Talk:Plains (India)
Adding images, content
editOn images: This page has a nice pagebanner, but the body of the page is completely lacking in images, and that's bad. The most obvious things to look for would be images of the Golden Temple and the view of or from the Ganges in Varanasi, but maybe those are too obvious? What do you think? Or if you like, don't discuss, just add images that seem appropriate to you.
The second, even more important problem is that there is a pathetic lack of content in general on this page. The Plains are the breadbasket of India. Have we felt too overwhelmed by the population, the number of attractions, etc., to try to tackle this? I will try to start with something, at least, as I find the bare sections on this page embarrassing. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:43, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
Number of Cities
editDear Ikan_Kekek the different zones of India contains "nine of the most notable cities" is it necessary to keep exactly nine cities. I have added a 10th city in this section, if you approve I can add a few more. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 17:31, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, it's consensus to have no more than nine cities in such lists, per WV:Avoid long lists. You have to make your point to substitute Allahabad for one of the nine, right here in this talk page. Ibaman (talk) 17:44, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks Ibman I will do the necessary changes. Also there are two categories Cities and Other Destinations, can I add more categories like Heritage, Pilgrimage and Wild Life. --Rangan Datta Wiki (talk) 17:53, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
- I would say yes, you can. I don't think you're asking about the definition of "Other destinations", but those are other than cities (so national parks or wildlife preserves, islands, mountains and so on). Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:28, 14 August 2017 (UTC)
Banner change
editThe old banner was recently replaced by the new one with the edit summary "...previous banner had poor quality".
As the "cropper" of the old banner I might be biased on this but I think the new banner, just foggy all the way to its two thirds, isn't really an improvement. Or was the intention to capture the smoke from the funeral pyres?
Besides, although the both banners were cropped from pictures taken in the same city, the old one is meant to represent the Ganges, which is the common and defining feature of the Indian Plains, and hence could be taken anywhere in the region, while the new one focuses on simply one of the many major cities of the region. - In my opinion, the fog in the new picture is a feature, not a disturbance. However, I would be happy to find a third picture to illustrate the region even better. /Yvwv (talk) 00:11, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- I've never been to the region, but of the two banners, I think the new one is a nicer picture. —Granger (talk · contribs) 03:14, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- Added two new optional banners. Any remaining banners can be used for other pages. Both Doab and South Asia could use a change. /Yvwv (talk) 03:25, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- Option 4 is my favorite, followed by option 2 and then option 1. In addition to the colors and interesting scene, option 4 fits very nicely with the title and contents. I don't like option 3 very much—it seems mundane and doesn't make the destination look appealing to me. —Granger (talk · contribs) 03:53, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- To me, 4 is the clear winner. Can we change to it? Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:16, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- I haven't changed my mind. Any reason not to change to Banner 4? Speak up, or I'll make the change as soon as a couple of days from now. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:30, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

I don't really see the need for a disambiguation here to be fair. Sure, there are towns called "Plains", but it is the same reason why we don't disambiguate the Alps. It might also help distinguish our site from The Other Site. What does everyone else think? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 11:21, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. Maybe you've never heard of the Great Plains in the U.S., but those are the first plains most Americans would think of, and I'm positive there are a lot of other plains people in other countries would be first to think of. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:15, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- I have heard of the Great Plains, but my point is that we don't disambiguate pages when there's no need for it. Likewise, do you really think many non-New Yorkers will think of the NY Capital District, when they hear "Capital District"? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 02:37, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
- No. And I therefore don't know if that name by itself is optimal, either. I'll say also that my first association with "Plains" without a "the" before it is Plains, Georgia, the home town of former U.S. President Carter. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:58, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Color coding
editThe map is color coded differently from the "Regions" section, so that's very confusing. I think the simplest fix is to change the color-coding of the "Regions" section list. Ikan Kekek (talk) 20:27, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
