Hello, DeFacto! Welcome to Wikivoyage.

To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. If you are familiar with Wikipedia, take a look over some of the differences here. Official names of Ireland, etc.

edit

Hi, DeFacto, and thanks for the corrections, although I did revert this one because I think Britain and not the UK as a whole is being referenced. I may have been too hasty in some cases, because looking more closely, I think the entire UK was meant some of the time, but definitely not here:

  • The pastie peculiar to Northern Ireland should not be confused with the type of pasty associated with Cornwall and common throughout Britain.

So feel free to restore most of your edits, but check each instance individually. Also, I don't know how much this is relevant, but I'll throw it out, anyway: the guiding principle of this site is the traveller comes first, so unlike Wikipedia, we don't always go by official names.

All the best,

Hi Ikan, I know the terminology used when referring to the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and the British Isles is confusing, and these articles were jumbling it all up. both "Britain" and "Ireland" are very ambiguous words, and there are other less ambiguous words which should probably be used, depending on context.
  • If we are discussing sovereign country that comprises England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales we should use "the "United Kingdom" or "the UK".
  • The largest of the British Isles (the one containing England, Scotland and Wales) is called "Great Britain".
  • When discussing the sovereign state called "Ireland" we need to be carefull not to confuse it with the island of Ireland which also contains "Northern Ireland", a constituent part of the UK.
I tried to move Cuisine of Britain and Ireland to Cuisine of the United Kingdom and Ireland, but it failed, so I created a redirect instead. I was only passing, and got sucked in, but will leave it to you now, if you want to try and unjumble the mess you restored. DeFacto (talk) 20:50, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'd recommend for you to instead engage in a discussion, which is the way things like the names of highly visible articles get changed on wikis. I suspect we'll probably make the changes, but we need to agree on them, first. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:41, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Clearing the air

edit

Hi, DeFacto. I always respected you on Commons, assuming you're the same person. I'm sorry I misjudged your initial approach here and mistook what was going on in the changes on that article when I thought you were engaging in bad faith and it wasn't your edit. I hope we're cool and will be fine from here on.

All the best,

Fair play Ikan Kekek. For my part, I see that I might have been a bit clumsy in the way I barged straight in to make certain changes that I saw as necessary "improvements", without testing the water first. We live and learn! Cheers, DeFacto (talk) 09:18, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Right back at you. Enjoy your Monday. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:20, 19 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
