Scott Base

edit

I think it makes more sense to cover the (tiny) 3 km away Scott Base as part of this article. What do you think? Hobbitschuster (talk) 01:53, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

If you don't think it has enough potential content for its own article, by all means go ahead! Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:11, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
We could include Scott Base, but where from? Selfie City (talk) 03:34, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
This article currently contains a redlink to it. You can grab some POIs from the Wikipedia pages. Hobbitschuster (talk) 20:20, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hobbitschuster, there's actually another possibility. The two bases are very close to each other (especially for Antarctica standards!), so we could move this article to Ross Island (Antarctica) and then include both bases in that article. That would also make sense when you consider that Mount Erebus is probably an important destination for both McMurdo and Scott Base. Selfie City (talk) 20:31, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I think McMurdo is the better known "place" than Ross Island. But I may be wrong. I for one have heard of McMurdo as the "overrun hub of Antarctica" where a bunch of Americans congregate with a bunch of scientists in the summer. Hobbitschuster (talk) 20:33, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Of course, we'd make McMurdo and McMurdo Station a redirect to Ross Island. Selfie City (talk) 20:35, 18 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Actually, I think I got the wrong end of the selfie stick in this discussion. You wanted to include information about Scott Base here. Selfie City (talk) 14:42, 19 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I added a listing in the "go next" section... Hobbitschuster (talk) 17:40, 19 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Transantarctic Mountains

edit

I don't think they should be included here. They're about 1000 kilometres away from the station, and realistically, no traveller visiting McMurdo Station would visit it while at the town. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 02:14, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's quite far! Where should they be listed? Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:06, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'll move it to Ross Ice Shelf. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 03:12, 1 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
This has created a rump page with not much in it, because there's not much there. I wonder if it might be better to re-integrate these pages and call them "Ross Sea". That would have three rings of POIs: McMurdo (still reached by redirect), the island and adjacent ice shelf, and the further coast and interior. IMO it was sensible to re-integrate South Pole Traverse, though that content might expand with the shortcuts used by ski tours. Grahamsands (talk) 09:43, 23 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I now propose to make that change not before Th 5 Jan 2023, to give folk time to weigh in over the holiday season. "McMurdo" was always a misnomer for this page, which has expanded far, far beyond. There is relevant discussion on the Antarctica page, but I recommend debating it here, as I've made a separate proposal there about the term "region" and it will help to keep the two threads separate. Grahamsands (talk) 15:39, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done. However I cannot rename the page, as "Ross Sea" is already used as a redirect - how to fix? There will be inconsistencies until that's sorted. Grahamsands (talk) 16:39, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think we should let this continue for two weeks more. The proposal was done just before Christmas, which ends the 13th over here (although people will have returned to work after this weekend). –LPfi (talk) 16:17, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I will be away the 20th, but I can complete the merger/move next week. Would it perhaps make sense to instead move the content from here to Ross Sea and making this page a redirect instead of moving it there? Much content is from there anyway, and moving content is a cleaner solution than deleting an article the content of which is to be retained. –LPfi (talk) 09:17, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
The Transantarctic Mountains weren't included, as they are far from the base, but if the article will be about the Ross Sea, The Ross Island and the Ross Ice Shelf, then the mountains are close. Antarctica says that "cruises to the Ross Sea sometimes follow the coast as far as Commonwealth Bay", which means we might include that strip also, perhaps all of the pie-segment. The mountains could be their own article if we had enough to tell about them, but I don't think we have, yet. –LPfi (talk) 09:30, 17 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I too would think a cut-and-paste move would work best. For one, this page was created with content from Ross Sea and moving it would just make the edit histories more confusing. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 23:56, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Done. Content moved to Ross Sea. I think there has been enough time to comment, and interest seems to have been low, as in some other similar discussions. I assume some further edits are needed to clarify scope etc. (Ross Ice Shelf should be mentioned, "Further out" is a confusing section name, ...). Further discussion is probably best had at Talk:Ross Sea#Merger 2023 and in new sections on that talk page, including on whether the Transantarctic Mountains and the coast further away should be included. –LPfi (talk) 08:52, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Return to "McMurdo Station" page.
