anything against the rules. What do I need to do to list the hotel properly?
indiarailinfo.com
Hello,
This website is the most useful for travellers in Indian railways. Why removing it? (WT-en) Yann 15:53, 24 April 2012 (EDT)

The Super Shredder
Over the past year or two, you have put in a tremendous effort towards cleaning up this site, in terms of getting rid of orphaned, /en hosted images of dubious origin and utility, outline itineraries and topics, devising new methods of getting rid of other dead weight, and generally streamlining our operations. Thanks! --(WT-en) Peter Talk 20:54, 25 April 2012 (EDT)
Hi Ryan, I am very unconvinced concerning this content introduced into the Bali article. I have edited the recent reinstatement of the content however I note it was previously removed and has returned, still with a touty emphasis. I have not seen the publication so it is difficult to assess the appropriateness of the content in a travellers context. I have left a note on Ikan's talk page as well as I know he has also been working on some corrective edits associated with Anand Ashram and (WT-en) Anand Ashram's previous contributions. I am also a little curious about Adisucipta and obviously the new contributions in the reading section of the Bali article raises the question of who Adisucipta and Anand Ashram are, and if indeed they are the same contributor. Both IK and I have left a note on Anand Ashram's talk page, doesn't seem to have had much effect though. I have also recently been editing Anand Ashram content in the Jakarta, Ubud and Bogor articles. -- (WT-en) felix 08:17, 9 May 2012 (EDT)
- It looked like an advertisement to me the first time I removed it - the book was published in 2010 as far as I can tell and is not available on Amazon, so it can't be a "must read". I've seen that ashram a few times before while patrolling, so it looks to me like a promotional addition. -- Ryan • (talk) • 10:45, 9 May 2012 (EDT)
- I agree completely and fully support your removal of the listing. -- cheers-- (WT-en) felix 22:31, 9 May 2012 (EDT)

Re:UNESCO
Thanks Ryan. I just noticed the page as well! Not off to a great start. It seems the "Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad" site in Algeria has been incorrectly placed near Bechar in the west of the country, when it is meant to be in the north, according to official information: [3]. Also, do you know how the information about heritage sites are meant to be presented? The Expedition mentions creating articles for each site, although the Wikivoyage's policy is destination articles only. (WT-en) JamesA >talk 00:44, 29 May 2012 (EDT)
- I don't think the expedition has seen attention in some time, although it was quite active for a while. As to how sights should be presented on Wikivoyage, Project:What is an article is probably the best guide - if a UNESCO site is an attraction such as the Statue of Liberty it should be added as a listing within the appropriate article, but if the site is a park or town (quick rule: can you sleep there) such as Yellowstone National Park then it definitely gets its own article. For borderline cases you can always just start a discussion in the Pub or on the appropriate region article talk page. -- Ryan • (talk) • 00:58, 29 May 2012 (EDT)
- Thanks for the guidance. Many of the sites are borderline, located in the middle of deserts with no signs of civilisation in sight. Instead of starting dozens of discussions, I'll resolve on placing them in the article of the closest settlement, even if it is 20km away. I also think that the articles that are about UNESCO sites (or have one in their "See" section) should include a small template. It could display a small UNESCO logo in the corner, to let readers know there is a UNESCO site at the destination, and also help with adding categories, further organising the articles. It's fairly minor, so I might just go ahead and add it as I clean up the articles. (WT-en) JamesA >talk 02:37, 29 May 2012 (EDT)
Japan Travel Guide
Hi Ryan. Could you please give more information about why FindJPN was removed from the Tokyo travel guide's Do section? personally didn't think I was touting or incorrectly listing a tour, but rather just providing information. Is there any way the wording could be updated for the information to remain? Thanks!

Jani's repetitive links
Jani has continued to post inappropriate links to the competing fork discussion, and has now added one to his personal blog at http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Wikivoyage:Travellers%27_pub#Moving_to_Wikimedia. I'd like to remove those 3 links. Will you support?--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 13:38, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- I'm going to stay out of it. I'm personally uncomfortable with using Wikivoyage as a platform for discussing a fork (I think it's impolite towards IB), but at the same time the discussion is relevant to everyone who has volunteered thousands upon thousands of hours creating the site's content. Additionally, there isn't any precedent for censoring discussions that are relevant to travel/Wikivoyage - the Project:External links policy is meant to discourage promotion but not discussion, so (for example) while a link to Tripadvisor is inappropriate in an article, it would not be inappropriate if discussing whether or not a description of that hotel was fair or not. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:55, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- What about links to a user's personal blog?--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 15:13, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- I'd really prefer to stay out of this argument, as it seems like a conflict of corporate interest vs. community interest. If a fork is a bad idea then it should be simple to refute any suggestion that one be considered, but instead the focus seems to be more on killing any discussion of the matter, something I'm not at all comfortable with. -- Ryan • (talk) • 16:20, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- The area we're getting into is Wikivoyage project vs Wikivoyage site. They are distinct, but with massive overlap. The administrators of the project may see benefit in a discussion about moving elsewhere, but the site is under no obligation to host a discussion about harming itself. Until now, WT policy has been sufficient in most regards to govern both situations. It appears this may no longer be the case. I am not certain that project policy even applies in this case, as it has not been broached since WV, and then it was clearly not sufficiently investigated.--(WT-en) IBobi talk email 17:29, 12 July 2012 (EDT)

Spambot blocking
I noticed that you changed my block settings for User:Jt3b6q5v4v. It's hard for me to figure out how, though. Did I do something wrong? The form is different post-upgrade, and I'm less sure that I understand the ramifications of the different check boxes as well as I did before. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 18:43, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
- I opened the block page in one of many tabs while reviewing edits and apparently finally got to the tab and "blocked" the user after you had already done so. I think it was just an overlap - sorry. -- Ryan • (talk) • 18:46, 12 July 2012 (EDT)

Bot flag for User:Thehelpfulbot
Hi Ryan,
If you are able to, please could you also grant User:Thehelpfulbot, a bot account run by me a bot flag? If you have a look at the contributions you can see an example of a task that I wish to run.
Thanks, Thehelpfulone 19:21, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
- Since it was running, and since you've noted that it runs elsewhere on Wikipedia, and furthermore since the site is in dire need of a lot of simple cleanups I've flagged it as a bot, but I've also noted it at Wikivoyage:Script nominations#Thehelpfulbot so that anyone who wishes to can raise any concerns. At the old site bots tended not to be used extensively for legacy reasons, but now that Wikivoyage is running on an up-to-date Mediawiki version I suspect that our script approval processes will need to be modernized. -- Ryan • (talk) • 19:25, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

XML dumps of other languages
Hi, if I understood this mailing list post correctly, you seem to have XML dumps of some Wikitravel language editions. As it was mentioned in following posts of the mailing list, new wikivoyage subdomains can be created from the dumps if they are made avaiable. Would this be possible? - I'm an importer for new wikimedia projects, so I'm trying to move this forward. I have created incubator:Incubator:Wikivoyage import to get an overview of the possible languages, maybe you can have a look into it :) --MF-Warburg (talk) 01:08, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
