Disambig or extra region?

edit

User:Texugo just removed a tag, with the edit comment "disambig pages should not have IsPartOf because it categorizes them as destination pages". That is correct as far as it goes, but I do not think it goes far enough.

I think "Negros" should not have a disambig page since it is not ambiguous; it is the name of an island. The article should be tagged with Template:Extraregion and the IsPartOf template re-inserted. Other opinions? Pashley (talk) 14:29, 14 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'd be OK with that solution too (provided it isn't given a bunch of pointless and unnecessary empty understad/see/do/eat/sleep sections). On the other hand, it could still be viewed as a traditional disambig page, in that it disambiguates two provinces called Negros. Texugo (talk) 14:33, 14 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

one region?

edit

I have seen news stories about a proposal to make Negros Island one region in the Philippine administrative system. I am not sure what that means and did not look at the stories in detail. I gather the two provincial governors differ on the issue, Occidental for & Oriental against.

This has not passed yet. If it does, will that have any effect we need to worry about? 120.32.99.2 09:04, 19 February 2015 (UTC) (Pashley, but not logged in)Reply

The quality of the articles in question vary a lot, but fundamentally I don't see a reason to merge from a content point of view. Even if the regions merged administratively it wouldn't actually mean that we would have to change the article structure in anyway?
We had a similar quick discussion around Scotland before that decision was made, but that proposal was clear in the implications whereas this one is not... Andrewssi2 (talk) 10:53, 19 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
I do not think it will make a difference to us, but it seemed worth noting. See w:Regions of the Philippines for background if needed. Pashley (talk) 13:59, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
According to w:Negros (Philippines), this change has now been made. I'll alter a bit of text here. Pashley (talk) 12:41, 23 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Pashley: I've recieved news that the Negros Island Region (my home region) is recently dissolved by my nation's president. Pashley, I beg of you, please. Do NOT revert Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental to their former regions. I want both Negros provinces to be under one region here in Wikivoyage. I've been attempting to promote both provinces under one categorization, and now it feels like such chances are crushed! - Aki (talk) 21:25 (UTC), August 09 of 2017.

The question is not what you or I want, or what the Philippine government is doing, but what division makes sense for travellers. See ttcf. For example, WV treats the country as having four main regions (Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao & Palawan) even though the gov't uses only three; it seemed to us (after discussion at Talk:Philippines#Palawan) that made more sense to travellers.
If it made sense for travellers, we could also do things like including say Camiguin or Romblon in the Visayas, or covering Boracay under Luzon since it is often reached from Manila, or creating Wikivoyage:Extraregion articles for, say, "Islamic Philippines" or "Badjao areas". Those have never been suggested & I do not think any of them are a good idea. My point is just that we do not have to follow either the official divisions or the geographical divisions strictly; of course we should take account of both, but we can do whatever is best for travellers.
In this case, there are arguments both ways. The two provinces share an island, so perhaps they should be treated together, but in terms of language and transport links they are tied to the Central & Western Visayas (e.g. Dumaguete mostly speaks Cebuano & has ferries to Cebu, Bohol & Siquijor), so perhaps they should be included there. I do not have strong feelings either way.
Let's not change anything for now, see if others can offer opinions. Pashley (talk) 16:38, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Note that even if we moved the province articles back to Central & Western Visayas, we would still keep a Negros article; it would just become a Wikivoyage:Extraregion, as it was before we changed the hierarchy (see Talk:Visayas#Negros_Region.3F) a few months back. Pashley (talk) 16:53, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

After discussion at Talk:Visayas#Radical_change_proposal a number of changes were made, including keeping Negros as an in-hierarchy region. Pashley (talk) 18:34, 27 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Need a warning?

edit

5 countries issue travel warnings for parts of Negros. Do we need a warning here? Pashley (talk) 12:31, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Violence?

edit

Bloody Violence Haunts Philippine Sugar Plantations in Negros seems to be saying the victims are mostly sugar cane workers. Other reports I have seen indicated the Communist guerilla force the New People's Army were involved & central gov't troops chasing them. I checked the US & Canadian advisories; both advise caution anywhere in the country & have specific warnings about Mindanao, but neither mentions Negros.

Is this something we need a warning or caution box about? Pashley (talk) 18:24, 27 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

The section just above is two years old & about a different threat, but might also be relevant Pashley (talk) 18:28, 27 July 2019 (UTC).Reply
Yeah, there have been a slew of murders in Negros Oriental, with the suspects remaining unknown, but they don't seem to be a major threat to travelers (most victims are government officials, cops, and sugarcane farmers), however the suspected perpetrators have even targeted unwary civilians. A declaration of martial law in response to those murders, however, might raise an alarm. --TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 17:48, 3 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Pashley: Following up, there are already plans to declare martial law in response to those string of murders, where communist rebels are being implicated, but we might not know yet whether travel advisories will be extended to the whole island. -TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 17:28, 4 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
