12h or 24h time formats?

edit

Is it correct that: "(In Korea)The 24-hour notation is more commonly used in text and is written "14:05" or "14시 5분". Examples include railway timetables, plane departure and landing timings, and TV schedules. In movie theaters it is also not uncommon to see something like 25:30 for the 01:30 AM movie." ?

I also read that "AM and PM designators are placed before the time, e.g. 오전 9:59 and 오후" in 12h time format.

For any Korean article to reach Star status, it must currently have internally consistent time formatting, so was there a good reason to change from 24h time format to a mixture? --118.93nzp (talk) 21:23, 28 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

12h or 24h time format background

edit

It's probably not so relevant to the discussion about time formats for this page, but while I was researching this topic I came across this little polemic:

Copyright violation from [1] redacted. -- LtPowers (talk) 20:27, 9 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

http://my.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1ktabp/1224_hour_time_format_used_around_the_world/ has this comment: "... in south Korea. It's definitely mixed and favors 24hr, not 12 as the map suggests." --118.93nzp (talk) 21:54, 28 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

This discussion is probably best had the country level (South Korea), however I really don't think that times standards have to be localized in any article. (Actually I don't believe English writing standards should be localized either, however that consensus has been already reached). I believe the consensus is for 24h format time, which aligns well with my personal experience in South Korea. 12h time seems to be used by English people a lot, and that certainly gets reflected by casual contributors from that country. I think I agree with most of what you write, Andrew, but would formally take the opportunity to record that our current policy is to "Choose between formats by following predominant local usage. Ask yourself which format visitors will see in timetables, on shop doors and in newspapers.". My own personal preference would be to slightly sharpen up on that advice to try and obviate any unproductive edits and (since speech and shop doors are so variable and difficult to document) change it to: Choose to deviate from standard, 24 hour format only to follow overwhelming local written usage. Ask yourself: "which format will visitors see in newspapers, on shop doors, and on train schedules in timetables?" If the answer is "a mixture", then use our standard 24 hour format. --118.93nzp (talk) 01:52, 29 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would agree with that. Andrewssi2 (talk) 02:17, 29 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've slightly shortened my proposal; hopefully without sacrificing your general assent... --118.93nzp (talk) 06:53, 29 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think this is really not a hard case. If 24-hour time is dominant in South Korea, that's the format that should be used in articles about South Korea. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:39, 29 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's not so clear cut. Dominance varies according to both geography and the generations within Korea - hence my proposal above to make decisions a little bit easier to make for a country as a whole - otherwise with the current criteria we might end up with different time formats for different parts of the same country (or even city) which is less than optimal I would have thought. --118.93nzp (talk) 10:49, 29 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Guide

edit

Andrew, a while ago you've promoted Suwon right from Outline to Guide, but I think you intended to promote it to Usable, right? Given that Suwon isn't exactly a small village the article is still quite short for being a Guide (and a bit messy too).ϒpsilon (talk) 20:03, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

I can't remember precisely why I marked it as Guide, although in terms of completeness it seems to meet Guide : Wikivoyage:Guide_articles . The manual of style still needs a lot of work, so marking it as 'Usable' would be appropriate. Specifically 'Understand' needs work. --Andrewssi2 (talk) 20:43, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yup. Myself I think of Guide articles as articles that can be featured as DotM/OtBP/FTT and Suwon isn't quite there yet. ϒpsilon (talk) 20:52, 18 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

2nd and 3rd industry?

edit

What in the world are those, and why would a traveler be interested? See this edit, and pinging User:June Hee Lee for input, keeping in mind that this is a travel guide and not an encyclopedia (that would be Wikipedia). I see similar issues with the "Geography" section. I hope none of this was copied from Wikipedia. If it was, immediately delete it and read Wikivoyage:Copyleft. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:21, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

w:Three-sector model. In Geography class at school you often learn about economies in different countries, but that kind of information is hardly useful in a travel guide. Ypsilon (talk) 18:46, 10 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

on Eating part, I think if you put the address also in English for each restaurant, It would be kind.

Why are there so many cultural, historical, and convenient facilities in Suwon?

edit

According to this article, there are a wide variety of cultural facilities and cultural assets in Suwon. In parts of the city around Suwon, Suwon is particularly centered. Why are the peripherals more developed? --Kim Ji Min2 (talk) 06:31, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Need subway explanation

edit

You may have to explain more about the subway line. The subway is the most useful transportation in Suwon. Travelers will definitely go with Seoul when they travel to Suwon. Maybe a trip to Seoul is the main purpose. Therefore, please explain not only the traffic such as KTX but also the subway that can go to other adjacent areas such as Seoul and Incheon.

Article Status

edit

I think that this page's status is a Star. Because there is enough information about Suwon-where can I go or sleep and also what can I do or eat-. But I want to add maps about drinking places. Then this page will be more completely.--Seonghan Lee (talk) 06:49, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I second what Ground Zero wrote above. It's definitely not a Star, but very few pages are. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:25, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

A little more complement would make it the perfect city guide.

edit

Information related to cultural life, such as restaurants and department stores, is very detailed. However, I would like to improve the readability of the parts related to the drinks a little bit more, and make up the list. In addition, if a specific bus number or line is displayed within the get around list, it is likely that information about suwon will be displayed more clearly.--Mming na (talk) 06:49, 15 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

This map of districts might not be that important, but since the issue is a dubious claim of authorship with some suspicion of copyvio, we might not want to host this here if it's deleted. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:06, 9 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
