This route can be portrayed in many ways, which banner do you prefer that we'll use on the top of this article? SHB2000 (talk) 10:01, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Could you possibly let us see what these will look like as banners? At least on my screen, they're not showing in the right dimensions when I click on them twice. (Also, small thing: We haven't been using the "Draft" heading on articles here; the usual procedure is either to start drafts in your Sandbox and then move them to articlespace or just start the article and develop it under the same name.) Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:05, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I didn't want to start it instantly as I have little knowledge on this topic. User:Vaticidalprophet has also begun doing most of the work here while I'm just adding the towns here. SHB2000 (talk) 10:41, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm inclined to support the current banner. With regards to draftspace vs userspace vs mainspace, I'll defer to "Wikivoyage doesn't do draftspace", but will note it's a bit awkward to decide whose userspace a collaborative article goes into. I also might want to rename the article at some point, as I'm envisioning this as potentially a general overland-travel article including non-car overland routes. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 10:44, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's not a problem to rename articles. It might reassure you to consider all articles on this site works in progress, which is true. No article is likely to ever be complete for all time. That said, it's not a problem, either, for someone to start a draft in their sandbox and invite others to also help edit there. SHB2000 and Vaticidalprophet: About pagebanners, please read Wikivoyage:Banner Expedition#Image size and following, if you have not already done so. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:49, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've mocked up this quick banner -- it's not spectacular, but Commons didn't have a ton of offerings. I may go looking to see if there are any good depictions of the Overland train or similar, if a non-car image proves more banner-friendly. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 11:00, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Whichever is chosen, it needs to be cropped to a ratio of 7:1 as Ikan pointed out above, I didn't notice... --Ypsilon (talk) 11:53, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I did a 2100:300 proposal for that reason, yeah. Vaticidalprophet (talk) 12:12, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Please don't choose the last one. The sign itself has incorrect info there. SHB2000 (talk) 12:31, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────What information on the sign is inaccurate? Vaticidalprophet (talk) 13:55, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

It has Western Hwy on it, not Western Fwy. SHB2000 (talk) 22:04, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Only the new proposal at the bottom is correctly sized. In order for us to be able to compare the other banners, please make sure to resize them appropriately. Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:32, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I was thinking if we could make a banner of a scenic location along the coastal route. Sure, you can go the most direct route that takes 8 hours, but going along the coast is way more scenic and more attractive to travellers. I have personally done two route; the Princes Highway, and the coastal route via the Coorong, the Limestone Coast and the Great Ocean Road. Perhaps a banner of some of the coastal cliffs along the Limestone Coast would be nice for this itinerary. The dog2 (talk) 21:43, 28 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

re. edit summary

edit

@Ground Zero: The reason the article doesn't yet mention a driving time is that it's significantly different for each route. (And while "8 hours" is often quoted in Wikivoyage for the Dukes/Western route, my experience is that 10 is a more realistic minimum.) Vaticidalprophet (talk) 13:56, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

So what would be useful is to give approximate driving times for each of the routes. Driving times on Google maps are expressed as driving time-only, so that's why I specified for the Dukes/Western route "over 8 hours without stops". As the local expert, it would great if you could elaborate on that.
I want to drive that route some day. When I see Google maps say "8 hours", I then factor in stops for photos, walks, lunch, and know that I won't drive that in a day, but that we vary depending on how the reader likes to travel. We can't factor in those differences, but we can help by providing an estimate of the driving time on the road.
The map only shows the Dukes/Western route so far, so I figured that that would be a good place to start. As the article is developed, I really think that minimum driving times for other routes are important to include. Ground Zero (talk) 14:20, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
By the time you come, the time will be even quicker as more parts of the Western Highway will be dual carriageway. SHB2000 (talk) 03:46, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Distance

edit

Isn't the distance around 680km?

There's this (also the sign that Vaticidalprophet has shown above). that shows 668km which is still in Melbourne. Why does the article say 725km??? SHB2000 (talk) 22:10, 20 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Google maps says 726 km, which I assume is CBD to CBD. Maybe 680 km is city border to city border? But if you think it is more accurate, change it. Ground Zero (talk) 04:23, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
So the distances were correct. I was measuring it from Melton to Adelaide CBD. SHB2000 (talk) 05:23, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
The sign pictured is in Hopetoun Park, which is about 50km out of Melbourne (and I think this may also explain your Highway vs Freeway nitpick). Vaticidalprophet (talk) 05:42, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Here's a map of the scenic route. [1]

Does this article need a .json track marker?

edit

@Vaticidalprophet, The dog2: You'd think it's worth having one of those marker lines here (which is used in other articles like Tourist Drive 33 or Stuart Highway)? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:33, 29 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
