Talk:Nils Holgersson's Journey Across Sweden

Title

The title of this article is not obvious. While Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey across Sweden is a direct translation of the Swedish title, it is too long (and proper capitalization would be Nils Holgersson's wonderful Journey Across Sweden). The official title The Wonderful Adventures of Nils needs to omit The, and also does not mention the country. What would be a better title? /Yvwv (talk) 01:09, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

We have had a policy against articles about individual people; however, some travel topics have a name in them (Astrid Lindgren tourism, Voyages of Columbus), etc. There is however an article about Robin Hood; it seems that names of fictional people are OK. Still, I would prefer a title that mentions Sweden. /Yvwv (talk) 01:32, 7 September 2017 (UTC)

I thought about this (briefly) before naming the article. I figured that "Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey across Sweden" is a more proper name for an itinerary, even though it is not the commonly used English title of the book. (Just like "Millenium-tour" would be a better itinerary name that "Millenium Series", and "On the trail of Marco Polo" is better than "Book of the Marvels of the World"). It also, as you said, gives a hint about where the itinerary is. I do however agree that it needs correct capitalizetion. Is the long title a big problem if there are handy redirects? List or paragraphs?

I am wondering whether the "Nils' journey" section is best described in a list or in running paragraphs? Consider these three alternatives:

Alternative 1: (One list item per major stop)

• 1 Västra Vemmenhög, Skurup, Scania – Nils Holgersson's home village.
• 2 Vittskövle Castle, Kristianstad – Nils gets an involuntary guided tour of the castle.
• 3 Glimmingehus, Simrishamn – Nils visits the castle of Glimmingehus, which according to the book is the last holdout of the "black rats". These have been marginalized and are under occupation from the invasive "grey rats". Nils and Akka intervenes to save the black rats in a manner much like the "Rat-Catcher of Hamelin".
• 4 Kullaberg – A natural reserve in western Scania, where Nils witnesses the spring dances of various animals, the most notable being "the dance of the cranes".
• 5 Karlskrona – A large harbour in Blekinge where Nils meets (a statue of) the founder of Karlskrona King Carl XI of Sweden, and the poor box "Old Man Rosenbom".

Alternative 2: (Running paragraphs with several in-paragraph markers)

Nils starts his journey at his home village of 6 Västra Vemmenhög, Skurup, Scania. He thereafter continues to 7 Vittskövle Castle, Kristianstad, where he gets an involuntary guided tour, and 8 Glimmingehus Castle, Simrishamn which according to the book is the last holdout of the "black rats". These have been marginalized and are under occupation from the invasive "grey rats". Nils and Akka intervenes to save the black rats in a manner much like the "Rat-Catcher of Hamelin".

Before he exits Scania he visits the natural reserve 9 Kullaberg where he witnesses the spring dances of various animals, the most notable being "the dance of the cranes". In 10 Karlskrona, a large harbour in Blekinge, Nils meets (a statue of) the founder of Karlskrona King Carl XI of Sweden, and the poor box "Old Man Rosenbom"...

Alternative 3: (Province based marker-lists)

• 11 Scania – Nils starts his journey at his home village of Västra Vemmenhög. He thereafter continues to Vittskövle Castle, where he gets an involuntary guided tour, and Glimmingehus Castle which according to the book is the last holdout of the "black rats". These have been marginalized and are under occupation from the invasive "grey rats". Nils and Akka intervenes to save the black rats in a manner much like the "Rat-Catcher of Hamelin". Before he exits Scania he visits the natural reserve Kullaberg where he witnesses the spring dances of various animals, the most notable being "the dance of the cranes".
• 12 Blekinge – In Karlskrona Nils meets (a statue of) the founder of Karlskrona King Carl XI of Sweden, and the poor box "Old Man Rosenbom"...
