Terms & links edit

Is "American Indian" the right term? My impression is that the usual terms now are "Native American" in the US and "First Nations" in Canada. Are those more respectful terms which should be used? Or politically correct silliness? My guess is both, so we should use them.

This should certainly link to Indigenous cultures of North America, & vice versa. Possibly to other things like Navajo Nation.

I support a name change not just because of respectfulness or political correctness but also to avoid ambiguity and a potential mix-up with "Indian American cuisine" (a cuisine that recent immigrants from India have brought to the country). I agree with your other suggestions too. Gizza (roam) 03:54, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Support using more respectful terms. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 03:56, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
However, in its current state, there is nothing useful for travelers and I would also support a merge with American cuisine. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 03:57, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Native Americans in opinion polls have stated that either term is fine, though not generic "Indian." The reason to change the term is clarity, not respect, but I think the questions of content and whether this should be a separate article are more relevant, though they're trumped by the fact that an apparent block-evader starter the article, and therefore, it needs to be deleted. Broaden scope? edit

Should the title be "Indigenous cuisine of North America"? Certainly Canadian Indians have similar foods to those in the US & it is not clear if the current title includes them. The Inuit (Eskimo) have other foods; the ones I know talk about "country food" meaning things like caribou and seal. Should that be covered here? I'd say yes since it will interest some travellers & I doubt there is enough material for a separate article.

Or broader yet? "Indigenous cuisine of the Americas"? Pashley (talk) 04:10, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Indigenous cuisine of the Americas sounds interesting. Essentially the pre-Columbian foods of the entire Western Hemisphere. I think it's a good starting point and we can narrow it down and split it into North and South if the article gets long. Gizza (roam) 04:13, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be better if we integrated it in the relevant country's cuisine article (such as American cuisine, Mexican cuisine, Argentine cuisine or Brazilian cuisine), since the purpose of our cuisine articles is to also highlight where instead of just what like Wikipedia does. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 04:20, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
