Safety edit

The article says "It is safest to stay in your hotel and avoid the streets in Abuja unless you have an escort." I have to disagree. Abuja is not at all unsafe, certainly not compared to other cities such as Lagos. (WT-en) Riki 13:28, 22 June 2007 (EDT)

No direct flights US to Abuja edit

The article says Delta has a direct flight to Abuja, but as far as I can find no airlines offer direct flight from the US to Abuja. The delta route goes via Accra http://news.delta.com/index.php?s=20295&item=123836

Districts of Abuja edit

There has been no proposal to create district articles for Abuja that's been brought up here for discussion. As things stand, there is not so much content in this article that we need such articles yet. However, articles were just started for Jahi‎ and Maitama. Why shouldn't they be merged and redirected here? User:Lordgentual, a penny for your thoughts. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:19, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ikan Kekek Thanks for the ping. I saw two articles on Abuja district (Garki and Gwarinpa) and I felt I could start creating districts on Abuja. I also feel this districts are needed cause they are popular places and they have interesting places. If you still feel they should be merged, then please feel free to do so. Compliments of the season.

Those two articles how too much information to be merged into Abuja -- Garki has 19 listings, and Gwarinpa has 23. (Great work by Lordgentual.) I think they should remain separate from the rest of the city so that the city article is not focused too much on these two districts. Jahi‎ and Maitama just repeat information available in the Abuja article at the moment, but if more information is added, then they should be separate, too. We do have to discuss how you organize the articles. Should Abuja be split into districts like Lagos is? Ground Zero (talk) 20:42, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Same to you! Would you please post a proposal on this talk page of how you would divide this city into districts, where the boundaries would be, and about how many listings there would be in each article? Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:01, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Ground Zero for the observation. I actually plan on building up those articles (Jahi and Maitama) with unique listings different from Abuja own.
Lordgentual (talk) 21:07, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Why is Gwarinpa not Abuja/Gwarinpa, and why is it not mentioned in Abuja#Districts? We need a complete list of districts in that section. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:17, 23 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Upgrade to Guide status? edit

This is a well-developed article which meets many of the criteria for guide status; see Wikivoyage:Guide articles. Should we upgrade, or is anything missing? /Yvwv (talk) 00:34, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

No – many listings are missing coordinates, contact info, descriptions. Just no. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 02:57, 6 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Districts and the CBD edit

I've tried to make some mapshapes of Abuja for the new districts created by Lordgentual. However, it seems that they did not get around to creating further districts, and now Abuja only remains partially districtified (if that's a word). Based on OSM data, it seems the only major district that is missing is the CBD (central business district for those that don't know what CBD means) though these are the districts that don't have their own articles:

  • CBD
  • Gudu (this can possibly be combined with Durumi and be renamed to Abuja/Gudu and Durumi)
  • Maitama (currently redirects here)
  • Kukwaba (though there doesn't seem to be much in this district, and can probably be combined with Gudu and Durumi.)
  • all districts west of A234 except for Jahi – we can rename this to Abuja/West of A234 or Abuja/West if we don't want to create an article for each of the districts
  • Guzape

However, at the moment, the only district urgently needed to finish the incomplete districts mess is the CBD according to this map as we have articles for all the other "inner districts". Any other comments before Abuja/CBD is created? And should the title be called "Abuja/CBD" or "Abuja/Central Business District"? CBD is a common abbreviation in Singapore and Australia, but all Nigerian websites seem to spell it out in full. If unsure, I think we should just go with Abuja/Central Business District. After the CBD is sorted out, I will try and figure out how to cleanup the other districts. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 12:20, 20 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Religious undertone edit

Being a religiously diverse city, isn't it nicer to have a neutral symbol as a key image for the city rather than the state-of-the-art Abuja National Mosque? Kambai Akau (talk) 08:05, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

We don't have the mosque there because we favour one religion over another, but we have the mosque as the key image because it's symbolic for the city and is a beautiful site that works well as a lede image. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:14, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Right. But that said, we have no other images in the article except for the pagebanner. Kambai Akau, if you see other useful images of the city on Wikimedia Commons or would like to take more good photos of Abuja and upload them to Commons, please add more thumbnails. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:25, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000, quite understood. I do like the design of the mosque too. But as much as possible, let's be neutral in the selection of images as symbols have deeper connotations than we might originally think or don't think they do. @ Ikan Kekek, sure. Abuja has a lot of imageries already uploaded to Commons. I would add more thumbnails to the article from the existing ones and possibly upload more to Commons with time. Thanks. Kambai Akau (talk) 08:50, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
If you think more images of other religious buildings should be added, then by all means, add it. But I don't think removing one of the city's most iconic buildings just because it has religious connotations gives an impression of what the city is like for travellers. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 09:02, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
If there is some iconic view that would work as lead image, then the mosque could be moved down to See. A city planned to be the capital should have some place like the National Mall in Washington, USA (something like Capitol from top of Washington Monument.JPG, although I'd hope for a better image). However, I found no good lead images for Abuja with a quick search on Commons. I wouldn't try to get neutrality by adding churches – that would make it seem like that you visit the city for religious buildings. –LPfi (talk) 09:37, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000, Adding churches wouldn't make any sense either, because, as LPfi thinks, I don't know if one would visit a city for religious buildings when Mecca, Rome and Jerusalem still exist. We have beautiful sites in Abuja good enough to occupy the space, though. I could see some, but I wouldn't want to remove the image of the mosque myself. If I can share some with you here, maybe you could check them up. One of them is the city gate and the other, the Zuma Rock. Those are the two main symbols of Abuja which when Nigerians see, they know what they mean. The Zuma Rock was notable enough to get to the N100 note, right? Just thinking. Kambai Akau (talk) 10:20, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
If you think the Zuma Rock would make a better lede image, by all means add that too. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 10:24, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
The mosque has been replaced by the National Assembly as lead image, and I think something like that is good for a capital. I don't see a problem with having the mosque in See as now, but certainly, the Zuma Rock should be added if there is a good image available. I did so now. I think the images are OK now, but there is room for more. –LPfi (talk) 11:22, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yeah @LPfi, thanks. It looks great. Regards. Kambai Akau (talk) 12:50, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
